Matthew 25:2, Jesus introduces the 10 virgins by dividing them into two clear categories, five were foolish and five were wise, what makes this story so chilling is how identical all 10 women look at the very beginning. If you were standing on the street watching these 10 women gather to wait for the bridegroom, you would not be able to tell the difference between the wise and the foolish. There is an illusion of perfect sameness, all 10 women are invited to the wedding, all 10 women know the bridegroom is coming, all 10 women put on the proper garments for the celebration, go out to the correct location to wait and most importantly, all 10 women have their wooden torches in their hands.

Matthew 25:3-4, outwardly, they are perfectly identical, they all belong to the same group, share the same anticipation and look like they are fully prepared to honor the groom, but Jesus reveals the hidden, fatal flaw of the foolish virgins. The foolish took lamps, but they took no extra oil with them, the wise, however, took flasks of oil along with their lamps, this is where the parable begins to cut deeply into your modern religious practices. A lamp without oil is just a piece of dry wood and a Christian without genuine faith is just a person sitting in a building, the foolish virgins possessed the outward form of readiness, but they completely lacked the inward substance required to sustain it.

The foolish virgins had the appearance of religion, they knew how to hold the torch, where to stand and the vocabulary of the wedding, but they had no inner reservoir of oil. You can look identical to a true believer on the outside, you can attend the same gatherings, sing the same songs, read the same ancient text and speak the same theological language, you can carry the torch of outward morality and religious association, but if you have no inner living relationship with God, you are holding a dry stick in the dark. Your outward religious activities are completely useless without an inward living reality to sustain them.

Matthew 25:5, the tension in the story escalates with a single powerful detail, the bridegroom was delayed for a long time, Jesus is speaking to disciples who likely expected the kingdom of God to arrive in its full glory very soon, they wanted immediate victory and immediate resolution. But Jesus inserts this delay into the story on purpose, he’s warning them that the wait between his departure and his return will be much longer than they anticipate, the delay of the bridegroom is the central test of the entire parable, time is the ultimate revealer of truth. In the short term, a torch with just a few drops of oil on the rags can flare up and look incredibly bright, for a brief moment, the foolish virgins looked just as illuminated as the wise virgins, if the bridegroom had come immediately, the foolish women might have survived the procession.

But the bridegroom delayed and this delay exposes everything, the delay of Jesus is not a sign of his absence, but a brutal test of your spiritual endurance. Waiting for God requires active daily preparation, the passage of time slowly burns away the superficial layers of your faith, testing whether your devotion is built on a temporary emotional high or a deep abiding inner reality. As the hours drag on, the superficial faith of the foolish virgins begins to be exposed, time reveals that they brought no reserve, they prepared for a quick, easy celebration, but they did not prepare for a long, exhausting wait in the dark, as the delay stretches deep into the night, human weakness overtakes the group.

The same measure that tests all people also brings forth all generations wherein the same measure is given to as many generations. It is amazing that nothing is new under the sun...even while God has added "here a little there a little" contributing more and more as time goes on. Still, it is not that we are most foolish, but rather most deceived.

Matthew 7:24-27, on a beautiful sunny day, you would not be able to tell the difference between those two homes, but Jesus warned that the sunny days do not last forever. The storms of life are guaranteed to come, the secret to the surviving house was not the quality of the wood, the secret was entirely in the foundation. Jesus clearly explained what this foundation represents, he said that anyone who hears his words and puts them into practice is like the wise builder.

The issue is not that the foolish virgins lost salvation. The issue is that they were never truly ready. They had lamps, they had appearance, they had association, and they had expectation, but when the bridegroom came, they were shut out because they lacked what was necessary. Jesus ends the parable by saying, “Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh” ~Matthew 25:13. The warning is not “try harder to look ready.” The warning is, do not mistake outward religion for true faith.

Resilience is not built overnight, it is built day by day through small choices of obedience to God. When you choose to forgive someone who hurt you, you are laying a brick on the solid rock. When you choose to be honest, even when lying would be easier, you are digging deeper into the rock. When you choose to love your enemies and pray for them, you are pouring strong cement into your foundation.

The world often tells you to build your foundation on things like your career, your bank account or your social status, but all of these things are exactly like sand. A sudden change in the economy can wash away your bank account, a sudden illness can wash away your career, a bad rumor can destroy your social status, if your entire life is built on these unstable things, you will fall apart when they disappear. Jesus invites you to build your identity and your security on his eternal truths, his love never changes, his promises never fail, when your inner peace is based on the fact that you are loved and saved by God, no earthly storm can destroy you.
