Is drinking (coffee, coke, beer, wine, alcohol) sin?

There is no statement in the Holy Bible that says "Thou shalt not drink Coca-cola". Nor is there are admonition against consuming alcohol. King David owned vineyards. Jesus' first miracle was changing water into wine. Jesus drank wine his whole life, and drank wine at the last supper.I find nothing wrong with consuming alcohol in moderation. My personal preference is to leave alcohol (beer-wine-liquor) alone. My family has a predisposition to diabetes. Everyone has a weakness. Mine is chocolate.

There is no sin in caffeine's or alcohol the rules is everything in moderation alcohol as cema4by has said is not called a sin however drunkenness can lead to sin as it dulls the senses so again moderation is the key here.

One a side note: The wine back then had very little alcohol! You can drink ton of wine before becoming drunk. Think of it as fermenting grape juice.

I have never been a coffee drinker. I'm a tea girl. I'd go mad without my tea. I guess I'm addicted, but it's not the caffiene in it, because I make mine rather weak. I also enjoy herbal tea. I think it's the comfort factor that I'm addicted to, right? As for Coke, and coffee, I agree that it should be everything in moderation. If there is anything in our lives that we put before our relationship with God then I think it's a sin, and it doesn't matter what it is. You can make anything your false god, your idol, right?

I'm not a coffee guy, or tea for that matter. But soda...Dr Pepper mainly is something I REALLY enjoy!! And as far as alchohol goes, I am to young and it would be illegal for me to drink any but I would never even consider touching it even if I could drink it! It has nearly taken my life through drunk drivers multiple times, nearly paralyzed me once as well.

I don't think that "drinking stings like a Viper" means it's bad. If you've ever drank whiskey, you know what "stings like a Viper" means

Well said that the Bible doesn't say NO to COKE. There was no coke at that time. So what about Cocaine, Marijuana, Heroin, Opium, etc. They are not mentioned in the Bible at all. Are they all OK? I don't think that since it is not mentioned in the Bible so that it is not Biblical and all are fine.One deacon said, "smoking cigarette is OK because it doesn't say in the Bible that you must not smoke"I don't mean that coke is narcotic and we should not drink. I like coke. But I am just curious about others' opinion and argument. And I want to argue about the presumption that if it is not mentioned in the Bible, it is non-biblical, and it is not correct.What do you think?

If drinking coffee is a sin, then I am in BIG TROUBLE! I sin every morning. I don't think it is especially good for me. I do think it is somewhat addictive, though. I would probably get a headache if I went a day or two without it until I got my system cleansed. Yes, I do think since caffeine is a stimulant, it is addictive. Also, they use coffee sometimes for A.D.H.D. children to replace other stimulant meds. It helps them focus. Down here in Louisiana we have a very good, rich coffee called Community Coffee. You can't get it anywhere else. That's really the only kind I like. But I try to drink water the rest of the day to balance it out. As far as the alcohol goes, I'm not so sure about the less fermented. It seem as if it would have been moreso, with no refrigeration, sitting longer,etc. It's scary now because they didn't have cars to crash into and cause fatalities. The consequences are much more dangerous. I don't think it's wrong to drink UNLESS you're causing someone else to sin (like causing an alcoholic to drink); see Romans 14:15. It's a tricky area.

i think the big thing that the Lord is outlining here is not to get DRUNK or ADDICTED as these both become sin strongholds in ones lifeand on a side note: while it is true that wine and beer in those days had way less alcohol then it does now that does not change the FACT that the sin was drunkeness not consumptionthe reason it is a sin is you work your self into an altared state of concissness same with drugs derived from plants but there is a reason God has put those there and i belive it is for pain killers weed for instance is good for MS patients, now of course that doesnt mean that it is permissible for me or anyone else without MS to use itOpium is used in production of morphine and we all know that is a major pain killercould you imagine waking up from a surgery and not having morphine! holy crap that would suck!cocaine is also used in local anestetic like stuff they would use to freeze you mouth at a dentist appointment all these things God gave us to use but NOT to get HIGH off ofbut then we have more man made highs like Smoking which we all know is bad for our body and WILL give you cancer im not even sure what other things tobbacco is good for i think though caffine is different its true you can get addicted to it but if we all looked at our coffee drinking habbits i dont really think we would consider outselves addicted true addiction would be drinking it to the point where it causes harm to yourself did you know that women who drink 8 -12 cups of coffee a day lower there chances of breast cancer by 30%?! thats huge!!

There are many things which are either harmful or beneficial to the body not mentioned in the Bible. We can not say that it is not sinful becuase it is not mentioned in the Bible.Nuclear can serve as a huge power to good use for the people. It can also kill millions of people by nuclear bomb. It doesn't mentioned in the Bible regarding the nuclear power.My final opinion is: whatever we use or eat or drink, if it is good and benefial to the body, it is not sin at all. Drinking water is not a sin and it is good for the body. But if you drink excessively like ten gallon of water in one sitting, it will cause you water-intoxication and your life.Agree?

Jesus changed at least 120 gallons of water to wine, and it was also served at the last supper, then he told his disciples that the next time he drinks it will be with them in heaven, so there's nothing wrong with a tipple as long as its not abused..As for caffeine, the Bible says nothing at all about it, but then it doesn't cause any problems because it can't be abused..

PS - i don't drink booze myself, tried a few sips in my teens but it all tasted like cat pee so I've stuck with milk and lemonade ever since..

I guess what disturbs me about this thread it the idea that we live by a list of "Thou shalt nots" which is wrong headed and leads to problems to my way of thinking.Jesus came to fulfill the law and in doing this he established a new covenatal relationship.

Hebrews 8: 13By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what i s obsolete and aging will soon disappear."​

Paul says that the law was temporary and was only in effect until Jesus came.

Galatians 3: 23Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. 24So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ[h] that we might be justified by faith. 25Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.​

He chastises the Galatians for trying to re-institute the law. He says that anyone who lives under the law is cursed.He says in Galatians 4, 9 But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! 11 I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.There is a better way. It is to live by faith through the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5: 16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.​

So if it is bad to live under God's law which was perfect, then it is just plain ridiculous to live by man-made laws that are not even found in the Bible.He says in Colossians 2:

16Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.​

20Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: 21"Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? 22These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. 23Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.​

Rules such as do not drink this or eat that are based on "false humility" according to Paul. They appear to be wise, but they do not work. They do not attack the source of the problem which is human will. As such they are ineffective.The only thing that works is to live by the Holy Spirit which helps us to deal with the problem at source. By becoming dependent on the Holy Spirit we willingly submit ourselves to him and subordinate our will to his. Paul says it leads to false humility, but I would add it leads to false pride and judgmental behavior.Blessings,Dunamite

I guess I wasn't taking it quite as seriously as this. Of course, alcoholism is very serious, though. We are free in the Spirit, but at the same time, Paul did say also not to do anything that would hurt your brother as far as to cause him to stumble. That is an important thing to be careful of. Freedom with responsibility equals joy. Is that an oxymoron?

Are you for real? Drinking coffee a sin? I know some where it says in moderation about alcohol but I do not remember where I quit alcohol almost 8 years ago and have not looked back...oh and if coffee is a sin then G-d better scratch me off his book because I have sinned beyond reproach..........
