My attention is on him and his words.

Others might be interested in discussing your question. Why don’t you start a thread on it?
Why the refusal to engage me Matthias? Is it hard to kick against the pricks?

So, soul sleep then?

You are a soul. A mortal soul. Immortality is a gift.

Why do you think so many Christians reject that idea?

The influence of Greek philosophy.

You will not be waiting long. Time passes instantly when you're asleep.

The dead who belong to Jesus will wait until he returns. The dead who don’t belong to Jesus will wait an additional 1,000 years.

The dead are unaware of the passage of time.

What do you mean? You don't think it's because they don't like the idea of being dead? I ask because most Christians, people like Frank Turek, believe that it goes like this: death > instantly with Jesus.

The dead who belong to Jesus will wait until he returns. The dead who don’t belong to Jesus will wait an additional 1,000 years.
Time has no meaning when you're unconscious. 1,000 years is no different than 3 billion.

What do you mean?

I mean paganism.

You don't think it's because they don't like the idea of being dead?

Their idea of being dead is that they are still alive; only the shell / husk (the body) is dead.

I ask because most Christians, people like Frank Turek, believe that it goes like this: death > instantly with Jesus.

They are reading Paul and leaving out resurrection.

That’s right.

Do you believe there are aspects of paganism that Christians prefer?

Their idea of being dead is that they are still alive; only the shell / husk (the body) is dead.
I agree.

They are reading Paul and leaving out resurrection.
But why? Why do they want to believe their soul doesn't die?

That’s right.
And so there is no waiting. Death > instantly with Jesus. Soul sleep or no, the result is the same in terms of time. The only difference between the two beliefs is the status of the soul after bodily death.

@Riven do you think Jesus is a human person?
Not anymore.

When Jesus died, was he dead?
I believe he was.

Prefer to what?

But why? Why do they want to believe their soul doesn't die?

They believe it is the truth.

And so there is no waiting. Death > instantly with Jesus.

Paul himself is a resurrection man. Resurrection necessitates waiting.

Soul sleep or no, the result is the same in terms of time. The only difference between the two beliefs is the status of the soul after bodily death.

Humans don’t exist without bodies.

Not anymore.

Thanks. Do you think he ever was a human person?

I believe he was.

God cannot die.

To Christian ideas like soul sleep.

Then yes.

It's about perspective.

Paul’s perspective is that humans are mortal and God is immortal.

There would be no sense of waiting for the person being resurrected. Death > instantly resurrected.

Jesus wasn’t instantly resurrected. He was dead and in the grave / tomb for three days and three nights.

What if God wanted to die?

Did God ever say that he wanted to die?

God is immortal. Immortals, by definition, don’t die. Mortals, by definition, are appointed to die.

Are you saying there's something we can do that God can't?

I wasn’t, but there is.

Returning to Jesus, do you think he was ever a human person?

What you said is the right way, the right sense, the proper perspective, to read Paul. To the dead person who is resurrected, it will seem instantaneous - like a blink of an eye - when in fact it may have been thousands of years that have passed.

What you said is the wrong way, the wrong sense, the improper perspective, to read Paul - IF you are someone who believes you are (or have) an immortal soul. The dead person isn’t resurrected; the dead person is still alive and, therefore, must immediately go somewhere -> to heaven / to Jesus, or to purgatory, or to “hell” (gehenna).

Book recommendation.

This is one of my favorite books and, without a doubt, my favorite book (outside of the Bible) on the issue.
