I've noticed there are a few atheists who visit CyB forum.

I'd like to pose a question to them and to those who have had conversations with atheists:

What are the reasons why atheists reject the evidence for God's existence?

I think, at least partially, it can be the question of "why does God allow horrible things to happen to people if He is Love. Some think they have to "clean up their act" first...(when IMHO, it is usually the opposite)
Some are angry, some are just plain blind to His truth. And the last, I believe is who Jesus was referring to in Luke 16:31
"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead."
Just my nickle :)

They say there is no evidence.

They say that many religions all claim something different, so why should they believe one over the other?

They say Christians all disagree about the facts, so without a consensus there is nothing to believe.

Nancy,

Those are some of the objections that people may give to Christianity.

My question is more specific: What are the reasons why atheists reject the evidence for God's existence?

Scott,

What would you say to the assertion: 'There is no evidence'.

How would you respond to: I reject God because of all the religions with conflicting claims?

Would they apply the same standard, 'Without a consensus there is nothing to believe,' to buying a motor vehicle?

There is no consensus when buying an SUV. I drive a Mitsubishi ASX, but I could have chosen from the General Motors SUV range, Ford range, Mazda range, Honda range, Hyundai range, Kia range, Subaru, Citroen, Nissan or Jeep range.

There's no consensus when choosing a SUV. That didn't stop my purchase of a Mitsubishi. I did my research to decide what was the best for my needs.

Surely a reasonable person would be able to compare the evidence to arrive at a conclusion?

Sorry bout that
I am going to say that they are not seeking Him with an open and sincere heart, just trying to prove any evidence wrong. It's out there for those who truly want to know and, seeing that as being a lot of research form many sources. Maybe they fear they will be proven wrong (which eventually, they will be) maybe @Vince could answer much better than I?? :)

Windmill,

That seems a reasonable reason for rejecting the need to submit to God and be a servant of God.

What about the implication of eternal punishment vs eternal life?

Oz

When they refuse to concider the evidence it is not reasonable.

As for heaven or hell.
If one wants heaven then one must follow the conditions that gets one heaven.

I disagree. I searched for 18 years and came to the conclusion that there is not good evidence that god exists. Many times I begged god for knowledge but he never revealed himself. I wish god does exist. If there is sufficient evidence to believe I will. Many will lie about me and claim that I was never sincere or that I just want to live in my sin or some hogwash like that. When they say things like that it only proves to me how morally bankrupt they have become due to their religion because they are saying things about me that I know are not true and they refuse to acknowledge the possibility that I am telling the truth. I am not trying to prove evidence wrong, I am looking for evidence with reasonable skepticism.

This is what I was talking about in my post to Nancy. I do consider all evidence presented here. You just want to equate me not accepting the evidence as sufficient as I am not considering it. This is untrue and a lie.

 1. I would say that all of creation and history are evidence.
 2. There is only one so-called religion that begins at the beginning and continues a common testimony from thousands of individuals who lived at different times not knowing each other but giving a similar witness, all through history.
 3. Actually...I don't find atheists to be "reasonable." I find them to be demanding and having an unwarranted sense of entitlement.

A generalised answer will always upset anyone who takes it as an answer addressed to them.

You say there is no evidence for God, so you have the scientific evidence that explains what caused the universe to begin, you can explain why the universe is understandable, rational etc.

Because they are part of the evidence for God.
The other clasic explanation is Jesus's resurrection.

You say there is no evidence for God,
No i don't say this. I am saying that the the evidence is not sufficient for belief.

so you have the scientific evidence that explains what caused the universe to begin, you can explain why the universe is understandable, rational etc.
I don't need to. Just because I don't know how the universe began or why it is understandable is not evidence for a god. It simply means I don't know.

Because they are part of the evidence for God.
Then that evidence is insufficient as I said above.
The other clasic explanation is Jesus's resurrection.
The evidence that he was resurrected is insufficient as well.

Vince,

What evidence will you accept and reject? That will help me to understand what kind of evidence you require to admit there is a God or not.

Thanks,
Oz

I don't know. But I bet god knows what evidence I would need.

"Surely a reasonable person would be able to compare the evidence to arrive at a conclusion?"
I suppose it would depend on how much you want the truth and how many false "religions" you are willing to research in order to find it, or at least rule some out, lol.
