In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus spoke nothing about The Spirit. No Spirit filled Believer follows the things Jesus spoke of doing in that Sermon.
There are no Jesus University educated Spirit filled Disciples within today's Church who follow the Sermon on the Mount.Would they have understood it if He did? You start with Kindergarten, not University. That was His first sermon. He would not have spoken of His Spirit until the end. After all NO ONE was Spirit-filled until after His resurrection, including the disciples.

If you make the beatitudes into laws that must be obeyed you will fall into the same trap as the Jews trying to obey Moses. Jesus is outlining a state or condition of heart we have when we are saved, an inner life to be lived by faith, even the life He gives.
He did not say anything about faith being part of the correct view of the Law.
Rather, He spoke of the consequential rewards for following the Law coming only from an enhanced pragmatic understanding of the Law. He neither spoke nor implied "faith."
If you look at the Luke’s Gospel it states that many of his disciples were there and those who desired healing. He looked to his disciples, but the crowds still heard the sermon. Constantly he refers to ‘ you have heard ‘ and then opens up the teaching. Those who proclaimed the message to them would have been the religious leaders. He continuously references comparisons. I do believe he was directly sending a message to the religious leaders through his words as well as speaking to those who were following him.
The OP asks our opinion, I gave mine. I never just take an account from one gospel but tend to look at what it says in the other gospels.

God gave the Ten ( actually 613 ) Commandments to show that nobody could keep them....
Jesus was saying essentially—-“ Think you’re “ Fit For Heaven” because you never committed Adultery? Think again— If you ever even harbored a Lustful “ thought”, you are as Guilty as the man who goes through with the Act”
Mankind is hopelessly Lost and Depraved— “DEAD in Trespasses and Sin” and only Jesus can fix it—
You are seriously deluded if you think that you can keep the 613 Commandments ....they were never expected to be kept perfectly ...
By contrast, if you think you can “ Keep” Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount” ......you are insane.
Yeah, maybe you think you are “ hot stuff” because you never killed anybody. Wake up , Sinner..... if you ever even “ hated “ somebody you are as guilty as a Murderer in the Eyes Of God ...

Paul neither quoted nor undertook any of the material specifications illustrated by Jesus in the Sermon. Paul merely stopped sinning as a hypocritical Pharisees. But Paul did, he said the Jews had a zeal for the law but they did not pursue it with faith.
This thread is not addressing what I personslly think or believe. It concerns the material within the Sermon on the Mount. The account of Jesus' Sermon in Luke is speaking of a different Sermon. It was spoken on a Plain.
But the Sermon on the Mount was clearly spoken to Jesus' disciples (perhaps even only the twelve)...Matthew 5:1-2.
And, in Galatians 6:13, we find this to be true. The letter of the law can be kept by no one.
But it should be qualified by saying that the righteousness of the law can be fulfilled in those who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit (Romans 8:4). And that this is talking about the spirit of the law is evident in Romans 7:6.
Yep...those who have not been redeemed are normally filled with lust.
Those who have been redeemed have been delivered from lust (2 Peter 1:4, Titus 3:3, Ephesians 2:3).
Now you're talking! the point is, Jesus can fix it....and not just by dealing with the penalty for our sins. He fixes it by dealing with the sins themselves (Matthew 1:21, Titus 2:14).
Right...the 613 commandments were intended to show us that we cannot be saved by our works.
Now, once we have been saved through faith in Christ, the righteousness of the law gets to be fulfilled in us (Romans 8:4, Galatians 5:22-23).
2Co 5:13, For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause.
Hos 9:7, The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.
2Ti 1:7, For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Those who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb may in fact be considered to be insane by worldly people...but the scripture testifies to the fact that they are in all reality of sound mind.
See Titus 3:3-7.
We were once hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness of god our Saviour appeared, He saved us by His mercy...by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
I can testify that all of the hatred that I had before I became a believer is gone...it has been replaced by the love of God which is shed abroad in my heart through the Holy Ghost (Romans 5:5).
The Sermon on the Mount is not the only scripture.
Do you agree that the Sermon on the Mount is a law?
I think you do; for the Sermon on the Mount is a law.
Well, in Galatians 5:22-23, it says that there is no law that will condemn the behaviour of a man who bears the fruit of the Spirit.
So then, having the Holy Spirit, and then bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit, means that you will not be doing things in violation of the Sermon on the Mount.
That the Sermon on the Mount is something that is set forth for us to obey should be evident in Matthew 7:24-27.
Therefore it is not only given to show us that we are sinners in need of a Saviour (while it does do that, Galatians 3:24, Romans 3:20, Psalms 19:7 (kjv)).
It is, again, given as something that we are to be obedient to (see James 1:22-25).
I think Paul lived no longer Paul but Christ lived in Him and the life he then lived he lived by the faith of the Son of God ... this is the grand way to live out the sermon on the mount.Paul neither quoted nor undertook any of the material specifications illustrated by Jesus in the Sermon. Paul merely stopped sinning as a hypocritical Pharisees.

Quibbling about the locations of each of the two Sermons on the Plain and Mount is not needed. The best solution will be to call them a composite Sermon on the Mesa.
This thread is not addressing what I personally think or believe. It concerns the material within the Sermon on the Mount.
Therefore, please avoid the word "you."
Neither any individual nor segment within Christendom follows the Spirit of the Law as given by Jesus on the Mount <fify>. At most there occur only talk such as motivational preaching from pulpits, professionally published material, lay speculation in Sunday School, confession with handwringing, a message of tokenism, and imaginary stories of compliance.
No person lives out the Sermon on the Mount given by Jesus to be done within any theorized "faith."
As I stated......some don’t “ GET” it.....Here’s your Evidence.....Still obsessed with what “ HE” does for God as opposed to the TRUTH of the Gospel —— The Gospel That Saves ( 1Cor15:1-4 ) is what God has done for man....NOT what man does for God....
Satan proved Eons ago what Pride does to a being.....it’s still around today.....
Now, we know, if we read our Bibles well enough, that He has perfected for ever them who are sanctified (Hebrews 10:14). That this is practical and not only positional should be evident in such verses as 1 John 3:7, Romans 5:19, and Matthew 5:6.Good Luck with that Doctrine .....
Personally, I know that I can’t be Perfect and the Standard that Jesus set for Self-Justification is exactly THAT! PERFECTION ! 24/7.........” Ye are to be PERFECT, even as your Father in Heaven is Perfect”......
For those of you out there that are like me , and realize that they can never be “ perfect” and all the attempts that they make to try and “ be” perfect merely reinforce the Truth that they “ can’t” do it —— grab hold of this “ loop- hole” that is Found In the Bible —- Simply Believe That Jesus died for your sins and rose from the grave and God has Promised that even though you ain’t nowhere “ near” perfect.....He will “ Consider “ you Perfect and declare you “ Fit For Heaven”.....
It ain’t called “ Good News” for no reason.....Put your TOTAL Trust in a Promise Of God.....that’s what “ Faith” is....Faith is what Saves....REST in the Promise of 1Cor15:1-4.....God Bless...
There is no rule on these boards that will prevent me from addressing you as "you".Therefore, please avoid the word "you."
What makes you say that? There are no Jesus University educated Spirit filled Disciples within today's Church who follow the Sermon on the Mount.
