Luke 17.20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. 24 For the Son of Man in his day[d] will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32 Remember Lot’s wife! 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”

37 “Where, Lord?” they asked.

He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”

This passage has been the one fly in the ointment for my understanding of an integrated understanding of the Olivet Discourse. I don't even know if it was part of the Olivet Discourse, or a reiteration of the same. However, I believe it can be integrated directly into the synoptic versions of the Olivet Discourse, Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, without inconsistency.

My own view of this Discourse is that although Jesus was asked about his 2nd Coming, and about his Kingdom, the emphasis was largely on that generation, and on the Jewish People. It was still the OT era, and Israel alone were God's Chosen People. And so, acting as a prophet like Jeremiah, Jesus predicted the fall of Jerusalem, due to the fallen spiritual condition of the Jewish People. This would take place sooner, rather than later, just as Jeremiah had also predicted in his own time about the Babylonian Judgment.

The Olivet Discourse is in itself a reiteration of Daniel's prophecy of the 70th Week, in which Messiah would be cut off for the sins of the people, Jerusalem would fall, and it would come about through an Abomination of Desolation. Obviously, I feel the AoD was the Roman Army that, when it initially came, portended the imminent fall of Jerusalem, and a great exile, of great tribulation, to come. This Great Tribulation of the Jewish People would last throughout the present age until the Kingdom finally comes. In the meantime, Jesus' disciples would suffer the world in this fallen condition, just as the prophets suffered in their own time. It was a call for endurance to the saints.

But Luke 17 above throws in a quandary those who would make the Olivet Discourse a futuristic prophecy, rather than a present one. Jesus indicated that a future Kingdom was not the important thing to grasp at that time, but rather, understanding what can't be seen. People thought that by keeping the Law externally they would be safe from God's judgments. But in reality, Jesus said he was in their midst, and they were not recognizing him.

This was the important thing, to recognize spiritual realities in their midst that called them to true righteousness, rather than to legal observances without true faith. Legal observances had become a coverup for immoral and unjust practices. In the end, the Jews kept their religious observance and crucified the Son of God!

Finally, Jesus depicted how the Jewish People, and eventually other nations, would respond negatively to the Kingdom of God. Christ would be rejected, and the world would persist in their lawlessness, covering up their ungodly ways with acts that only appear good.

Jesus compared how the Jews were failing to receive him in his time with how it will be throughout this age until the Kingdom comes. There would be judgments from God against those who are inwardly false and outwardly pretend to be righteous. In reality, it would be like Sodom and Gomorrah, and like the Flood of Noah--nations would come under judgment, with only a few choosing to live in true righteousness.

Jesus specifically applied this to his own generation, showing that they also would go through a kind of Flood of Noah, and experience destruction like Sodom and Gomorrah. When the Romans came, masses of Jews were put to death, and relatively few survived. The Christians paid heed to Jesus and escaped to Pella.

It helped me to understand that Jesus was not saying this destruction of Jerusalem would happen at the 2nd Coming. Rather, Jesus was characterizing the *entire age* as subject to divine judgment, with few escaping in those times. The 70 AD judgment of Jerusalem was simply an early example of this.

Luke 17.30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

This took place in 70 AD. But it is the condition of the world in every generation, when society collapses into lawlessness. The Kingdom of God is not seen, even when Christianity is in their midst. It was the same in the day Jesus was among the Jews as it will be at the end of the age when he comes again to judge the whole world. The world will have failed to see the Kingdom of God in their midst, just as Israel had failed to see their Messiah in their own midst! And judgment would come unexpectedly.

Addressing the OP.
first we need to address the Kingdom of God problem first. Romans 14:17 "For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost."

the Kingdom of God is the Holy Ghost who is within us, but was not given until after his resurrection. scripture, Luke 17:25 "But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation." BINGO, there is his suffering on the cross. now the Kingdom coming. scripture,
A. Matthew 16:28 "Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom." notice he said, the Son of man, not the Son of God.

B. Luke 9:27 "But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God."

when was these scriptures fullfiled? answer on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit, JESUS Glorified in the Spirit "MANIFESTED" himself in the Spiritual Gifts. supportive scripture. Acts 2:1 "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place." Acts 2:2 "And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting." Acts 2:3 "And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them." Acts 2:4 "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

the Kingdom of God as the apostle stated, Romans 14:17 "For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost." can one see those three things? no, but one can see the manifestation of them, but not them themself.

so the Kingdom of God did come before some standing there in that generation saw death. for the Kingdom of God is in the Holy Ghost. as we should be in HIM.

so that Judgment of 70Ad was fullfiled, and the Kingdom came after his suffering on the cross.

Good post Randy,

"But Luke 17 above throws in a quandary those who would make the Olivet Discourse a futuristic prophecy, rather than a present one. "

I too believe something akin to what you do. I see a dual prophecy going on, past and future. And also, I can see Nero being, probably the most evil Roman Emperor ever, quite an antichrist as well. ..? He was a horrid person. So, It seems, all roads lead to Rome? Far as the "abomination of desolation" Or "the abomination that causes desolation" all that comes to my mind is that when the Anitchrist, or the man of perdition whichever you prefer, steps into the newly built Jewish temple and declares himself to be God, can you see how quickly that temple would become "desolate"? The Jews will welcome him at first but when he stands in that temple...perhaps that is when their eyes will be opened?
Not very up on all things end times, but is so intrigues me. :)

Nancy, you're a very nice person, and I wouldn't dream of pushing my peculiar eschatological views on you, losing your friendship. But this is in fact my forte. And I rarely get sympathy from anybody. So feel free to disagree--I'm used to it!

I hate puffing myself up, but I have to say that I've been face to face with nearly all of the views on the Olivet Discourse. It has been both my passion and my frustration for several decades. I've memorized it, meditated on it, and forgotten it, relegating it to later. What I never expected is that as I became more tolerant towards the different views, I began to look for the good in each of them. After all, all of the views are held by Christians. I should think there was something in each view that appealed to their spiritual interests?

What I found is that as undesirable as Preterism was to me, they held a view not exactly to what I hold now, but with similarities. I discovered that they held in common some beliefs about this that the Early Church held to.

And that's why I don't believe the Abomination of Desolation is the Antichrist. Call it a foreshadowing of Antichrist, or a "dualism," if you like. I just think Dan 9.27 plainly spelled out the same thing that the Olivet Discourse spelled out, that the "city and the sanctuary would be destroyed" by this "abomination of desolation" (Dan 9.26-27).

We are often told that the "Great Tribulation" is the suffering of the saints in the time of Antichrist, because the "great tribulation" is mentioned in Rev 7 in connection with the "great multitude from all nations." But Jesus was in the Olivet Discourse addressing the Israeli nation as a prophet, informing them that due to their intense sinfulness judgment was coming in their generation.

And it did, in 70 AD and following. Not only so, but this was just the beginning of a long era of Jewish tribulation, that would last, according to Jesus, until the end of the age. Christians would, in the meantime, suffer in the carnage experienced under judgment from God during the NT era, particularly as nations fell into decline and moral depravity.

I'm not a Preterist, but I do believe that Daniel, in chs. 2 and 7, laid out a prophecy of a "4th Kingdom," which many agree was Rome. And this would be the last Kingdom of the age, of prophetic significance, before the coming of the Kingdom of Christ.

If Rome fell in 476 AD, and if Constantinople in the East fell in 1453 AD, how on earth could this prophecy of Rome, as the 4th and last Kingdom, be fulfilled? My belief is that European Civilization absorbed Roman Civilization, and continues to be, in some way, the 4th and last Kingdom.

In the last days Daniel foresaw this 4th Kingdom becoming a "Divided Kingdom," ultimately becoming a 10 nation confederation ruled over by the Antichrist. It would be a Beast with 10 horns and 7 heads, ie 10 nations and 7 leaders, because Antichrist will, according to the prophecy, defeat 3 of the leaders in assuming power.

This is just a little look into my thinking. Most reject my view because in the present time futurism reigns supreme, and consigns such ideas to "Preterism." But it isn't really Preterism, and is actually what the Early Church believed, for the most part. I leave you with your own thoughts about it. Take care...

Ah yes, agreed amigo,
I will have to save the video for tomorrow as, it is late here and am ready to turn in. But, yes...things are happening fast, and we are seeing His living Word and prophecy becoming fulfilled, or...in the process of becoming fulfilled. His words of prophecy becomes clearer as we watch the set being staged...and hoards will be led like a lamb to the slaughter. We must all pray for our unsaved friends, loved ones, neighbors...when it blows up...they will be looking for Christians to tell them what they must do...questions are already being asked.
I promise to watch the vid. tomorrow @amigo de christo

Perhaps you misunderstand my view of all this? The Olivet Discourse focuses on Jesus' own generation, and warns them about false Christs and false prophets, which indeed were present in Israel and in the Early Church. But this doesn't in the least mean Jesus' prophecies were exhausted with that generation!

On the contrary, Jesus identified the fate of the Jewish People as taking place over a "last days" period, in which Israel lies in Diaspora for a very long period of time--the worst judgment in her history! And so, what happened in Jesus' generation was just the start of a long age of suffering both for Jews and for Christians, Christians not really having a place to lay their heads. Over time, even Christian nations fall into decadence, and those nations fall, leaving Christians in precarious situations.

At the end of this long period of suffering, the Antichrist will rise. His deceptions will be the same as existed in the Early Church. Although the Gentiles will have been reached out to, those same nations will continue to fall back into paganism, deceiving both themselves and God's People, just as they have always done.

The lie is simply a call to live a life liberated from the restraint of God's word to our conscience. To live independent of God is a false euphoria, and will lead to unexpected judgment. That is the lie that exists now and will exist when Antichrist comes. That kind of "liberty," guaranteed by governments, is a false Messiah. We should not follow our nations into sin, but continue to endure in our testimony. In keeping our testimony we shall save our souls!

This took place in 70 AD. But it is the condition of the world in every generation, when society collapses into lawlessness. The Kingdom of God is not seen, even when Christianity is in their midst.

There is nothing new under the sun...

Come out of the world...
