Ignatius – Pseudo Ignatius

Epistle of Ignatius to the Trallians, Chapter IX

On the day of the preparation, then, at the third hour, He received the sentence from Pilate, the Father permitting that to happen; at the sixth hour He was crucified; at the ninth hour He gave up the ghost; and before sunset He was buried. During the Sabbath He continued under the earth in the tomb in which Joseph of Arimathaea had laid Him. At the dawning of the Lord's day He arose from the dead, according to what was spoken by Himself, "As Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly, so shall the Son of man also be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." The day of the preparation, then, comprises the passion; the Sabbath embraces the burial; the Lord's Day contains the resurrection.

1)

On the day of the preparation…” says PI;

“It was the Preparation of the passover”, says John 19:14.

2)

“…then, at the third hour, He received the sentence from Pilate, the Father permitting that to happen…” says PI;

the sixth hour” Roman time, says John 19:14, “Pilate saith unto the Jews, Behold, your King … then he delivered Him unto them”.

3)

“…at the sixth hour He was crucified…” says PI;

“…it was the third hour (Jewish time) and they crucified him”, says Mark 15:25.

4)

“…at the ninth hour He gave up the ghost; and before sunset He was buried…” says PI;

but He gave up the ghost and immediately, “everyone who came to see that sight (of Jesus’ Crucifixion) had fled heart-beating and gone away back home”, says Luke 23:48 John 16:32 -- 3 hours before sunset.

5)

At the ninth hour He gave up the ghost; and before sunset He was buried…” says PI;

when evening had come since it had become the Preparation which is the Fore-Sabbath”, says Mark 15:42 Matthew 27:57, after sunset,

when,

First, “The Jews, because the Preparation had begun, asked Pilate that the bodies should not remain on the sabbath because That Day of sabbath was great day” of the passover sabbath John 19:31-37;

and

Next, “after these things” the Jews asked for, “Joseph besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus” John 19:38.

Only then, “That Day the Preparation”, “before sunset”, viz., “mid-afternoon the Sabbath nearing” Luke 23:54 John 19:42, Joseph “rolled a stone in the opening of the grave and went home”. Matthew 27:60.

6)

During the Sabbath He continued under the earth in the tomb in which Joseph of Arimathaea had laid Him” says PI;

but, PI does not say that “the morning after the Preparation the chief priests and Pharisees … went and made the sepulchre sure for the third day”.

7)

At the dawning of the Lord's day He arose from the dead…” says PI;

But late on the Sabbath being in the mid-afternoon against the First Day of the week drawing near there was a great earthquake” Matthew 28:1-4, and He arose from the dead.

… according to what was spoken by Himself, "As Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly, so shall the Son of man also be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

I.

The day of the preparation, then, comprises the passion” says PI;

The Preparation of the Passover”, then, comprises the passion, says Scripture;

II.

the Sabbath embraces the burial” says PI;

the “great day of sabbath” of the passover embraces the Burial, says Scripture;

III.

the Lord's Day”, says PI, meaning ‘the lord Sun’s day’, “contains the resurrection”;

On the contrary, “The Lord's Day” meaning “the Sabbath the LORD rested and revived on”, contains The Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

I guess PI could also stand for Private Interpretation …as you succinctly illustrate.
