true this of course was written to the church these churchs are types of church's today What was this church doing that was so wrong? They strayed from Christ and His teachings, and in their believing in the Word of God. The focus of their worship was not Christ, but worldly matters.

In Hebrews 6:1 and 9:14, God says the "works" of man are "dead"/no good. In John 6:28 and 29, He is very explicit how "works" should be performed. In order to worship in spirit and truth, we should be "good and right and true" (Ephesians 5:9) speaking in no uncertain terms (Matthew 5:37, James 5:12, 2 Thessalonians 2:10) so that our behavior/thoughts/words glorify God, not ourselves. We should not nullify the grace of God and try to be justified by our own efforts (1 Corinthians 2:21, Hebrews chapter 6, JESUS is our ONLY foundation and we can only repent/be justified IN CHRIST).The Lord is no more explicit in Rev. 2 than to specify that they depended on "toil" (works/deeds in order to gain REWARD instead of simply RESTING in God's graciousness). The church had "abandoned" the "LOVE" they first had for The Lord and decided to base their relationship/devotion and hope for eternal life (1 Corinthians 13:13) on their own efforts/works/deeds/toil instead of humbly accept The Lord's FREE and gracious GIFT (any effort to repay is futile and a mockery of His graciousness).

It appears that in Ephesians 2:10 we are saved, a creative and finished work of Christ, for good works. "For we are His workmanship creaed in Christ Jesus for good works that we should walk in them." Eph 2:10. God gets the bragging rights when we, with our new lives and the power of the Holy Spirit, walk in the good works prepared for us. It was the lack of such good works, the ones designed to follow from the power inherent from our finished salvation, that caused Jesus to criticize the 5 churches of Rev 2-3, beginning with the words, "I know your works." Some Christians grieve the Holy Spirit when they fail to respond to the power of the Holy Spirit given them and walk in the "good works which God prepared before hand that they should walk in them" as trophies of His wonderful and powerful grace. Some of course, lacking true spiritual power, or even salvation, try to counterfeit good works and fool themselves into believing that if they do enough, God will be impressed, and save them. samy
