I sometimes think I am better off dead. I don't mean to attract sympathy by saying that or to be controversial.
I just feel despairing of avoiding sin. It's impossible to lead a sinless life. Even with God's grace.
To live is to sin is my conclusion. To want to live is to sin even. Why do I want to live? To achieve ambitious goals? To seek entertainment and pleasure? Even to gain status by showing others how I've discovered the truth in Jesus Christ? To prove my superior intellect? To trade insults with people online?
The list goes on. Life is the battleground of Satan versus Jesus in our hearts. And Satan at least wins some of the time. Once we are dead, the struggle ceases. No more conflict. No more opportunities to sin. Peace.
Paul struggled with this same problem as everyone does.(Rom. 7) It is a war between the flesh and the spirit.
Not to worry, Satan is defeated, he just tries to trip us up. We are in Christ, sealed by the Holy Spirit.

Hi, if you would mind me saying something;

When someone sees that only by their death can they be freed from sin, freedom from sin is just a matter of by faith reckoning themselves dead to sin.. Self effort is eliminated, and then by faith in the operation of God in their heart, is the fruit of that faith revealed and realized...A faith that will not be disappointed...

Be blessed in being one step away from being set free from yourself, which is the same thing as being set free from sin...

Thanks for reading, hope it blesses...

A fellow servant of His, Not me

Sorry but I'm relatively new to Christianity and the Bible.
You have to start where you are as we all had to do. There are lots of scriptures giving us details, but the verse from which @Nancy quote a few words above is an excellent starting place as well as an explanation of what you should continue to seek...

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matt 6:33

don't you see you just said that God is a liar

for it is written
For with God nothing shall be impossible.
You think the Pope doesn't sin?
The saints never sin?
Mother Teresa?
Even you sin sir, or is it madam?

Yes everyone is a sinner to some degree, but the bible teaches against certain gross sins, there are things we do which deliver us from sin, and the bible teaches against sin. But I think the important thing here is that you said you are new to Christianity, we all need time to develop in the Holy Spirit and Christ. Christ and the Holy Spirit purifies us from sin over time as we seek Godly desires. This is a good scripture section I really find helpful maybe you will too:

Galatians 5:16-26

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

You said:"I sometimes think I am better off dead."

Understandable and true, and here's proof:

(2Cor.5) "6. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7. For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord."

Carry on in faith.

Hello @saintiaint,

It is not without reason that our bodies are called bodies of humiliation is it? I believe that everyone who reads your post understands very well what you are saying and why.

* However, it is also true that we have died with Christ, and been raised with Christ to newness of life. It is by reckoning ourselves to be dead indeed unto sin but alive unto God that victory is assured us, isn't it? In fact our whole Christian life is a reckoning of faith: faith in the completeness of the finished work of God in Christ Jesus on our behalf.

* We are told that if we say we have no sin, we lie, and the truth is not in us: but if we confess our sin, He is just, and will forgive us our sin, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

* In your eyes a 'saint-you-aint', but in God's eyes 'in Christ Jesus', a 'saint-you-are'. For He also reckons you to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto Him in Christ Jesus our Lord. He is our righteousness. Praise God!

* Colossians 3:1-17

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

Once we are dead, the struggle ceases. No more conflict. No more opportunities to sin

Angels sinned who were never alive in the flesh; ponder that for a moment my friend (2 Peter 2:4).

Most likely through suffering

Right on point; as the scripture says:

1 Peter 4:1
[1] Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin

Paul struggled with this same problem as everyone does.(Rom. 7)

No he did not. He was describing the state of a person in the flesh; for in Romans 8 he gives the remedy to the situation in Romans 7:

Romans 8:9
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Contrast with:

Romans 7:5
For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members

You think the Pope doesn't sin?
The saints never sin?
Mother Teresa?
Even you sin sir, or is it madam?

Let the all knowing God be the judge of these matters. We are to judge those within, not those outside.

1 Corinthians 5:12-13
[12] For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? [13] But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

I always aim for humility. Not that it works every time.
Same here @saintiaint
Satan can get us to become proud of our humility at times, haha. Gotta glue up our cracks so he can't get into our minds.
I once thought I was naturally humble because of shyness...well, He sure showed me different  We win some and lose some battles but the war itself has been won and God has the booty! :D

If you have truly obeyed Acts 2:38, you are free from sin. Meaning you can resist and win. Meaning, you MUST resist.

No he did not. He was describing the state of a person in the flesh; for in Romans 8 he gives the remedy to the situation in Romans 7:

Romans 8:9

Contrast with:

Romans 7:5
For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members

Well, you are among some who believe that we do not still have the flesh and sin that dwells therein, memories of our old self, old habits. We are in the spirit, IN CHRIST, but the flesh (sarx) wars against the spirit.
Are you just a spirit floating Around?
We died to the flesh, are no longer slaves to Sin, but nevertheless we still do sin. It is not sin into death. But try to distinguish the things other unbelievers do that you say are sins and claim that you do not do those same things. We do not pravtice them as before, but blackside into our old ways. Hiw could you quench the Holy Spirit if you were perfect. Spiritually you are ckeansed and if you died today, you would be separated from the flesh and would go to God spotless.
"For the flesh lusts against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish." Gal. 5:17
Peter is speaking to Christians in this following verse: "Beloved, I urge you as foreigners and strangers to abstain from fleshy lusts, which wage war against the soul. " 1 Peter 2:11
"If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." 1 John 1:8
Think about that, flip it around. If the truth is in us, we say we have sin.
We still have temptations and fall into them ---- unless of course you think you now live a perfect life???
Do you now? Why do you ask someone who knows you of they think you are perfect in every way? No, ask everyone. Because what you are claiming is that when you were born again, at that moment, you never did anything wrong again.

We are living in the already but not yet realm. We have not been redeemed yet, but we exist in eternity as it has already happened - spiritually. And as if our flesh died. We are to reckon it dead everyday! Are you dead yet? We are saved. CHRIST died for all our sins, meaning past present and future sins - sins you haven't committed yet.
Oh well, I tried, but you probably won't get it. We have a dual nature until we die. THEN you will be perfect.

Well, you are among some who believe that we do not still have the flesh

Job 21:3
Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

Romans 6:11
...reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 8:13
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Are you just a spirit floating Around?

1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

You are a natural man, not a spiritual. Get spiritual and leave off the flesh and then you will understand these things.

Romans 8:5
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

nevertheless we still do sin

Romans 6:15
What then? shall we sin, because we are... under grace? God forbid.

Speak for yourself and be not proud.

"If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." 1 John 1:8
Think about that, flip it around.

I meditate on scriptures often.

Perhaps you should read that scripture in full understanding:

1 John 1:7-8
[7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. [8] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Every believer has been cleansed from ALL their sins (leaving NONE). He is in effect without sin. The deceived ones in the passage have NOT been cleansed but believe they have no sin regardless. For the same author in the SAME letter writes:

1 John 2:1
[1] My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.

And:

1 John 3:8 KJVS
[8] He that committeth sin is of the devil

And:

1 John 3:9
[9] Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin

Why do you ask someone who knows you of they think you are perfect in every way?

Because I base my observations on scriptures, not the opinions of men.

We are living in the already but not yet realm.

If you want to enter the “not yet” realm, LIVE HOLY NOW!

Especially after being born again (which is the only way living holy matters).

We have not been redeemed yet, but we exist in eternity as it has already happened - spiritually. And as if our flesh died

Got scriptures to back this up?

Acts 17:20
[20] For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

CHRIST died for all our sins, meaning past present and future sins - sins you haven't committed yet.

There are no scriptures to support this commonly spread lie in the so-called churches these days regarding present and future sins.

We have a dual nature until we die. THEN you will be perfect.

Another lie.

Hear ye what the Lord saith!

Matthew 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

You are in deep sleep with the lullabies of men:

1 Corinthians 15:34
Awake to righteousness, and sin not

And now I leave you with these words:

Isaiah 28:22
Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong
