well, that God "had hated" Esau, just like It says. Now imo "hated" is a bad translation there, we are called to "hate your family" too, but a better understanding of what is really meant by "hated" is gained by the study along the way, i guess; it is usually understood that a comparison is being made, and we aren't supposed to be "hating" anyone per se. "God (Love) had hated Esau is a comparison statement iow, not a value statement; it goes with Jacob have I loved.
Esau (Edom) is a type for Adam, which also figures in i guess. Plus we can also see revealed that Edom is the one who inherited, the land at least, and Jacob is the one who left, returning later to supplicate Edom, not the other way around as might be expected, right, if Jacob inherited? Iow, briefly, Esau sells his birthright to Jacob, Israel dies and Jacob leaves, even though the inheritor is the one who is supposed to stay, and then Jacob returns to Esau, not the other way round. (Jacob = Heel Grabber, Supplanter). And there is no resolution here bc we are not done yet, or God is not or whatever, but another point is that the story is not resolved until later
Aren't Jacob and Esau brothers? But Jacob (Heel Grabber, Supplanter, even Deceiver) have I loved, while Esau (Edom, Adam) have I hated.
so then, a puzzle
