Hi Wayne!

I agree...the bible says in Romans 12
[sup]14[/sup] Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. [sup]15[/sup] Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

The idea of cussing [swearing] in the bible holds a different meaning today than it did in biblical times...it had more to do with making an oath.

Bless you!

My thing is that the Bible does talk often about what proceeds out of the heart and I think if you are constantly cussing/cursing someone out, using foul language in front of the little ones, and so on that it's not consistent with Christly behavior. We don't have free license to get into some of the more nasty/gross terms and call people names like that.

However, I don't think because someone drops and s-bomb or a d-bomb when they hit their finger or something similar that it's a major sin in front of God like some legalists/moralists make it out to be. In fact, the Apostle Paul used the Greek equivalent of our modern s-word when writing about religion. Usually that ticks (I didn't use the p-word) the religious establishment off - we've tried to soften it to rubbish or trash, but the word is the coarse Greek way of saying crap:

Philippians 3:8 NLT
Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ

The bold word in the Greek is skubala which is rendered garbage here in the NLT, rubbish in most translations, and the KJV comes in with the closest literal translation with the word dung. It literally is the past tense of crap. Most commentaries mention the vulgarity of the word and then quickly move on. Yes, Paul said s**t.

Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Ephesians 4:29

there are other verses which, in very general terms, tell us how we should and should not use our speech

This verse shows that using our speech in a worthless way is actually a sin in Gods eyes:
Ephesians 4:26, 29, 30 "Be wrathful, and yet do not sin...29 Let a rotten saying not proceed out of YOUR mouth, but whatever saying is good for building up as the need may be, that it may impart what is favorable to the hearers. 30 Also, do not be grieving God’s holy spirit

Psalm 39:1 I said: “I will guard my ways To keep from sinning with my tongue. I will set a muzzle as a guard to my own mouth, As long as anyone wicked is in front of me.”

Proverbs 12:13 By the transgression of the lips the bad person is ensnared, but the righteous one gets out of distress.

When you curse you are speaking a curse into existance. That simple sentence and the sanctifiying help of the Holy Spirit keep me from cursing.

What people should realize is the words God hates more than anything else are those that aren't the truth. I don't see anything wrong with cussing however. At least not like most Christians view them.... Let me put it this way, God used some pretty harsh words himself in the Bible himself! Some examples? Sure!

What did Paul count his education as? Dung. That's not the "S" word, but lets face it, the meaning is still there.

Jesus told one woman, "I'm not going to give the children's bread to dogs". He told a woman that, and do you know what a female dog is called? Yep, the "B" word. It was a pretty rude thing to say, yet Jesus had his reasoning. Being called or likened to a dog was an insult. She got the blessing, of course, because of her steadfastness.

There are other examples.... However, I kind of agree with Aspen on this. I don't use profanity much. Usually its used when one becomes angry, and you loose your levelheadedness. It seems pointless to me.... I will utter some of them "bad words" from time to time, but only when its to make a point. Overall, though.... I tend to not use such language. It puts everyone in a different mood that usually isn't good.

I started a topic on this a while back. Same thing different idea.

To this day I still have a problem cussing. I do alot of it. Each time I get a little sickly guilt feeling. More and more it's brought to my attention, and specifically here the past few days. At this moment I'm aware for the most part if I'm about to cuss and have been getting better at catching it before it comes out of my mouth.

Not only has God shown me, it also helps, I work in a place that will fire you for cussing, and the place where I train doesn't allow cussing. Good things to help for the time being until I'm stronger.

IMHO, cussing is wrong, sinful probably not, good no. Although, I don't believe there is anything that relieves the stress of a deadblow with a hammer to your thumb than a chorus of carelessly painted mouth porn.

Matthew 15:11 "What goes into a mans mouth does not make him unclean, but what comes out of his mouth that is what makes him unclean"

Again like in your other thread this condition of being unclean comes up.
