If you agree that a person is more than the worst thing they've ever done, and that repentance, transformation, suffering, and the state of the soul matter, then we agree with that principle.

Agreed.

We need to stay in our lane! The questions before us are: is she guilty of murder? Has the sentence been carried out? That is, has justice been done?

To talk about all this other stuff is besides the point. My 5 yo granddaughter has learned to attempt to side step justice by coming up with excuses. Just recently, her mother told her not to eat candy. 1 minute later she opened up a piece of candy. I spoke as the voice of justice in establishing the relevant facts?
  1. Did you mother tell you not to eat candy?
  2. Did you eat candy?
Simple. And loaded with gravitas, the weight of sin. Knowing I disregarded all her excuses, she cried under the weight of truth.

I think this is where I'm confused.

You agreed that a person is more than the worst thing they've ever done, and that repentance, transformation, suffering, and the state of the soul matter.

But you also said the only relevant questions are whether she is guilty and whether the sentence has been carried out.

If repentance, transformation, suffering, and the state of the soul genuinely matter, then they cannot be "besides the point." They become part of the point.

That's one reason I keep returning to the adulterous woman. If justice were simply a matter of establishing guilt and carrying out the prescribed punishment, then Christ's response would have been very straightforward:
  1. Did she commit adultery? Yes.
  2. Did the Law prescribe death? Yes.
End of discussion.

Yet Christ did not stop there.

He confronted the hearts of the accusers, exposed hypocrisy, and gave the sinner an opportunity to repent:

"Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her."

"Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more."

Christ clearly did not view guilt as the only relevant consideration. He cared about what the sinner would become, not merely what the sinner had done.

I'm not disputing Christina Pike's guilt. I'm not arguing that actions should have consequences. I'm questioning the idea that once guilt is established, everything else becomes irrelevant.

After all, if repentance, transformation, suffering, and the state of the soul matter, then the Christian discussion cannot end with "Did she do it?" Christ certainly didn't stop there.

The reason I keep bringing up repentance, restoration, and salvation is because Christ kept bringing up repentance, restoration, and salvation.

So when I look at Christina Pike, I see someone who is guilty of a terrible crime, but also someone who has endured thirty years of imprisonment and remains a human being made in the image of God. Christianity teaches us to see both realities at once.

Justice and mercy are not opposites. The Christian view of a person never ends with their worst act, and I don't think Christ's view did either.

No, it is not the same. Jesus wasn't presiding over a judicial court. He was addressing a lynch mob. The woman may have been guilty, but she was not officially found so. The woman who tortured and murdered her friend WAS found guilty and sentenced. The penalty is clear. While the death sentence is not something we enforce with glee. It is mandated by the word of God for those that shed blood. We pray for her soul and hope for her salvation but there is nothing we can do about the judgement she has already received. Personally, I would like to see her sentence commuted to life imprisonment, but many disagree. I can understand why.

I agree that the situation in John 8 was not a formal judicial proceeding and that the accusers were acting in bad faith. That's an important distinction.

But I don't think that resolves the broader point I'm making.

My argument has never been that the woman caught in adultery and Christina Pike are legally identical cases. Obviously they are not. My argument is that John 8 reveals something important about Christ's heart toward guilty sinners.

You say the woman had not been formally convicted, but Christ never challenges her guilt. He never says she is innocent. He never says adultery isn't serious. Instead, He redirects attention to the hearts of those demanding punishment, exposes their hypocrisy, and then gives the sinner an opportunity for repentance.

That remains significant because when confronted with guilt, Christ's instinct was mercy ordered toward conversion.

You appeal to Genesis 9:6 and the authority of the state. I acknowledge those passages exist. But authority and necessity are not the same as desire. Romans 13 may explain what a government is permitted to do, but John 8 shows us what Christ desires for the sinner.

In fact, I think you've unintentionally reinforced my point. You said:

"We pray for her soul and hope for her salvation."

That's exactly what I've been arguing.

If our hope is her salvation, if our desire is her repentance, and if we would personally prefer her sentence be commuted to life imprisonment, then we're already acknowledging that death is not the outcome we most desire for her.

Where we differ is that I think Christians should place greater weight on Christ's example of mercy than on the state's authority to execute.

My concern is that appeals to Genesis 9:6 tell us what justice may permit, while John 8 shows us what divine mercy prefers. As Christians, we're called not merely to acknowledge God's justice but to imitate Christ's mercy.

So my question remains: if Christ consistently preferred repentance and restoration where possible, why shouldn't that shape what Christians desire even for those who have committed terrible crimes?

Now as far as the law . well if one does murder , SURE THEY are guilty of death .
However seeing i myself could not kill them and i dont support their death but rather hope they repent and come to Christ .
LIFE N PRISON sounds good enough a sentence for them . Not the death penality .
IF they asked any one of us to pull the switch and thus end their life . NO WAY could i do it
THUS i aint gonna play the hyrprocrite and have someone else do it f or me .
WIcked as they are , still i pray they repent and at least come to Christ and have eternal life .
Now before i get lectured that they dont deserve
Gods mercy and grace ,
WELL , NO ONE DOES . and all have been g uilty of breaking Gods laws and worthy of death .

You are confused. When you say "they matter," it is not a primary but a secondary concept. These things matter to who and for what?

As a member of society, where a murder was committed and justice must be done, these secondary things you're mentioning don't matter. Why are you even bringing them up while carrying out justice is being done? Why didn't you talk about it during the 3 decades while society waited for justice to be done?

Wow! From a 'Christian'???

But you can't prove it! So why are you wanting CORRUPT courts to MURDER!

The LAW was given to Moses too. Do you execute gays, weekend workers, your family as Moses COMMANDED? Or do you just pick the parts you like?
Yes from a christian!
Proof?

Romans 13 King James Version

13 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Genesis 9:6 King James Version

6 Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

The death penalty for murder was given long before the Mosaic Law! So your last line is just a straw man!

Paul called government the minister of God- deal with it.

Sorry, but the command God gave to Moses was for mankind! Nowhere in Scripture has that law been revoked. this is how government should operate before god. Yes I would love to see them come to christ. but whether they come to jesus or not is in gods hands not ours. If they killed a person in what is called the first degree- they forfeit their life- prove that the command to Noah for all of mankind has been revoked.

I don't think Romans 13 means what many people assume it means when it's quoted by itself.
Romans 13 follows immediately after Romans 12, where Paul instructs Christians:
  • "Bless those who persecute you."
  • "Repay no one evil for evil."
  • "Never avenge yourselves."
  • "If your enemy is hungry, feed him."
  • "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
Paul is describing the Christian disposition toward others: mercy, self-sacrifice, charity, forgiveness, and the overcoming of evil through love.

Then, in Romans 13, Paul acknowledges that civil authorities exist and have a role in maintaining order in a fallen world. The text says the ruler "does not bear the sword in vain," but it does not command Christians to desire punishment, delight in punishment, or make punishment the center of justice.

In fact, the larger context points in the opposite direction. The Christian is called to conquer evil through love, not vengeance. As Romans 12 says, judgment ultimately belongs to God.
That's why I think there is an important distinction between what the state may be permitted to do and what Christians should desire in their hearts.

It emphasizes that all authority, whether religious or civil, must be guided by both justice and charity. It even warns that those in authority who act without love and mercy will themselves answer to God. Authority is not given so that the powerful can become a torment to others. It is meant to be exercised according to love, justice, and concern for souls.

That's also why I keep returning to Christ's example in John 8. When confronted with a guilty sinner facing death, Jesus did not begin with punishment. He exposed hypocrisy, called for self-examination, and opened the door to repentance:

"Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more."

To me, that reveals the heart of God more clearly than any appeal to the sword.

So when I read Romans 13, I see Paul recognizing the reality of civil authority. When I read Romans 12 and the Gospels, I see what Christians are supposed to become: people whose justice is always governed by love, whose concern extends beyond the crime to the soul of the person who committed it, and who desire repentance and restoration whenever possible.

That's why I can acknowledge the state's authority while still believing that God's deepest desire is what Scripture itself says: "I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live." Justice matters. But for Christians, justice can never be separated from mercy, because "love is the fulfillment of the law" (Romans 13:10).

LOL. Then what purpose does the sword serve if NOT punishment being the center of justice?

It’s very important for modern Christians to embrace their Biblical burden to DO justice. Micah 6:8. Justice means balance of getting what you’ve earned, getting what you deserve. All the angst and hand wringing about the disposition of Justice doesn’t change the nature of Justice and our role as Christians to advocate for justice, to act for the sake of truth, justice, freedom.

Being feminized, our society and our churches are imbalanced toward mercy and away from justice, which God loves.

YES!!! Take your meds Jack. We live in a fallen world, filled with corrupt people, which means our manmade institutions are corrupt to some extent. Doesn't excuse our burden to DO JUSTICE. What do you advocate? Instead of letting truth, justice and freedom ring, let evil and injustice go unanswered? What kind of children of God, who loves Justice is that?
