I have tried to find The Institutes in modern English, so that a reader doesn't first have to translate what Calvin might be saying into something understandable. But all I can find is Book First. I suspect it would be much clearer if it had not first been translated into French from the Latin...

In truth, one of the most arrogantly frightening — even "disgusting" — books you will ever read is John Calvin's Institutes of The Christian Religion. He has some good points in it, but his attitude is strikingly appalling.
