The phrase "in the name of Christ" basically means "through the mediation of Christ" or "by Christ's authority." We cannot approach God based on our own merits. However, we can approach God based on Christ's merits. In other words, we can only approach God as we are united to Christ by faith. God will receive us and hear us for Christ's sake, not ours.

Here's an example that may be helpful. In old movies you might hear a police officer say "Stop in the name of the law!" He's basically saying, "I'm telling you to stop with the full authority and sanction of the law behind me."

Jesus is the mediator between God and mankind... so if we want to come God, we must do so through Jesus christ.

1Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, a man, Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself a corresponding ransom for all

Jesus is the means of our salvation, Jesus is the one who leads us to God, Jesus is Gods annointed one.... If the ancient Hebrews wanted Gods salvation, they had to follow Moses. Likewise, if we want salvation, we have to follow Jesus and accept his role in our salvation.
