I think he's referring to the modern concept of hell. If that's the case he is correct. There are three different Greek words that were translated hell, Gehenna, Hades, and Tartarus. This causes much confusion.

I agree, it is a parable. What many miss is that Jesus was talking to the Pharisees, not his disciples.The Scriptures say that He didn't speak to them except in parables. There is a point to His story, He is condemning them but they don't see it.

I think Paul's point with that passage is stressing unity. They all have the same Lord, same baptism, etc.
