As the modern church is so far off the rails it will be rare to hear a true prophet of God. In fact IMO it will be rare to hear a true Elder of the church.
In the time Paul is mentioning some are called to be prophets and apostles the church was of Christ. They were uncorrupted from millenia of counter and false doctrines and ideologies.
They were not actually prophesising and preaching on public or Christian forums over who was a prophet or not. They kept to themselves and lived the faith until death. So the climate was right that Christ was among them and they had visions and were of one spirit that there was no division or conflicts among them.
It seems the church has become publicised like another identity group claiming authority that has not been earnt. I think when I hear prophest Christians will know. I don't think it happens often as far as the state of affairs in the church and world. I think of the biblical prophets and they only came about so often and at the right time.
We live in a time where there are all sorts of spirits and demons at work. New age ideas of fortune telling and other mystical and gnostic ideas that seem to be whitenoise compared to Gods patient and clear words when they come to the church.
I think first get the church right and then the way is open for Gods spirit to work through prophesy but also all areas. Thats when the good fruits of the spirit are at work.
This comes to mind regarding that which is going on within and to today's churches:
Ezekiel 13:
1 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the Lord;
3 Thus saith the Lord God; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!
5 Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the Lord.
6 They have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, The Lord saith: and the Lord hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would confirm the word.
7 Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, The Lord saith it; albeit I have not spoken?
8 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord God.
9 And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the Lord God.
Hebrews 6:1
Therefore
leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
There's SOMETHING to be said about "Leading a horse to water....but ya can't MAKE 'em DRINK!"
1 Peter 2:5
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Because HERE is where the "HEAVY LIFTING" Starts!
So? At anytime a believer stops along THIS path towards the "Strait Gate?"
Is ok!
What's NOT OK is when said person or persons start teaching or preaching that where they have chosen to end THEIR "pilgramage/s?"
Is the ending destination for EVERYONE!
