So I saw a thread on Christian Forums about this today and looked up what it was.

When I was around 4 years old I had an experience like this where it felt like I was pulled out of my body and was looking down at myself. Is this astral projection?

It is one of those things that sometimes has me doubt what memories are true and what not. I do not think about things anymore, because I have forgiven and moved on, but I think it did sort of trigger this for me. It is something I have often thought about over the years, bit always thought it is what you call dissociation. Is that the same thing as astral projection?

Some use this thinking it brings them closer to God, but reading about it, sounds demonic. In my instance, I am unsure what that was.

Since I had no idea where this fit, it is here.

I spoke about this on the other thread. There is a real ability from God, and there is a demonic ability because Satan has counterfeited the real. You might want to go back and read what I wrote. A woman from Sweden disagrees with me, claiming to have discernment of spirits, but she has a background in New Age so I put it down to fear of what looks the same, and totally discounting the fact that counterfeits are based on something real.

Seeing as I don't have this ability, I am no authority on it. But the Bible does show instances.

I would not call it "astral projection" because that is the occult term. Christians today call it "traveling in the spirit" or "spirit travel."

When I lived in California I worked with two different women who could astral project themselves anywhere they wanted to go. One of them was a real witch - doing spells and the whole thing. She had more than two familiar spirits as well. So it is a real ability that Satan can use, and I used to believe only Satan used it, as do many Christians. Our government even trained people to do this for spying on the enemy, calling it "remote viewing." In those cases, the spirit was invisible. But, I do know the other woman I knew was able to be seen on the other end by a relative she would go visit, but more like a ghost. Christians on the other hand, seem to be able to physically be moved, like being in two places at the same time. Very confusing to me. Look up on youtube "Sid Roth Joshua Mills China."

Why it happened to you when you were young is a mystery to me. It causes me to think it may somehow be a natural ability due to extreme relaxation, like a near death experience. I do know that both astral projection and spirit travel can be learned, but one is used by Satan, the other by God. Although if it is "natural" it doesn't have to be one or the other, but neither, just you. Maybe someone else knows. I just wouldn't put it all to Satan as some Christians will do who see demons under every rock. I believe in demons and Satan, but he just isn't everywhere.

Yeh I think dissociation and astral projection are similar. Mine would be called dissociation...I think astral projection is being willing while dissociation is unwilling. If astral is associated with witch craft, I think a person best not dabble in it...but on a spiritual level I was just wondering about dissociation. Because it almost felt like I was being held.

imo dreaming is not much different. When we are little kids we are not nearly as married to our perception of "self" as when we get older. In fact there was a day when you came to self awareness, at about the age of 2 or a little earlier, and you can even recall this if you regress, just maybe suggest it to yourself before you go to sleep or whatever, takes a while, a couple weeks maybe. It often seems to accompany looking in a mirror

Personally, I don't think they are similar at all. Dissociation is a detachment from reality, whereas astral projection and spirit traveling are real, not from a deranged or injured mind.

Imo dissociation is real as well, and occurs to protect a soul from trauma. A fragment is left behind so the body doesn't die and this can lead to multiple personalities if the fragment is not rejoined.

From her account from childhood, I can't see what she experienced as dissociation.

Pretending and imagination is not what we are talking about here.
ha well again i get you, but these terms are kind of associated too, dissociation involves a sort of pretending and some obvious imagination too, doesn't it? i think the op got it @ "intentional or unintentional" i think the terms were?

"reality" is much more fluid for a child also, so i'm not sure how much of our convo even applies here. i remember floating up to the ceiling and watching myself as a little kid too, never badly traumatized or anything. well, not physically. but it was unintentional, it just kind of happened all by itself. but as i now recall, i was in my room staring at the ceiling bc i was being punished, i guess

If you really need to understand what happened to you, ask God to show you. Maybe you already have. I pray that God will give you understanding.

I agree with 1stCenturyLady that this type of experience can be from God or the devil, so we need to discern the spirits. The devil is a copycat; he tries to copy and twist what God has said or done. We need to be careful not to get sucked into the devil's schemes, but we also shouldn't automatically label all supernatural phenomena as being demonic.

I've heard Christians give testimonies that they were taken by God to the third heaven like Paul was. I'm sure there are Christians who discount this, but, hey, if God wants to transport me there, I won't resist Him! However, I won't try to make this happen through meditation or other practices like the mystics do. I strongly believe that their experiences are NOT from God and, therefore, are dangerous.

I would also be careful not to assume that this is merely a psychological phenomenon. Plenty of psychologists and doctors have done this with "near-death" experiences, trying to explain away the supernatural nature of these events. I'm fully convinced that some people have temporarily left their bodies, have experienced the reality of either heaven or hell, and then have come back to tell about it.

Was it a reality that you were on the ceiling, or just imagination? That is the difference.

i would reread that passage again wadr, Paul never got taken anywhere, and he is very open about saying so

ok let's talk about this after we get the Paul story straight imo
No one has ever gone up to heaven except He Who came down from it, the Son of Man

I'm glad you let God be God, but not sure by your clarification. Are you calling Christians who are caught up to heaven, whether in vision or spirit traveling, not of God? Or just occult astral projection?

No one has ever gone up to heaven except He Who came down from it, the Son of Man; and i'm certain that Paul was not making this Scripture into a lie, which the passage will even verify if one reads it right imo. There is not even a point to the passage if the "caught up" part is carried to its (non)conclusion, is there? He is making a diff point entirely imo, that of the value of speaking in the 3rd person, i think

boy, good Q, and i really can't say, except that it was not something that i was doing intentionally like a tea party or anything, and sometimes i knew stuff that had happened while i was in my room that i shouldn't have known, saw mom making a cup of tea or whatever, i went other places than just my room ceiling iow. i could maybe ask mom if she remembers. didn't register at the time, but looking back on it it freaked all the adults out i guess

I was sexually abused by my dad from about 4 to 6 years old and this happened during one of those times. I did have a couple "characters" for awhile that I saw. But they are gone now. They were just parts of me I had to recognize and work through. There is a lot about my past you don't know like my dad being locked up in the bedroom with the windows boarded up/deadbolt and chain. And I was in there once or twice with him. Being a witness daily to my dad swearing on the Bible to my mom he didnt look at another woman or my sister that day. Only I was okay. It is sad looking back, I have overcome these things by the grace of God. He has brought me through so much. I think astral projection last night got me thinking down the wrong road again though. I am better again today. Just a trigger. But I was just a bit anxious last night, so prayed some and worried some. Work in progress!!!!

So yes. I was told by a counselor it was dissociation and I have struggled with PTSD before. But God is faithful and it is only by Him I am alive today.

As far as if dissociation is astral projection, I think it could be when I think about it, because in trauma you can desire to be out of your body. I don't think any of it is good though...and it really had me doubting some things for a long time. It was difficult to accept, because I blocked it out until I was about 15.
