Unfortunately the truth doesn't hurt the dead. They only fear it when it means something is taken away from them, and they are likely to be all the more callus when their short time is close to running out.

It does when the dead one was immediately saved for Hades. While we yet live, we are not safe from God's spirit or other mankinds. But the evil can exist without him, and but the good things can't exist without him.

This is a taboo topic. I've seen Christians tie themselves in epistemological pretzels trying to rationalize their greatest fear. Hebrews 10:31 is a parallel verse: It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Also, is Jesus telling us not to fear the one who can destroy your body but to fear God who can destroy your body and soul. Because he could!

This undermines the claim by the overly spiritualized that God is love. He's also the LORD of Heaven's Armies, bring calamity and throw people into the Lake of Fire.

But I don’t think anyone can take a verse and explain it without context....so here it is...

The chapter starts off by giving us the setting....

“Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers. . . .Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction.”

So this is about the return of Christ and the gathering of his elect....but it was not going to be without problems....the devil would try to sabotage this event through his minions....a rebellion or apostasy was going to get in the way.

“And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time.. . . .For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work.”

Back there in the first century, this apostasy was “already at work”.....meaning that it was already in evidence way back then, so it’s a not new rebellion...it’s an old one.....continuing to this day! But back in the first century something, or someone, was restraining it. Who or what would that be? Who was holding it back?

“Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.”

Who were charged with keeping things going in Christ’s absence? Who needed to be “out of the way”?
It could only be the apostles....

“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.”

So after the apostles left the earthly scene, the restraint was gone, and the rebellion spread out and continued to flood the world.
It comes to a head when Christ returns....and it is Jesus who will “kill” this rebellion....bringing it to an end.

“The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.”

Satan is at the back of this rebellion and he used “the church” that he had corrupted to do it. This is the enemy within. (2 Peter2:1-3; 2 Tim 4:1-3) He has used all manner of trickery, imitating the miracles that Jesus and his apostles performed, but these “false signs and wonders” will only work on those who do not know the true God or his Son. They have no love for the truth because they love the lies, that this church system has fed them, and do not want to part with them.

What is God’s response?

“Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

The things that they love are the things that God hates....so he allows them the delusion that they prefer because they have no appreciation for the truth....they take pleasure in what God finds unacceptable.

It will not end well for those who love what God hates. (Psalm 97:10; Rom 12:9)

That is how I would explain this verse in context....

We can correctly answer that question if only we compare scripture with scripture.

Here are the appearances, verse by verse, of the word "truth." Even a cursory read is profitable.

Just like there are different beasts in Revelation, that all follow each other, so there is a delusion that all those beasts serve, from differing angles.

Just like saying "when does slavery to sin run out?" when it never runs out, or you confess, or its too late to do anything about.

There is no best way to serve evil.

Truth in general. These people are already perishing (sinners) and reject Gospel truth that WOULD HAVE saved them.

It's popping up often because we are close to that time. The Antichrist will soon be revealed after the Restrainer of Evil ( Holy Spirit) releases the power of evil to do its work and the Church which is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, is taken out of the way. It is likely we will go through some Tribulation though imo.
