In the book of Jeremiah it says,
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Does this apply to Christians? Or have we been given a new heart that is not desperately wicked?
Ezekiel 36:26
King James Version
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Does having a heart of flesh mean it's no longer desperately wicked?
The reason I ask is because I don't trust my heart. I don't follow my heart because sometimes the things I want are just no good.
So I figured I'd ask for insight.
our natural heart in its fallen state is wicked but God gives us a new heart when we are born again, a new mind through His Spirit that now lives in us. We renew our minds daily as Paul tells us below and we are transformed into His likeness.
Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Ephesians 4:23
to be renewed in the spirit of your minds;
Ephesians 4:24
and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Colossians 3:1-4
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Its all a battle in our minds. Sin is conceived in the mind first before it is carried out and acted upon. Its why memorizing Scripture and hiding Gods word in our hearts is so important. David said thy word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you.
James 1:13-15
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
