It is not that they alone "lacked", but what all lacked-- which is Christ and salvation that was attained for all who believe (whether in His coming before or after) at the cross.

Unlike the times and the timeline kept by men and this world, the things of God (including salvation) are "the same yesterday, today, and forever." In other words, all who are "in Christ" before and after the cross, "were" crucified with Him, and therefore saved.
