Can a Christian be a professional soldier?

Yes, according to John the Baptizer, Luke 3:

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
John didn't tell them to quit their jobs.

God uses his army, Matthew 22:

7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
Some centurions in the NT became Christians and I don't think they quit their day jobs.

If it bothers your conscience to be a soldier, you may want to quit.

As things deteriorate in my own country, it is less desirable to join the professional ranks of the military defense. It is an obligation to defend family and the country. But at some point one cannot defend the corruption. As you said, it's a matter of personal conscience.
