The man’s name is Said Abdelrazek. He converted from Islam to Eastern Orthodox Christianity in 2018. There are other cases of converts to Christianity being persecuted in Egypt but this is one of the most extreme, and it is before the Egyptian courts this month.

In much of the world, it is assumed that a person’s religion is inherited from his or her parents. Even where religious communities seem to be co-existing, getting along, people think that for someone to change their religion is a threat to society. This is a problem for anyone converting to Christianity.

“Egyptian authorities interrogated him about his religious beliefs and pressured him to reconsider his faith, monitor other converts, and asked him to delete his social media accounts.”
“In July 2025, Egyptian authorities detained Abdelrazek again without a warrant after he resumed posting about his religious beliefs online. On July 22, Egypt's Supreme State Security Prosecution charged him with ‘contempt for Islam,’ joining a banned terrorist organization, inciting unrest, and disseminating false information. During detention, authorities and inmates physically and psychologically abused Abdelrazek for his conversion.”
This quotes are from the US Commission on International Religious Freedom.

“Egyptian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release him, as he is detained solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of religion and belief.”
--Amnesty International Canada

“According to an October statement from Abdelrazek’s lawyers relayed by Coptic Solidarity, the court had scheduled prosecution and defense arguments for 3 November.”

How much foreign aid does the USA give to Egypt?

For 2025, US foreign aid to Egypt was $223.4 million.
83.9% of this is for economic purposes.
Interestingly enough, this includes:
“Church and faith-based groups”.

I am trying to figure out if that includes mosques.

How much aid does the US give to Egypt over longer periods of time?

“Since 1946, the United States has provided Egypt with over $87 billion in bilateral foreign aid
(calculated in historical dollars—not adjusted for inflation), with military and economic
assistance increasing significantly after 1979.”

You ain't seen NOTHING yet! God is going to CLEAN His house!

Revelation 20:4 Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands.

A few years ago I was in a Christian book store looking around. A woman was in there going through the books, just as I was. She turned to the clerk and asked if they had any books about Chrisitans being persecuted around the world. The clerk thought a minute and said, "It seems like we should ..."

On another occasion, I was in Palatka, Florida, a town of about 10,000. I noticed that there was an exhibit about persecution of Christians set up in a parking lot. I stopped and looked through the exhibit. It was interesting and certainly concerning. I was puzzled about one thing. I was living in Atlanta at the time, a big city. I asked the attendant, "How is it that I live in a large city where we have all kinds of shows, exhibitions and so forth and all shapes and sizes of forums to put them in ... " and I've never seen anything like this exhibit on persecution of Christians. The attendant told me, "We have to have a local church to sponsor us before we can come."

I believe our Foreign Aid strategy has changed a little since 2025. We no longer fund USAID which was a mechanism by which a lot of groups were being funded outside the US, but with US dollars, to further their own agenda, which was worldwide chaos to put it mildly.

Under the Trump Administration we no longer send a unspecified amount to one entity to distribute as they see fit. We are reaching out and asking individual countries what help they want and need. Not an open checkbook but specific.

Religion is a tough war. Every country has their own cultures and their own laws. Not all countries recognize universal laws like freedom of religion. So it can be difficult for other countries to get involved without flexing it's own authority on others.

So that's why a lot of times you see countries use soft tools like tariffs or sanctions put on those countries to make them behave themselves. It doesn't seem to work very well though, in the long run.
It has to be the people themselves that stick together and rise up and make those changes.
It's called a revolution.

In the US the revolution was over money and religion. Protestants wanted to separate from the Catholic church, and we didn't want to pay Britain taxes if we didn't get a voice at the table.

I think the seperation between Catholicism and Protestantism was a lot different than trying to go from Islam to Christianity.

Apostle Paul, who wrote most of the Letters in the New Testament spent a lot of time behind bars and walls.
His sin was questioning the authority of those who controlled the Synagogue on one side and Rome on the other.
The Church and the State.

For now America still has this freedom to choose one's own religion or belief.
And though they clash we have managed for 250 years to live side by side mostly peaceful.
We have bias and bigots and downright mean people, but we don't usually try to send them to jail because they believe a certain way.
Until Biden. Then it was almost a crime to be a Christian but the people said NO.
And many feel with this new wave of DSA democrat party which leans heavily towards Islam, that if we aren't careful we may find our own selves in the same shoes as the man in Egypt.

So now that the funding has ended, let the wars begin. So it seems.

Hugs

To a UK government which relies on Muslim votes and has just introduced a blasphemy law by the back door just for Islam.
Good luck with that Lord Alton.

Here is another case of an Egyptian man who converted from Islam to Christianity, from one of the sources cited in the OP.

<< Marco Girgis was the first convert to try to change his ID to reflect his new Christian faith. He was imprisoned and tortured until he recanted. Said lost everything for his conversion. Both cases send a clear message to anyone else who would like to officially reflect a change of faith away from Islam. >>

Christians in Saudi Arabia?

<< The only Christians are foreign workers and businessmen. The country’s once small Jewish population is now apparently extinct. Other religions are practiced among foreign workers. Public worship and display by non-Muslim faiths is prohibited. >>

I once went to a Baptist church that I don’t usually attend. They had a speaker who was an expert on foreign missions. On the way out, I shook hands with him and asked him, “Are there any Christians in Saudi Arabia?” He paused and said, “They have to be very discreet.”
