QUOTE
11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Some have explained this verse as saying that God has a plan for everyone's life. But from reading the rest, it seems to be a promise to a specific group of people in a specific period of time and not a general promise for everyone. Anyone?

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."This is God speaking and telling you that He knows exactly what you are, and what you are made of, because He can read your mind. When you love the Lord and try to do what is in His Word, those thoughts are of peace and not of evil. God know your heart, and if you love Him you will study and keep His Word. When you do the things that he expects of you, He will give you that expected end, which is eternal life of peace. God is telling you that He will keep His Word, exactly as it is written and you can count on it. What is the expected End? have you read.It is God wish that all of His children would come to know Him, however we know that they won't. God created each person with their soul to make a choice between Him or Satan, and we know that many will choose Satan.

When reading Scripture it is important to read verses in context, not just picking one out here and there. Jeremiah 29: 11 is one verse in a whole chapter, and to understand it one needs to look at the whole. That is part of "rightly dividing the Word of Truth." Consider dividing the text like this and it might be easier to understand: vss. 1-7, Letter of Jeremiah to the captivity.vss. 8-9, Dehortation. False prophetsvss10-14, Prophacy to captives. Goodvs. 15, Dehortation. False prophetsvss. 16-19. Prophacy to residue. Evilvss. 20-29. Dehortation. False prophetsvss. 30-32. Message of Jehovah to the CaptivityFirst, about the text: It is a letter from Jeremiah to the people of the captivity, that is the Hebrew people taken from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar, and to the Hebrew people that chose to stay in Jerusalem instead of following God's command for them to go into captivity. Jeremiah starts by telling the captives in Babylon to get "comfortable, because you are going to be there a while" (vss 1-7). Jer 29:1 Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon; Jer 29:2 (After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;) Jer 29:3 By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying, Jer 29:4 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon; Jer 29:5 Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them; Jer 29:6 Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished. Jer 29:7 And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. Then he warns the captive peoples about the false prophets that are with them (vss. 8-9) Jer 29:8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. Jer 29:9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD. In vss 10-14, Jeremiah tells them some good news: Jer 29:10 For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. Jer 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. God is talking to the people of the captivity here, and He is saying He is happy with them for following orders and going into captivity like He told them to.Jer 29:12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. Jer 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. Jer 29:14 And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive. Verse 15 gives a stern advice against the false prophets.Jer 29:15 Because ye have said, The LORD hath raised us up prophets in Babylon; Verses 16-19 are the bad news for the people that stayed in Jerusalem. In another place God tells them that because they retained the name "Jew" they would be driven from every country they tried to settle in, and persecuted.Jer 29:16 Know that thus saith the LORD of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity; Jer 29:17 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil. Jer 29:18 And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them: Jer 29:19 Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the LORD, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the LORD. Verses 20-29 give even harsher words to the false prophets. Jer 29:20 Hear ye therefore the word of the LORD, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon: Jer 29:21 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes; Jer 29:22 And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire; Jer 29:23 Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the LORD. Jer 29:24 Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying, Jer 29:25 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying, Jer 29:26 The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks. Jer 29:27 Now therefore why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you? Jer 29:28 For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them. Jer 29:29 And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet. Verses 30-32. God's punishment for the false prophetsJer 29:30 Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, Jer 29:31 Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the LORD concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie: Jer 29:32 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the LORD; because he hath taught rebellion against the LORD.

Hi Friend. what the verse before verse 11 says, which tells us the complete picture of what God is saying. Jerm 29:10-13 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12) Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13) And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. This is a prophecy made to the House of Israel, with God's thoughts towards them, his wife, whom prostituted herself out to others. God's expected end for Jacob is to be over them with his tent. To answer/hearken when they pray. For they did not accept Jesus in this world now, the whole house. In the Coming Kingdom, which this prophecy is for, they will seek him and he will answer them. We are there with them. Isa 44:5 One will say, I belong to the Lord (Christians) another will call himself Jacob ( all Israelites) and still another will write on his hand, "The LORD'S" and take the name Israel. (maybe the prophets and apostles, not sure) In Christ's words of life Vickie

To pull all these posts together for you its what we see a double prophecy here in Jeramiah it happened before but its will happen again Jeremiah 29:10 "For thus saith the Lord, `That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place."This is exactly as it came to pass as we can verify through historical means. They were captive in Babylon exactly seventy years. We know that this is important to understand, because this seventy years leads us to the seventy weeks of years prophecy by Daniel, Daniel 9:24-27. We know that all of the children of Judah did not return, but only a handful of the house of Judah returned. When we read the book of Ezra and Nehemiah, and understand the languages, we see that most of the Leivital priest had scattered. In fact Ezra states that there was not one of the Levitical priest was in the group that was returning to Jerusalem. Jeremiah 29, God told Jeremiah to write a letter, however to us today we read that letter after the fact of it coming to pass. This letter then is a set of instruction to us, even, to let us know what we are to do when that false messiah is here and in control. What we have to do them is to apply these instructions to the terms of today. Prophetic utterances from our Heavenly Father are warnings to latter generations, because as it is written in the Book of Ecclesiastes 1:9; "There is nothing new under the sun." what went around then, is going to come around again very shortly, in our generation.
