Christian Clothing Restrictions

Alright I need help to settle a small war of words with a fellow christian friend of mine I speak with on MSN. To see what point of view all of you have. He claims that if your a Christian you should go by certain rules of clothing (Mostly A Woman should only wear skirts or dresses, never pants.) Now I think that Woman are equal to man in many ways, mostly because I've spent most of my life around girls (Mother, sister's, niece's, etc.) and I find that it makes no difference if a Woman wears pants or even a mans T-shirt if she so chooses (as long as it covers up most of their body) in the eyes of the lord. I try to make that point across, but he is stubborn. Plus doesn't help he's older then me by three years and was on the debate team in high school, while I spent my time writing fictional stories. So I wouldn't mind some feedback here, I'm not looking to see who's right or wrong. Just to see what all of your point of views on the subject is. Anyway take care and God Bless

I did and his response was this: "A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God" Deuteronomy 22:5, "Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material." Leviticus 19:19. So he thinks that according to those two verses that there is some kind of "Dress Code" if your a Christian. Such as don't wear something that looks like it promotes the devil or something, or something like that. I don't even understand the guy anymore.

During those days, men did not wear pants. Pants did not exist during biblical times.

Good point Selene. The last time I watched a Biblical movie I never saw anyone in slacks, not even the Romans.

But there's nothing wrong with women wearing trousers anyway even if you consider them mens clothing because women's trousers are cut differently, they are not men's trousers, they are made for women so they are not the garb of a man.

I think the focus is a little more obvious; although our culture doesn't like the politically incorrect. Deuteronomy 22:5 says simply that men and women should not take the roles of the other sex. This is often outwardly manifested by wearing the clothes of the other sex.

As far as statutes, that word makes an important distinction for us. If you look at the surrounding verses in context, you can see that the name of the game was purity. This is to be symbolic of the inner self when approaching God. Have your friend recall that at this time, the only King was God. I think a lot of people - seeking to do the right thing in an absolute-literalism view - don't see that there are many references in the law to things dealing with other religions (shaving of beards, tattoos, etc.) that are a little more than God simply saying no to something.

In all probability women wore pants before men did due to the nature of their work to cover themselves up stooping bending.......

Now as for he statement where it says that a woman should not wear men's clothes and a man should not wear a woman's clothes there is a logical explination.


You have to look no further than the homosexual community. When you see a lesbian dressed as a man or these men dressed in drag...... you got the picture of what this is referring to.

My wife wears slacks a great amount of the time. If I were to try to wear her slacks if they would fit and one of her tops to go along with it then I would be in violation of this law.

A woman that wears jeans that fit properly and presents herself in a way that she is a woman instead of a man is not in violation of this law.

This is just one more place here God is telling you that the mess we see in the US are saying is ok is not ok.

I did have a friend that found a tract on the storage room of the Church that he was the pastor of. This tract was apparently from the 1950's. It basically attributed all of the problems we have and see in society to those "Pants wearing women."

This is Old Covenant teaching and I for one do not live under the Old Covenant, I live under the New. It is not acceptable to try and live under the old and the new, which is what he is doing. Jesus did away with the old and brought in a new covenant. The only thing from the old that is relevant for living is the 10 commandments. They are applicable for all time as "Jesus said if you love me, you will keep my commandments.

This is a cultural interpretation of what the scriptures teach. Most of the time we wear what we wear because we are rebelling against God and his word. The NT is full of instructions how we are to live, treat each other and how we should dress. The leadership should give teaching on this subject...from the scriptures, not from culture. If you care to do a study of this topic in the original Greek and investigate the context, you will know what is acceptable.

The big mistake is to try and make the scripture support your view. Your view must be supported by scripture. Unfortunately, we are not really interested what the scripture says as we want to wear what we want to wear, so we are not open to the truth and as has been said Ïf you don't want to know the truth, God won't show you what it is.

The way to settle this "war of words" is to "avoid godless chatter" (1 Timothy 6:20)... just let it go. If your friend wants to believe that, then that is his convictions... by arguing that it's okay for women to wear pants only destructs both of your faith.

I think sometimes we get so caught up in frivilous arguments that we miss the fact that we could be using our time to focus on things we agree on.

According to Pauls words women need only wear neat modest well arranged attire ... so long as its modest, then her personal choice and preferences as to the style of that attire is between herself and God. Thats what I'd tell him.

Here you are looking at this toward the woman in the fashion of His words being sort of a "one-way street"


For that woman to have clothing that reveals too much is pretty obvious --- but clothing that is too tight, showing her form, femininity is also called into question. We are not to cause our brother or sister to stumble in making their eyes follow after you in a way liable to incite lust or impure thoughts.

Other side of it would be a man in muscle shirts or showing off his six pack abs ....

Religusnut is right about this issue - the verse is about restrictions on dressing in drag. On the scale of 1 to 10 of major spiritual issues - 1 being a minor issue and 10 being critical - this is a 1.

On a side note, I am totally in favor of school uniforms for all children and adolescents. We spend millions of dollars on the latest styles for our kids to dress up (actually to dress down - they show more flesh every year) only to our societies' determent - intercity gang expression right do to mean, economic class division.


I sure wish the Bible mentioned the evil of sexualizing and profiting off our children just to fuel the marketplace.

Now, you personally may feel this way --- this thought is not scriptural.

A church I went to had an issue with a number of women wearing very low cut tops and/or very short skirts.

There is no dress code at our church - everything from shorts and blue jeans to suits and ties.

The pastor's wife mentioned concerns to a number of them privately and was surprising greated with statements that it is as if she is expecting that women at the church were to wear burqas because they can't dress how they feel.

She put a message in the church bulletin stating that while women may have the purest of intentions in what they wear, if it causes men to struggle with not looking due to tempting attire, that should be a consideration when wearing something to church. She suggesting nothing more revealing than what you would wear to a job interview.

This was met by more outrage from some of these women and so she finally told a number of them that she wasn't stupid and that women know exactly what they look like when they go out the door and know exactly what men want to see and sometimes struggle with.

Some changed their practices and some left.
