Greetings in Christ!

In Revelation Chapter 3:18, the Lord asked believers to "buy from Him" (i.e. pray to Him for*) three things, and this passage is believed to prophetically parallel our own time. If that's the case, which of these things are you praying for?

1. A faith tried in the fires of adversity (i.e. sufferings)
2. A life clothed in the Spirit of God, by which ones sins do not appear, and
3. Eyes opened spiritually to see the world as God does.

I leave it open to discussion. A further explanation of the passage and its interpretation is provided below. The points of this interpretation are open to discussion as well.

God bless,
Hidden In Him

14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot: I would you were cold or hot. 16 So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew your out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, "I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing," and know not that you are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18 I counsel you to buy of Me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich; and white raiment, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness does not appear; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent.

The currency of Heaven is indeed prayer, not that we can in any way "earn" anything from God - they are attained only by grace - but we are told in scripture to beseech Him for the things we desire, for "the fervent prayer of a righteous man has great strength," and "And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive if you have faith.”

1. "Gold tried by fire" is also referred to in 1st Peter as "a faith tried in the fire." The metaphor refers to attaining to a place where sufferings have burned away all but the desire for whatever God wants in our lives.

2. "White Raiment" refers to being "clothed upon" in the Spirit of God. The reason that the shame of our nakedness can no longer be seen is because this covers over it. All of us have sins, even those closest to God, but when the Spirit of God is poured out upon us and overshadows us, all the world can see is the Lord manifesting Himself through us.

3. "Eye Salve" refers to an anointment that was used to heal the eyes that one could see better, and more clearly. Spiritually, it refers essentially to seeing things as God sees them, especially as regards sin, true Christian teaching, religious deception, and the spiritual schemes of our enemy.

I remember asking for God to give me faith and it's been testy, as you know, and then the second one I feel like I'm constantly working through anyway. The third I feel like God did on his own overtime. So the second and third I don't remember ever praying for but God is working me through.

I feel like that second and the third come through lessons learned over a lifetime and seeking him.

In other words, I wasn't totally given a choice and I was put in a position of striving for what he wanted anyways.

I would add another question....is the focus of our prayers ourselves?
If you're the temple for the Holy Spirit and God wants to use you to work through you, isn't it important to pray for yourself?

For example, if I don't take supplements and take care of myself, I could end up in the hospital or die a very slow death over the course of years, and then my children would suffer. (I have B-12 deficiency anemia, just explaining I'm not talking like a multivitamin for a fad, I actually need it)

If people don't ask God to become spiritually fit themselves, then God's children could and do suffer. We already see that in our churches. Our pastors and leaders need those things.

(edit: sorry I was distracted)

The operative word bugalugs is 'focus'. And while this subject is alive, consider the many songs that are sung that pass as worship.....where is the focus?.....and observe how we rationalise putting self on the throne.

I probably pray for 3 most often. I want to see as God sees. First and foremost, not on that list, but to see others as God sees them in eyes of love. When I can see others through God's eyes, then I am able to see past them to the real enemy. I can follow the Great Commission and share with them easier about the salvation of the Lord. I also think of wisdom with spiritual eyes. King Solomon asked God for wisdom, and he was blessed over and above that. Id like to have eyes to never be deceived by the enemy...discernment as to when the right time to call it out is... and when to just be silent and let God handle it.

For number one, I usually pray like, "Lord, let me be strong enough to stand in faith whenever adversity comes." I have had times I have asked God to "make my faith stronger." But it isnt my fondest go to in asking to try my faith with adversity. I think this is where more eye solve comes in handy, to see how important it is to have the desire for whatever God wants in our lives and pray accordingly, no matter the cost.

Number 2 I earnestly desire and need to pray more about. I do just want others to see Christ in me. Who doesn't want to live life clothed in the Spirit of God.

I would say our focus should be on God and His kingdom.

"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
Matthew 6:33

Heaven isn't going to go bankrupt no matter what. God does bless us with the desires of our hearts. But when we pray for our desires to match with God's, we get more bang for our buck since "all these things are added to us". God abundantly blesses and prospers His children way above our needs.

Interesting you would bring this up.

1. Well I haven't prayed for any of those, I usually pray for my family and friends. But I have definitely been tried lately and my faith stayed fairly strong, lots of medical problems lately along with the pandemic times and rioting.

2. I'm learning that if I watch daily Mass I'm tempted less, which I'm sure applies to service of the Lord, but I haven't had that many service opportunities.

3. I feel like I'm seeing the world more like God too.

Wow, yeah I'm seeing all of that definitely lately. Cheers!

I pray that Abba Yah Breathe His Holy Breath into this Body and raise us up into the heavenly places in Yahshua ha Mashiach. And I pray to be objective with the Mind of Messiah that we may do the good works that He has prepared for us to do. Amen.

I've always seen the first one... The gold... Not as my faith, but character. The dross and impurities removed from my character. But I can certainly understand how appropriate it is for faith to be tried and strengthened.
The white raiment I see as Christ's righteousness. I do not see this as a covering for sin, but a covering of my nakedness... My utter dependency upon Him for all things. Without Him I am nothing. I can do nothing. The uselessness of filthy rags and fig leaves. I am wretched, poor, blind and naked.
The eye salve is that I may constantly recognise the above. Recognise my need of Him at all times and in every circumstance. The latter isn't about me... Its about Christ and His work in and through me... Prayer isn't about our will being done, us about His will.. His purpose. We are Laodicean. We need to repent of the Laodicean mindset that we are okay and doing alright. Of being comfortable and complacent. Of being luke warm.

Yes. Some aren't given much of a choice. They experience sufferings whether they asked for them or not. But if they stay faithful to God, the outcome is still the same. They will enter Heaven spiritually rich, and be rewarded for trusting in Him even through the hardships.

Agreed, and excellent point. Btw, sorry I didn't tag you. I meant to but then my mind drifted when I was trying to remember everyone I wanted to tag. Speaking of which, @Nancy, @lforrest, @Josho, @April_Rose, @Helen.

About this, I agree. These things need to be prayed for in a spirit of humility, wanting the will of God to be done in our lives. I think that's one of the things the 1st one tends to burn away in us, is the desire to make ourselves out to be something when we are not.

Thanks for the post : )

Wow. What a wonderful post. When I think of "seeing as God sees," I always tend to migrate towards thinking about having a greater and more accurate understanding of scripture; of receiving ever-increasing revelation from God on His word, on what the Spirit is saying to the churches, and on what is coming in the future. But having eyes to see others the way God sees them as well is a beautiful thing to be praying for.
For number one, I usually pray like, "Lord, let me be strong enough to stand in faith whenever adversity comes." I have had times I have asked God to "make my faith stronger." Very good answer, IMO. It's not an easy prayer to make when you are asking for a faith purified by the fires of hardships. I think most Christians today would think you were nuts to even ask for such a thing. But that's the whole problem: They don't see yet what it means to be rich towards God. Their minds are still locked up in the mentality of this world.
Number 2 I earnestly desire and need to pray more about. I do just want others to see Christ in me. Who doesn't want to live life clothed in the Spirit of God.

Amen. I wish this one especially were the prayer of more of the saints of God in our time. How can they know our religion is more than just a set of beliefs if the power of God is not made manifest through us, and in our lives?

@quietthinker , Uh, I wouldn't read too much into that, yes we should pray for others, but there is nothing wrong with praying for yourself, the Lord Jesus prayed for himself, but acknowledged God's will over his own fate:

Matthew 26:39 - And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou [wilt].

This is one of those passages that never gets old. I return to it often because it's so deep, and gets to the very heart of what our spiritual condition is and what we need to ask for most from God.

Thanks for the response.

I've always seen the first one... The gold... Not as my faith, but character. The dross and impurities removed from my character. But I can certainly understand how appropriate it is for faith to be tried and strengthened.

Well it is. It is our character - our soul - that is purified when our faith is tested. This seems to be the tenor of his meaning in 1st Peter:

6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, you are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory, at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

The praise and honor and glory he is speaking of is our own, and it comes by demonstrating a life completely submitted and sacrificed unto God.

Again, I think it is, i.e. Christ's righteousness in us. Now about your statement that, "I do not see this as a covering for sin, but a covering of my nakedness," I once thought this myself. But on looking closer at the text, I've come to realize He is saying "that the shame of your nakedness not appear." It dawned on me that the nakedness and the shame actually remains, at least as far as that we all still struggle with sin, and they still "so easily beset us." But the covering has a way of justifying us anyway. As Paul said, "If God be for us, who can be against us." All our sins are indeed still as filthy rags, but in spite of it we are clothed in the white raiment, pure and holy.
The eye salve is that I may constantly recognise the above. Recognise my need of Him at all times and in every circumstance. The latter isn't about me... Its about Christ and His work in and through me... Prayer isn't about our will being done, us about His will.. His purpose.

Amen. I think that's the biggest part of it. I can't relate to forms of Christianity that are not "Christ within us" centered; it makes us far less judgmental of others, because after all, everyone else is just as we are. The only difference becomes, is Christ in us, and manifesting Himself through us.

'Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing;
and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich;

and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.'

(Rev 3:17)

Hello @Hidden In Him,

I believe that the Apocalypse contains a record (by vision and prophecy) of the events which shall happen 'in the day of the Lord': that the whole book is concerned with the Jew, the Gentile, and the Earth, but not with the Church of God, or with Christendom; or with the latter only so far as the present corruption of Christianity shall merge in the great apostasy, and form part of it, after the Church, the Body of Christ, shall have been removed.

* But there will be a people for God on the earth during those eventful years. There will be the remnant of believing Israelites; the 144,000 sealed ones; the great multitude; and other bodies of faithful ones who are referred to all through the book (see ch.7, ch11, & 12:17). In which latter passage we read of 'the remnant of her (the woman's) seed', which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

* Yet there are lessons which we can learn from these passages, and which we may apply.

* The seven letters each have reference to a stage in Israel's history, and the one of Loadicea that you have chosen has reference to the period of Judah's removal (the minor prophets), the lowest point of Israel's degradation, and departure from God. The whole of Hosea 2-5 & 12:8, needs to be read to see the pointed reference to this stage of Israel's condition. Compare also (Haggai 1:6; Jeremiah 13:25-26; Jeremiah 5:27; Zechariah 11:5; Zechariah 11:13-18) .

* The prayers particularly of interest to me, are those found in the prison epistles, for they have direct reference to the needs of the Church which is the Body of Christ. (Ephesians 1:17-23 & 3:14-21) (Philippians 1:9-11) (Colossians 1:9-14); but mostly I ask that His will be done.

Thank you for including me.
With love in Christ Jesus
Chris

1. A faith tried in the fires of adversity (i.e. sufferings) <---- Even though it took me many years to truly understand what "faith" is, it just hit me one day about not seeing what we hope for as, that is not really hoping as you can "see" it. So, faith to me has become something that keeps me from worry and fear over anything. Even if something does not turn out as I had prayed, I know He has something better.

2. A life clothed in the Spirit of God, by which ones sins do not appear, and <---- Never thought of this as a "now" thing. But a "then" thing after finishing the race but a closer read sure does say to 'buy' these things from Christ. I can't imagine myself clothed in such holiness, I'd feel fraudulent, not worthy :O But how I would love this. My only question here would be that, didn't God remove our sins sf far as the East is from the West? And if so, why would we need something to, well, "hide" sins? Prob. way off here but, it's what comes to mind bro.

3. Eyes opened spiritually to see the world as God does.

Ah, this one has grown exponentially with me! The area I now live in is very close to a poor neighborhood and there are many junkies, and alcoholics and just plain lost or homeless. We CAN feed them, cloth them and try to find places they can stay for a week or so at a time. We can pray for them and I do but, some do not want that so, silent prayer then.

There is not much I pray for for myself unless along these lines. To experience His peace is like nothing other, I understand now what "resting in Him" means...it's a freedom, really. His joy is what I chase after all the time as, over the last few years, that has lagged as I go from blue to blah mostly anymore.

My prayers are mostly for family, friends and those I see on the streets. Oh yes, and for His true joy, strength, holiness and for purpose in this world.

Good post HIH, thanks for the invite :)
