The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

John Macarthur is no joke. Definitely not "off the wall". I don't agree with some of his teaching but most I do. Earlier in this discussion I did argue my point based on scripture and history. Knowing the history of Corinth is important in understanding Paul's letter. The gifts are for teaching...

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

I'm a bit troubled by this. If Gods word cant mislead why are there so many denominations? Its not misleading if you understand. Understanding completely is almost impossible on your own. We need opinions, facts, history and a lot of study. It is hard on your own even with Gods help. So in...

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

I think there are two definitions of tongues talked about in the Bible. One happened at Pentecost and was for teaching the unbeliever and showing a sign of Gods power. The other as explained by Paul is simply diverse languages. The use of tongues today is not the same as either one. People feel...

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

Yes I do. You just misunderstand the scripture. Act 2:3 And there appeared unto them "cloven tongues" like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Heavenly tongues. 1Co 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles...

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

You are right, none of what Paul said matches what people call tongues today. I don't know how to make it clearer. You just said what I did but you think I'm misinterpreting. I'll break it down. Here is what you just said. You are misinterpreting Paul trying to make tongues a human language he...

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

Paul doesn't say its a heavenly language. Picture a guy that only speaks Spanish among a group that speaks only English. No man understands him, only God can. He speaks in the Spirit, referring to his spirit. They are mysteries to the English because they cant understand. Thus the need for an...

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

Where does it say this? Where does Paul say its a heavenly language? Looks like you're adding a word that isn't there.

Define Spirit in 1Corinthians14:2 1 Corinthians 14:2 New King James Version (NKJV) 2 For he who A)' data-cr="#cen-NKJV-28681A">speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

Yes it does. I gave you the Strong's meaning of tongues. The Bible clearly says the tongues Paul talks about are diverse languages. Understanding what went on in Corinth confirms it.

At Pentecost yes. At Corinth its about speaking languages.

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

Paul talks about diverse tongues. Only God can understand the language unless there is an interpreter. Paul doesn't say "heavenly" language.

No I'm not. KJV Translation Count — Total: 50x The KJV translates Strong's G1100 in the following manner: tongue (50x). Outline of Biblical Usage [?] the tongue, a member of the body, an organ of speech a tongue the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of...

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

The City of Corinth was a huge hub for many different people. There were many different nationalities there and Paul was trying to keep confusion out of the Church. If you understand what was going on in Corinth you can understand why Paul said what he did.

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

Yup, I agree. Tongues is languages. Tongues at Pentecost was not the same as described in Corinthians but many think its the same. That's where todays gibberish comes from, misunderstanding. And satan loves to use it.

The Gift of Tongues: its General Availability, Purpose, and Power

Yes God understands all languages. “For the person who speaks in another language [tongue] is not speaking to men but to God, since no one understands him; however, he speaks mysteries in the Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 14:2) The Spirit referred to is our Spirit. If you speak a language not known in...
