    The death penalty...

I would agree with you, if I thought that God excuses us without penalty for our sins. But He doesn't. Instead He insists that we repent and atone, and these are difficult, as anyone who has done them will attest. Best wishes, 2RM.

    The death penalty...

I won't be shocked. Indeed I look forward to meeting you there, if I make it past St Peter. Best wishes, 2RM.

    The death penalty...

Would you still be for it if you were accused and found guilty of a murder you did not commit?

    The death penalty...

It just occurs to me to note that those in favour of capital punishment seem to quote the Old Testament to justify their views on this topic; I am unashamedly New Testament in outlook. Best wishes, 2RM

    The death penalty...

You don't think we should, as God does, forgive, then?

    The death penalty...

Indeed so. But what is execution but state sanctioned murder? Seems to me that Jesus called on us all, like God, to forgive trespasses against us. Or anyone else. Best wishes, 2RM.

    The death penalty...

Thanks for that, ReChoired. I have a different perspective, though. God knows the sins to which we are prone, and forgives them. However, to receive His grace, we must repent, atone and forgive ourselves. (No easy process, as many will testify). There is nothing in my philosophy that requires...

    The death penalty...

In what way, a disaster? Best wishes, 2RM.

    The death penalty...

It may be different in the US, but in the UK I genuinely believe that most of our MPs have stood for election because they want to make a positive impact on the nation. I may not agree with all of them about politics, but I approve of their motivation. And most of them would make more money in...

    The death penalty...

I agree. And if you get flak, let me know. My shoulders are broad enough to shield us both. Best wishes, 2RM.

    The death penalty...

On the contrary, what you think matters a great deal, and, so far as I can make out, scripture is ambiguous. Check out Leviticus if you have any doubt on the matter. Best wishes, 2RM.

    The death penalty...

...a cruel and unusual punishment? The late Archbishop Tutu once said 'An eye for an eye? A tooth for a tooth? Pretty soon, the world will be blind and toothless.' Jesus once said 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.' So I wonder what you all make of capital punishment? Best...

Pedophiles - it's not their fault

I think you should leave judgement and punishment to those qualified in this life, and to God in the next. Best wishes, 2RM.

Pedophiles - it's not their fault

Just to note that many paedophiles were themselves abused as children. It might be appropriate to hate the sin, but love the sinner, and do what we can to restore them to a wholesome way of being. Best wishes, 2RM.

Is all of ethics fundamentally utilitarian?

So, we have deontology, grounded in the idea of a duty to keep rules (often owed to God). We have situation ethics, grounded in the idea of different responses, depending on the situation. We have virtue ethics, grounded in the idea of developing and expressing good character. And we have...

    Environmental Rights (and Wrongs)

So, then, to supplement God's laws, what rights would you assign to the environment? Best wishes, 2RM.

    Environmental Rights (and Wrongs)

Thanks for those verses. What, then, do you think God makes of carbon emissions? Are climate change and global warming His judgment upon us? Best wishes, 2RM.

    Environmental Rights (and Wrongs)

I would agree with this. Hence my question in the OP. Should we assign such rights, or has God already assigned them, for us to discover? Best wishes, 2RM.

    Environmental Rights (and Wrongs)

You are quite right to notice that humanity is fast approaching (or has already reached and exceeded) the ecological carrying capacity of Spaceship Earth. I would just like to enter a plea for human faeces and urine (humanure), however. They are both biodegradable, and (after processing) would...

    Environmental Rights (and Wrongs)

Why do we care? That's a humdinger of a question! I guess the proximate cause of our caring is evolution. We evolved to care, firstly for our family, then for our tribe, and then by extension of empathy and sympathy, for all of humanity, and other species. In other words, caring is our default...
