Christ died on Friday in the afternoon and then resurrected approximately 39 hours later. People get hung up on this because of the math. It is not about the math. People get so hung up on this that they want to push everything back and that throws off the whole sequence of events.
For one the Jewish day was from dusk to dusk, that would even cause more problems.
Christ was crucified on Friday...the Day of Preparation. Just a few hours before Passover started...at dusk. They had to remove His body before dusk for that very reason. The day of Preparation was the day before Passover....as in Passover started at dusk---and continued through Saturday. The full moon marks this date...Passover starts at dusk and then the full moon rises. This is how Passover is calculated by the Jews.
Moving this from this date throws everything off. Passover does not always occur on Saturday---the Jewish Sabbath. It is well documented that Christ's Crucifixion occurs over the duel holiday, Passover - Sabbath holiday.
Matthew 12:40
for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
The above verse, spoken by Jesus himself, is why I am hung up on "the math."
Mark 8:31
And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and
after three days rise again.
Mark 9:31
For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise
three days later.”
John 2:19
Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and
in three days I will raise it up.”
1Corinthians 15:3-4
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised
on the third day according to the Scriptures,
How long is a day?
John 11:9
Jesus answered, “Are there not
twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
When does the day start?
Morning
Matthew 20:1
For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out
early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
When does the day end?
Evening
Matthew 20:8
When evening came, the owner of the vineyard *said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last
group to the first.’
When was Jesus buried?
Evening
Matthew 27:57-58
57
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given
to him.
Jesus was NOT buried in the day time; he was buried in the evening. In no way can we count that day as a partial day.

This doesn't add up to three days and three nights.
