Spurgeon in the wrong
KJV"As it began to dawn, came Magdalene, to see the sepulchre." Matthew 28:1KJV
Refer: \‘John 20:1,2 “early of night” or ‘early of morning’?’ ISBN 978-0-620-72079-3 July 2016/

CHS“Let us learn from Mary Magdalene… If thou canst wait for Christ, and be patient in the hope of having fellowship with him.., thou wilt never have fellowship at all; for the heart that is fitted for communion is a hungering and a thirsting heart.”CHS
So true, but it is not what Matthew 28:1 is about.
There is nothing to learn from Mary in Matthew’s anecdote of the events of the day that Jesus rose from the dead; rather to unlearn, such as Mary’s unbelief and impatience due to having given up the hope of ever having communion with her Saviour again.

CS“She (Mary Magdalene) sought him (the Lord Jesus) also with very great boldness. Other disciples fled from the sepulchre, for they trembled and were amazed; but Mary, it is said, "stood" at the sepulchre.”CS
Luke, also Mark and Matthew—quite meaningful, considering John recorded several women at Jesus’ death but no women at his burial, have this to say about those present at the successive scenes…,

Women At the Cross Before and Until Jesus had Died:
Luke 23:
“27And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. 28But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. 30Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
John 19: 25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple (John) standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.”

Men At the Cross Before and Until Jesus had Died:
John 19:
“16 Then delivered he (Pilate) Him unto them (the chief priests) to be crucified. And they (the soldiers) took Jesus, and led Him away. 17And he (Simon the Cyrene) bearing his (Jesus’) cross went forth 18 they (the soldiers) crucified him, and two other with Him 19Pilate wrote a title, and (had it) put it on the cross (by the soldiers). 20This title then read many of the Jews: 21the chief priests of the Jews 26the disciple (John) standing by”
Mark 15: “21 they (soldiers), Simon a Cyrenian 23they (soldiers who) gave him to drink 27two thieves; 29they that passed by 31also the priests, scribes
Matthew 27: “32 (soldiers) came out, man of Cyrene, Simon 34They (soldiers who) gave him to drink 35And they (who) crucified him 36and sitting down watched him 37and (they Pilate and Jews that) set up his accusation 38two thieves 39and they that passed by 41the chief priests, scribes and elders
Luke 23: “26 they (soldiers), Simon a Cyrenian 27a great company of people, 32also two other malefactors 35 the people (that) stood beholding and the rulers also with them deriding

Women At the Cross AFTER Jesus had Died:
John 19:
(John does not mention any women.) “28After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
Matthew 27: “55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him, 56among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.”
Luke 23: “48 And all the people that came together to that sight, after having seen and witnessed the things which were done, 49as indeed all his acquaintance and the women that followed him from Galilee, and stood afar off beholding these things, smote their breasts and returned (home).”
Mark 15: “40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; 41(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.”

4.
Men At the Cross AFTER Jesus had Died:
John 19:
(John does not mention any men.) “28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
Matthew 27: “51 the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52And the graves were opened… 54Now when the centurion saw the earthquake he feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
Mark 15: “33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice… 35And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias. 36And one ran and gave him to drink… 37And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. 38And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. 39And when the centurion who stood over against Him, saw that Jesus so cried out and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.”
Luke 23: 44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth… 45 and the sun was darkened…until the ninth hour. And the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, He gave up the ghost. 47Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. 48And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, returned, smiting their chests (for breath), fleeing.”

Men on Day of BURIAL until after the Grave had been closed:
“He Shall Not Hang All-That-Night”:
John 19:
31 It (sunset) having become the Preparation Day the Jews therefore besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath, that they might be taken away, because That Day was a great-day of (a sabbath).”
John 19:38a And after this (request of the Jews), Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he (Joseph), might take away the body of Jesus:
Mark 15: “42 Now evening and the Preparation which is the day before the Sabbath already begun (“the Sixth Day” Friday beginning Thursday after sundown), 43c Joseph craved the body of Jesus,
Matthew 27: “57 When the even was come, there came Joseph: 58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
Luke 23:50 And, behold, there was / came a man named Joseph 52This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
IN THE MEANTIME…
John 19:
32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35And he that saw it bare record (centurion Mk.15:45), and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. 37And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.”

6.
IN THE MEANTIME…
Mark 15:
“43b Pilate asked 44the centurion 45and when he knew it of the centurion (John 19:35), granted (Joseph) the body.
John 19:38b Pilate gave him (Joseph) leave.
Mark 15: “46a Then he (Pilate for Joseph “after this” John 19:38) had (Jesus’ body) taken down and (Joseph “At That Selfsame Night” John 19:39) wrapped him in the linen…
Matthew 27: 57b Pilate commanded the body to be delivered (to Joseph).
Night of Burial-Preparations Before the Day at the Grave:
John 19:
38c He (Joseph) came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
Luke 23: “53 And he (Joseph) laid it (the body of Jesus) prostrate, and wrapped the body in linen,
Matthew 27: 59 And when Joseph had received the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.
John19: “39 Then came there also Nicodemus who ‘At The First Night’ came / went to him (Joseph), bringing / carrying a mixture of myrrh and aloes about an hundred pound weight. 40Then took they (Joseph and Nicodemus) the body of Jesus and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

7.
“That Day” They Buried Him In the Grave:
John:
41 Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden, a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. 42There, therefore, they (Joseph and Nicodemus, daylight on That Selfsame Day) laid/prostrated Jesus because of the Jews' Preparation Day; for the sepulchre was prepared for it.”
Mark 15: “46b and they (daylight on That Selfsame Day) laid/prostrated Him in a sepulchre.”
Matt. 27: “60 and they (daylight on That Selfsame Day) laid/prostrated it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.”
Luke 23: “53 and they (daylight on That Selfsame Day) laid/prostrated it in a sepulchre 54And That Day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew on.
The Two Women Who Came to the Burial Until it was over:
Luke 23:
“55 Then the women who had come (Κατακολουθήσασαι δὲ αἱ γυναῖκες) with Him from Galilee (Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses), followed after (in the procession, the two men leading), and beheld the sepulchre, and how, his body was laid.
Matthew 27: “61 And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sitting over against, the sepulchre.”
Mark 15: “47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where, he was laid.”
Two Women at the Grave When it was closed:
Luke 23:
“56a And they (Mary Magdalene and the other Mary the mother of Joses)
returned home, and prepared spices and ointments
Two Women after “the Preparation” was over:
Luke 23:
“56b Then rested they (“who came with him from Galilee…and beheld the sepulchre and how his body was laid…) the Sabbath Day according to the (Fourth) Commandment].”

8.
NO Women, NO Man, “the next day that followed”:
Matthew 27:
“62 Now the next day, that followed the Day of the Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, 63Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. 64Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. 65Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. 66So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch, 28:1however, in the end of the Sabbath, late, as it began to dawn toward the First Day of the week and Mary Magdalene and the other Mary set out to see the sepulchre, 2behold, there was a great earthquake! For the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and cast back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: 4And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men, 5answered and explained the angel.

Three Women “after the Sabbath was over”:
Mark 16:
“1 And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome, bought sweet spices so that they might come and anoint Him.”
