Romans 8 contains a lot that is relevant to this.

As a believer in the Rapture, I would see 'a while' as referring to time between now and the Rapture (1 Thess. 4); the believer's tribulation (John 16.33) and suffering is not to be ended by some meritorious, ecstatic state of tranquility that I can supposedly earn.

But this does not teach sinless perfection; and the Lord Jesus Himself indicated in Luke that the Christian life involves taking up one's cross daily.

Friend, do you really mean that the Christian life is supposedly one of constant sinlessness and tranquility? I don't in any case see any Biblical evidence for this.

Resurrection bodies are changed ones.

There is always a spiritual conflict in the true believer. Romans 8 and Ephesians 6 make this clear.

I guess this is one way of putting it; another way of stating it might be that they would do so confidently and un-self-consciously. (Which I guess is obliquely what @Pearl recalls from decades back.) I think it's worthwhile stating that the smoking taboos of today didn't really apply generally...

You're absolutely right; in home and office women would just whip out their latest pack and light up, wouldn't they. It was so normal, that you wouldn't even be actively aware that it was happening.

I really don't see John 6 as being about the Lord's Supper at all.
