From my X / Twitter “For you” feed this morning -

“I just finished my 55th time reading through the Bible in 13 years.

Here are 55 lessons I have learned in no specific order

What is your favorite?”

(Travis Maxey)

That’s remarkable.

The pastor is an absolute reading machine. You don’t have to be. Read the Bible regularly and you’ll be doing well.

We can’t memorize it, fill our minds with it, know it, without regularly spending time reading and studying it.

Reading the Bible is never a solo activity. Have you ever thought of it that way before?

“It is better to be without bread in your houses than without Bibles, for the words of God’s mouth are and should be to you more than your necessary food. But what will it avail you to have Bibles in your houses, if you do not use them - to have the great things of God’s law and gospel written to you, if you count them as a strange thing? You have great encouragements to read the Scriptures; for notwithstanding the malicious endeavors of atheists to vilify sacred things, the knowledge of the Scriptures is still in reputation with all wise and good men. You have also a variety of excellent help to understand the Scriptures, and to improve your reading of it; so that if you or yours perish for lack of this knowledge, as you certainly will if you persist in the neglect of it, the guilt will lie at your own doors.”

(Matthew Henry, “How to be a Godly Father”)

How into it am I? How into me is it? Everyone must answer those questions for themselves.

I hope you, the reader, are able to answer them well today.

But if you aren’t able, today is an opportunity for you to get on that track.

Once on, don’t step off. If you were once on but have stepped off, I encourage you to step back on today.

From my X / Twitter “For you” feed this morning -

“A happy motive to read the Bible.

’Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise … for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you.’ Proverbs 22:17-18”

(John Piper)

Are you happily motivated to read the Bible today?

Don’t just feel the need. We need the read.

Alone or together, let’s read.

“Studying the Bible is non-negotiable. Don’t rely on movies, devotional books, or popular ‘Christian’ song lyrics to tell you who Jesus is. Read the Bible dialy, even if you’re tired, bored or busy.” - Doreen Virtue

If you haven’t already, why not make daily Bible reading non-negotiable in your life?

This is the Lincoln Family Bible. It is kept on display at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Historical Park in Hodgenville, Kentucky. I visited the Park last week and spent a long time peering at it through the glass enclosure case.

Looking at a Bible owned by a famous person can spark a desire to read the scriptures. May it spark that desire in the hearts of those who come across this post.

What is preventing you from applying The Rule of 100 to the discipline of reading the Bible and reaping what you sow?

“We already discussed how to select a good Bible, but what is the worst Bible version of all? Is it one that you personally own? Maybe. Is it a literal, dynamic, or paraphrased translation? Maybe. The worst Bible of all is …”

(B.J. Oropeza)

Before I reveal the answer, do you know where your Bible is? If you don’t, find it and see which translation you own.

The worst translation of all is …

“… the Bible that is never read!”

If you happen to own the worst Bible translation of all, get rid of it. It’s doing you no good unread. Either blow the dust off the cover and read it regularly or consider giving it to someone who doesn’t have a Bible and will read it.

Make a plan.

P.S.

It’s approaching that time of year when I decide which reading plan I want to use next year. I have something new in mind, something that I’ve never done before. If I settle on it, I’ll share it with you before the end of the year.

Don’t wait to the last minute to think about using a Bible reading plan. Why not start thinking about it today?

* The best way to thank and honor them is to do what they gave their lives for. *
