Survey: Majority of American Christians Don’t Believe the Gospel

The gospel according to Paul is simultaneously an affirmation of who Jesus is (Rom. 1:3-4) as well as of what he has done (1 Cor. 15). In Romans 1, Paul says he was “set apart for the gospel of God which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord . . .” Then, in 1 Corinthians 15, Paul adds:

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.

Simon Gathercole summarizes the Pauline definition of the gospel as: God’s account of his saving activity in Jesus the Messiah, in which, by Jesus’s death and resurrection, he atones for sin and brings new creation. Our faith in Jesus, not our works, makes us right with God (Rom. 3:28).

There is, of course, more to the gospel than the good news about our salvation being purchased by Jesus and through faith in him sinful men and women are reconciled to a holy God. But if you do not believe that aspect of the gospel you do not believe the gospel. And if you don’t believe the gospel you should stop calling yourself a Christian.

This survey shows that too many Christians aren’t Christians at all. They are not relying on the finished work in Christ but trusting that their own works will be judged worthy by God. There are many reasons why this belief is prevalent among self-identified Christians, but a primary cause is that they likely haven’t heard the gospel.

This may seem like an absurd claim since Christian leaders in America appear to be constantly talking about the gospel. But this is partially due to self-selection bias: if you’re the type of person who would visit the website of The Gospel Coalition to read an article about how American Christians don’t believe the gospel, you probably assume most Christians are also familiar with the gospel. Even in gospel-centered churches, though, we can’t take for granted that the good news has been fully heard. As my friend and pastor Eric Saunders says, when you get tired of talking about a subject is usually when your audience is just starting to pay attention to your message.

This survey should be a reminder how easy it is for people to slip back in to relying on themselves, and how we need to constantly proclaim the gospel—to ourselves and our neighbors—until we fully realize that we can only be rescued from our sin through what Jesus accomplished by his life, death, and resurrection.

hope this helps !!!

I think the number of those who do not believe in and actually live the Gospel is much higher--well above 50% of so-called Christians! There are over 2 billion nominal Christians in the world. Do we really think that 50% of all those Christians really follow the Gospel, or even fully understand it? Certainly not!

The Gospel, for me, is that we can exchange our carnal life for Christ's spiritual life simply by accepting it as the reward for acknowledging his atonement for our sins. When we accept that he arose from the dead we believe that we also will rise from the dead and have eternal life with him and with God the Father. Others will have eternal existence, but not eternal life in the spiritual sense.

More critical than accepting this doctrinally is accepting it by living it. Many genuine Christians backslide or compromise, and thus do not exemplify the true Gospel. An enormous number of nominal Christians are in cults, weak churches, or simply have not come to recognize a genuine spiritual relationship can exist between God and themselves when they begin to walk by his word.

Recognition of His spoken word is vital, and is something that happens in a secret place in our conscience. What awakens our conscience to God's word is often a process, which in part explains why many professing Christians do not yet walk fully in the Gospel and exemplify the Gospel. We need to give people time, which is exactly what God is doing in the present age.

Sound Doctrine has a direct impact on how a person lives their life. The same is true with unsound doctrine which has the opposite effect.

And if you don’t believe the gospel you should stop calling yourself a Christian.
There are a lot of posters here and on other Christian forums who have a very sketchy understanding of Gospel truth (which begins with the deity of Christ, and the substitutionary atonement accomplished at the cross, followed by the bodily resurrection of Christ).

But some deliberately pervert the Gospel. So it is not surprising that the survey showed such a dismal result. Many preachers are not preaching the full and true Gospel either. And many churches and pastors are focusing on entertainment and feel-good theology.

I hate to throw a monkey wrench in this thread, but I would have to say I am likely among the 50% who don't. The older I get, the more life is increasingly becoming about obedience to the Lord. It is tiring, but I do not have a choice in the matter as a slave of God. As Paul said, "Woe be unto me if I do not preach the gospel." That implies that he could have believed his head off, but if he had not been obedient to what the Lord called him to do, he would have been in trouble. To whom much is given, much is required, and apostles could not have just phoned it in and expected to squeak in anyway.

So I just have a hard time with anyone saying that I can "skate" and somehow still make it, because it's supposedly "not about works." But to each is own, and I hold no resentments. I have my own life to live, and that means no time for even debating this issue.

Hi @Hidden In Him,

It is true that the love of Christ compels us to preach the gospel who have been called to preach the gospel; and I think that this is what Paul meant by "Woe is me if I do not preach the gospel."

The very gospel that he preached was one of salvation by grace through faith.

There is a definition for grace that I think you might like...

G)oodness R)endered A)s C)hrist E)mpowers.

While fear is a good motivation for obeying the Lord, I do believe that love for the Lord is a better motivation.

Love in Christ,

@justbyfaith.

A lot to do with it is the fact that the church is not the place for preaching the gospel. It is for the body of Christ to come together for edification and building up.

Jesus said go into all the world and make disciples. He did not say go into all the churches and make disciples. Disciples are made in conversation and through the supernatural in the market place. One they have repented, been baptized, and received the Holy Ghost, then they are bought to fellowship with believers.

In one church I was the leader of we went to the local indoor pool to baptize converts. We did not have somewhere to baptize them when we met because we did not need to. The deed had already been done.

I have recently read in the region of 10 books about life in the New Testament Church and not one of them said anything about the new converts being baptized in the church meeting. Most baptisms were done in a river or one of the many pools that were part of the temple.

I know some of you will disagree with me but unless you have evidence to the contrary I am not interested.

Works are the result of salvation not a means as we read in Ephesians 2:8-10. The fruit of the spirit is the result. Galatians 5:22-26. When we are in the vine (Christ)good fruit is the result. the parable of the sower confirms this below.

Matthew 13:18-23
“Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

And your assumption is that those from *traditionalist* churches have a better grounding? Give me a break.

We do have a much better grounding all you guys have is a book and your opinion of what it says. We have the Church fathers, the Apostles, the Church history, proper Scripture all of which you evangelicals throw away. With nothing backing them and they can make any idea because of Sola Scriptura why wouldn't a majority of you evangelicals not believe the Gospel. Evangelicals have not roots

There are genuine Christians and there are "nominal" Christians. There are genuine believers and there are make believers. Sadly, many who "profess" to be Christians merely believe "mental assent" that the death, burial and resurrection of Christ "happened," yet they don't trust in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as the ALL-sufficient means of their salvation. Instead they trust in works (at least in part) as a supplemental means of their salvation.

Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me,

naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.'

Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?

When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?

When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'

And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,

a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'

Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?'

He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.'

And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
