1 John 1:9
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

This verse was never meant to be used over and over as a "get out of hell card." It is how to become a Christian ONCE. It is the same as Repent....and you shall be given the gift of the Holy Spirit, Acts. 2:38.

Why did God provide a city of refuge for Cain? I think it is possible even for a believer to commit murder, unpremeditated....and it can be forgiven. Same for adultery, I think it's possible for a believer to succumb in a weak moment of temptation and be sorry for it afterwards. The only sin that can't be forgiven according to Jesus, is the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. That is the reason we are not to waste our time praying for someone concerning that. All other sins can be forgiven and that is why we are to pray for someone who sins other sins if we know of or see a brother or sister commit any of them.
When Cain sinned, there was no law against what he had done to judge Him by. So he lived, and God put a mark on him so no one would kill him. That mark became a "law" to the people.

There is a difference between murder and killing. It is okay to kill as in war, or in self-defense or to save someone else. Those are not sins. When I committed adultery I became a slave to it, even though I was 30 years old and had gone to church my whole life. It was a sobering surprise to realize AFTER I became born again of the Spirit, that I had never been saved until God took away my DESIRE to commit lawlessness from my sin nature, leaving me with a clean nature. John 15:3. I don't know why you think you could even want to commit lawless sin once all desire to do so has been taken from your nature. You would have to have your sin nature still. That would mean that person is not born again.

Remember Uzza?? He died because he touched something (the ark) holy. He had good intentions, he wanted to steady the ark because the oxen stumbled, but he died (1 Chron. 13:9-13). David was displeased and afraid of God that day (the importance of having the fear of the Lord??). @ProDeo @Judge Hardcastle
There is no fear of punishment when you are like Jesus in this world. There's no reason to be afraid of punishment for sin you are not committing. You folks who think you do not sin should be totally on board with this and defending John's words. Why are you afraid of the punishment for sin that you say you don't commit, and can't commit????? You are literally saying, "be afraid of the consequences of sin that you can't commit."

It's not forgiveness, it's actually freedom/deliverance/liberty and NOT from the "penalty of sin" but FROM SIN (that which holds us captive).
Redemption through Christ means both.

Why do you add the word "penalty"? Are you a sports fan? Are you making a game of this?
The penalty for your past sin did not just go away. You who have the knowledge of the law, and Jesus, your sin must be atoned for through blood sacrifice. God said so, not me.

Do you ever do something against your conscience? I always obey my conscience and stay in peace. That is walking in the Spirit.
I call this walking WITH the Spirit, in cooperation, led by, by inspiration of the Spirit.. .walking IN the Spirit is in holiness where the presence of God is full.

"WHEN" being the catch word.

Until then.....
Okay, then your argument about being fearful doesn't have any basis. You have been saying we need to be fearful. Now you're saying we need to be fearful if/when we sin. And, funny enough, when we commit the sin that some say genuinely born again people can't do! Wow! What a mess.

The problem with OSAS is many use it as a license to sin.
That's their problem.
Whether one agrees with the doctrine of OSAS or not, it was not taught by the Reformers that it meant it was a license to sin. Quite the opposite. In Reformed theology, living in sin means you are not born again in the first place for you to somehow be irretrievably saved. Remember, in Reformed theology, not enduring to the end means you weren't really saved to begin with.

Not everyone going to church is born again of the Spirit. It is an actual life changing experience. Not just a belief of doctrine.
There's no question that most people in the visible church today only have the baptism of John for repentance and are not born again. We know that by how they live. Repentance has no power to make you characteristically obedient to the commands of God. But neither does the experience of being born again mean you have arrived at sinless perfection and that if you don't have that evidence of being born again, you aren't. That is a lie. Plain and simple.

I know Martin Luther seemed to believe in it, and gave his friend advise to SIN BOLDLY to show the power of grace. OSAS is a very dangerous doctrine in the wrong hands.

When born again of the Spirit you are sinless, but far from perfect. You are only righteous, but not holy. Holiness is at the end of the road, not the beginning like when made righteous; when Jesus took away all desire to commit a sin of willful lawlessness. The path to holiness is found in 2 Peter 1:5-7 and when completed by Jesus, you will never stumble. That is when Jesus has completed making us holy.

Read James again. Temptation is not a sin. Acting on a temptation becomes sin.
You're missing what I'm saying. If being born again means the desire to sin disappears altogether that means being born again means never being tempted to commit sin. Jesus was tempted. That means he was not born again in your theology.

1 John was written to believers. 1 John 1:9 is about what a Christian needs to do when he sins (and every Christian sins sometimes).

What do you do, when you sin? Do you obey 1 John 1:9, or do you pretend to be without sin?

Sin is a long way from being presented with a temptation. All I did was turn my mind away from the object of temptation. I never let it give birth to sin. For instance, my husband was a pathological liar and sadist. Whenever I saw a kind man, I would shake my head back and forth violently, rattling my brain to destroy the picture in my mind and quickly turn away and set my mind on something else. I never was "drawn away." Look how far sin is from the initial temptation

14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

The deceitfulness of the flesh and/or the devil.

I know Martin Luther seemed to believe in it, and gave his friend advise to SIN BOLDLY to show the power of grace. OSAS is a very dangerous doctrine in the wrong hands.
No, lol, he was not denying his own theology and telling his friend to purposely sin.

When born again of the Spirit you are sinless, but far from perfect. You are only righteous, but not holy.
You mean legally perfect/righteous? If so' I agree.

The new born babe in Christ is holy in behavior. Just not as holy in behavior as he will be as he grows up.

Holiness is at the end of the road, not the beginning like when made righteous; when Jesus took away all desire to commit a sin of willful lawlessness.
Jesus does not take away the desire to willfully sin. He gives good reason not to. And if you are Reformed in theology you believe you will always be obedient to not sin willfully in disbelief and a rejection of the gospel, and if you do you are showing yourself to have never been born again. Which, ironically, is what you believe.

The path to holiness is found in 2 Peter 1:5-7 and when completed by Jesus, you will never stumble. That is when Jesus has completed making us holy.
So I guess everyone on the path of ever-increasing holiness is not born again/saved. I'm not saved and won't see the Lord until I become holy as you have erroneously defined holiness. This is horrible, un-Biblical doctrine. It's not true at all.

Obviously, I obey Paul and reckon myself free from sin. In other words, I tell myself the truth. Proverbs 23:5 "as a man thinks in his heart so is he." If you keep telling yourself you are a sinner, you will be. It was false teachers that told the post apostolic church that you will "always sin" until you die and your body is resurrected. They had the felonious idea that sin was rooted in the body, not the sin nature. It is our sin nature that is born again clean.

That's a lie of the devil. It is no wonder you live in defeat. The devil teaches defeatism.

Romans 8:9 "But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. "

1 John 5:18 "We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

You're not getting it. Temptation is the desire to sin. Jesus was tempted just as we are. You say if you're really born again you no longer have the desire to sin. Jesus was not born again in your theology.
