Does one need to study the bible?

The Holy Spirit wrote the Bible. The Holy Spirit is not at odds with his own writing, nor does He need to supernaturally illumine someone to understand what He has written in the Scriptures, otherwise "inspiration" is meaningless. Why would inspiration mean anything if no one can learn anything from the Bible without some kind of special illumination where the Holy Spirit drops truth supernaturally down in your head? Scripture says plainly that the Scriptures are useful for "teaching" , correcting, rebuking, and training in all godliness. It does not say that Scripture is useful for teaching...only if you have the Holy Spirit specially illuminating you because the Bible is a inaccessible otherwise. Rather, unbelievers are challenged to hear and believe the inspired words of the Scriptures that they may find life in them.

If you don't study the Bible, how do you know what your hearing from the Holy Spirit is correct? I guess I just feel that if you walk with Christ, you will read his word, study it, and know it. There is more than just inspiration in the Bible. There are commands and teachings in it too!! You should always read the word of God if you have the time. If not, make the time!!!

1) Conveniently ignoring verse 13 of 1 Cor 2, so I'm going to quote it here for you to ponder on,

With what does Paul say that the Spirit of God reveals to us the deep things of God ?

Words ... words, that do not come from man's human wisdom but words which He the Holy Spirit sees in the depths of God.

For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Pet 1:21

And if you continue reading all the way to 2 Pet 2:21 you discover what that word was/is,

For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment
delivered to them.

What word was delivered to them by the Holy Spirit ? ... the Holy commandment ! ... The word of God, the Scriptures.

This is the "deep things" which the Holy Spirit sees in the heart, mind and will of God and then reveals to mankind.
The Holy Spirit does not set the word of God aside, when He speaks, He speaks the word of God.
To confirm this with another Scripture let's turn to Zech 7:12,

They made their hearts diamond-hard lest they should hear the law and the words that the LORD of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the
former prophets. Therefore great anger came from the LORD of hosts.

The revelation of the deep things of God which the Holy Spirit delivers are the "words of the Lord of Hosts", the same thing that 1 Cor 2:13 says.
And those words are the word of God, the Bible, the Scriptures.
You have to be incredibly spiritually blind not see this.

2) The word of God is weak and ineffectual in aiding a person to break free from sin as per your viewpoint.

I am wondering if we could make this process any more mechanical? It's ironic that a conversation involving the HS is so formulaic.....

Our relationship with God is always dynamic - we are the ones who try to make it a step by step process. It is our need to control....lassoing truth with complex structures of Law. On the other hand, throwing out truth by mistaking it for Law is going in the opposite direction.

Here is what helps me separate truth from Law - truth needs no defense. If it is not truth, it will whither on the vine....be threshed from the wheat and fall away like chaff. So in application - the Bible is truth, as is the HS - the order in which we encounter these truths is arbitrary; as arbitrary as assigning chapter and verse to the scriptures or claiming that a certain translation is more divinely inspired than all the rest - worrying about that or defending it is a waste of time.

The boredom generated from following all the human rules or even spending time musing over them will hopefully cause unavoidable sleep; beats getting burned

Honestly, it Is one of the main reasons I stay away from Catholic chatrooms - I could careless about the order of the Mass or which colors belong to which seasons - and I certainly do not want to spend even a minute debating subjects like that.....and unfortunately, I have run into entire subcategories on Catholic sites devoted to procedure - which is certainly not the reason I became Catholic.

This is different from a person who is living a godly life and slips up from time to time.

That's why John says in 1 John 1:9 and 1 John 2:1 that when we sin ... not if we sin, but when we sin, that we can ask God to forgive us and
He will.

John wrote his letter to believers not unbelievers, so he was acknowledging that Christians do sin.
Remember Jesus said that you will know them by their fruit (Matt 7:16), that is, you will know them by the behaviour that you constantly see
manifest in their lives ... not a one time done deal.
Ok so I sinned once so I am of the devil ... no, it's if you constantly see bad fruit then you know that their heart is not right and they have been
taken captive by their flesh and the devil is the inspiration behind that.

The concept that a Christian never sins and is of the devil is also a direct contradiction of James 5:15 - 16 which says,

And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great
power as it is working.

Would God heal a child of the devil ?
No, He heals his children and forgives them if they have sinned.
