If God removed his protection entirely I believe we would all die in short order.

Do you believe judgement begins at the house of God? What will you say if God suddenly brings purifying fire? What will be left except that which doesn't burn?

That is my hope for the Church, that the verse has meaning for the end times. So more are prepared for the day of his coming.
