What makes something "apostolic?"

Catholics believe their church is such based on a bizarre reference to "succession." (As if there was a family kingship being passed down)

Others believe it means the "headship of Christ"....whatever that means in practical terms.

But mostly people are unconcerned about how apostolic their doctrine and practice is....as long as it is somewhat biblical

What say you?

Do you espouse apostolic doctrine? Engage in apostolic fellowship?

Acts 2:42 (KJV)
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Usually when I hear this the most is when talking about the oneness Pentecostal churches.

I always assumed it meant folks practice the version of Christianity, up to a point, that existed during the times of the Apostles.

How is this distinguished from what is practiced today? Or do you see that practice as identical?

There are no apostles since John died. The "gifts" they distributed through their hands ceased with them.

But to follow their doctrine.......do you think it is possible? Isn't "biblical" doctrine actually apostolic?

Up to a point. The charismatic gifts today are enactments nothing like the originals.

What about this...

2 Thes. 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

Don't all believers do this?

Not at all. Look at how Paul says to conduct a meeting of the church in 1 Cor. 14. Who does this? People hardly believe in prophets or prophesy anymore.

So then you have abandoned the biblical tradition for what other tradition? (Since most people neither believe in apostles nor follow apostolic tradition.)

When's the last time you went out raising people from the dead? Or restoring twisted limbs?

I think they believe that there most important part that make them Apostolic is the Holy Ghost Baptism speaking in another tongues belief.
I have never heard that they have Apostles among them.
But sure they think they are preaching the true salvation plan that the Apostles preached about the HG.

Scripture.

Can you see that you are evading the question? As in....we can no longer obey the bible so we're going to follow the bible instead.

Or is this obfuscation of the truth intentional?

2 Thess. 3:6 Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from any brother who leads an undisciplined life that is not in keeping with the tradition you received from us.

What tradition? Apostolic tradition?

If the power of the apostles is no longer there....can we ignore everything else they say?

You might not obey the bible and prefer "voices in your head". But for the Church, the bible does all it claims to do.

Raising the dead?

Dave you always speak hypocritically....without using basic logic in your double talking. How can you claim to obey the bible when you claim also that the bible cannot be followed?
Try to avoid being religious and dogmatic in your response.

The Apostles raised the dead did they not?
