The water may be the cleansing effect of the blood of Christ.. All who have been washed in Christ blood will be given a newbirth by the Spirit.

That's what 'work's are. Works are the outward expression of either your obedient faith in Christ, or your obedience to the flesh.

And that's where you go wrong. If Peter had done that he would not have accepted what happened to Cornelius and his household.
Measuring things by the Bible is fine, but if what you see doesn't line up with what you think the Bible says then you need to reevaluate what you think the Bible says.
You can tell me all day long I was born again before I got saved and it will not change the fact that I did not receive the Spirit and be changed until after I asked for and received God's mercy in salvation. Why would I ask for something I already have?

I categorically reject the Catholic church. They most assuredly do not represent any form of Apostolic succession. Thank God we have the recorded words of Jesus and the Apostles. God obviously preserved them for us because he knew man would corrupt the original message. I go by the original teachings.

I don't have any beef with that. All the Apostles comprise the foundation of the building of God.
Ephesians 2:19-22
fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
All believers are sitting on the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets. 'Taint no pope in that foundation.
Fathers have care of their children, spiritual fathers care for our souls!

And Jesus say to Peter, the apostles, and their successors: behold I am with you even until the end of the world!!!
So the apostles have to remain until the end! Revelation 5:10
And hast made us unto our God kings and Priests: and we shall reign on the earth. Reign with kingdom authority (keys) power (bind loose) matt 16:18

Though I did have a spiritual father/mentor when I was new to the faith, as long as I stick with the Bible I have all the fatherly spiritual guidance I need.

As long as I stick with what Peter and the Apostles taught I'm good. You can keep your pope. Especially considering what he's been saying lately, lol.
What was the thief's works? He confessed that he believed in Jesus. That was all he needed to obtain salvation.
