The "Yeah, but..." school of doctrine - Bible versus Bible

I should add, I do find it fatal error to think baptism is necessary for salvation as the Campbellites do. Even the Lutherans who believe in baptismal regeneration by the word, do not teach it is absolutely necessary for salvation.

The "Yeah, but..." school of doctrine - Bible versus Bible

You wrote "there are real tensions in the text that cannot be resolved". I believe God the Holy Spirit inspired words that were to be understood, while some may be more difficult than others, but I do not see God inspiring words conveying thoughts that "cannot be resolved". The purpose of an...

The "Yeah, but..." school of doctrine - Bible versus Bible

In stead of using a label in a pejorative manner, try exegeting the particular verses the Calvinists use, and disprove them with scripture. Try doing away with the following clear verse: "And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were...

The "Yeah, but..." school of doctrine - Bible versus Bible

Because I embrace believer's baptism by immersion I believe most Protestants and Roman Catholics are in error on baptism. But, I do not find method of baptism a cardinal doctrine. As to immersion, the Greek Orthodox Church has always practiced immersion so there is clear historic evidence for...

The "Yeah, but..." school of doctrine - Bible versus Bible

There is just One Holy Spirit so he inspires and illuminates one truth. One group of Bible scholars come up with something different from the overall universal church, the body of Christ, you must ask where is the weight of the evidence? Is it the history of the church on its exposition or...

Major Baptists from the Past who were Post-Mil

From Manual of Theology (1857) by Baptist John L. Dagg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_L._Dagg "He stated explicitly, that the day will not come, "unless there be a falling away first, and the man of sin be revealed."It was necessary that time should be allowed for the Romish apostasy. So...

Christ Divinity, Scriptural Testimony (of the Apostles) (Complete)

"For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted(G3985), he is able to succour them that are tempted." (Heb 2:18 KJV) "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted(G3985) like as we are, yet without sin." (Heb 4:15...

The Oldest Known Bible Translated into English

I agree on the KJV and I use the 1828 Webster's to understand some wordings. One thing I found of interest lately is where the KJV went to a Dynamic Equivalence approach on arsenokoites in 1 Cor. 6:9 and 1 Tim. 1:10 and the wording if followed in the RV and ASV, which when you study the KJV...

The Oldest Known Bible Translated into English

Yes, those are excellent links. I find the Archive web site very helpful with old out of print books as well.

The Oldest Known Bible Translated into English

For years I've heard and read references to the Dead Sea Scrolls and how they helped with modern translations. Recently I found there is a Dead Sea Bible in English. Three scholars put together much of the OT, that which they have scrolls for, and organized it into a readable Bible. It...

Chastisement and our Mystical Union with Christ

Heb 12:3-7 KJV For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son...

What Verse is the Most Important Concerning Abortion and Civil Law

I understand, Papa. I'll remain silent, maybe for a good while as I deal with another matter. :vgood:

    Religious Delusions?

Just because things are done in biblical times, unless we are given scriptural reason to believe it is to be continued in us, I'll avoid such things. I see the following as a guide where it is apparently Paul who shunned the boast of special treatment from God. "It may do no good, but I must...

    Religious Delusions?

Mark, did you hear an audible voice of God, or did figs seem to come into your mind for some reason not well understood. I was going through a very difficult period in life covering many months, and in exasperation in prayer before sleep, I just complained to the Lord, "I've done all I know...

What Verse is the Most Important Concerning Abortion and Civil Law

Papa, first, I like your Signature. :) You are right, you need the entire context with the added verses to decide which view you are going to take on the passage as it concerns when an individual person begins to exist. I was pointing out the change in the translation of v22 especially. To...

    Religious Delusions?

When I hear or read, "The Lord told me...." or, "I was led by the Lord to...." I toss it into the rubbish bin. That is delusional and I'd be truly scammed to believe it without proof; proof such raising the dead or some such. The Apostles themselves gave miracles as proof of their messages...

    ALL humans are equal!

As some have pointed out here, it is dangerous to go extreme, and become unbalanced with egalitarianism. Men are created equal in a matter of justice, but not equal in all ways. People are born with different inherited positives or negatives, some even born with a birth defect. It seems...

Attributes of God and Related Issues 2

God's will of decree includes his election(predestination) of persons for salvation "and all who dwell on earth will worship it, every one whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain." (Rev 13:8 RSV) "When the Gentiles heard...

Attributes of God and Related Issues 1

The attributes of God and statements about Jesus Christ in the NT The communicable attributes of God are those which man can possess to a finite degree, love, justice, etc. The incommuicable attributes are those only God Almighty can possess. Some incommunicable attributes of Almighty God are...

    The Attributes of God 1

This is my guide on the balance involved - "The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law." (Deut 29:29 KJV)
