31) Looking for Daniel

Daniel 7

Daniel has a vision about the future and the end and he writes it down. And he is afraid of what he sees. His thoughts alarm him greatly, so that he turns pale.

- Daniel has a vision!

- But it is like a nightmare!

- Thus he is afraid!

- And more than that!

- Should we be afraid?

Daniel 8

Daniel has another vision about the future and the end. He is terrified. Then he feels exhausted and he is sick for some days.

- Do you see the evolution?

- First he is afraid and greatly alarmed and he turns pale!

- Then he is terrified and sick for some days!

- What about us?

33) Looking for Daniel

Daniel 9

Daniel speaks about the 70 years for Jerusalem to stay desolated and to be reconstructed. Then he prays God so that Jerusalem can be reconstructed. In his prayer, he speaks about Israel: the country has sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled and has deviated from God’s commandments and judgments and has not listened to God’s servants and prophets. And shame belongs to Israel: the country has acted unfaithfully and has rebelled and not obeyed the voice of God. And Israel has paid a high price for its attitude. And Daniel asks for forgiveness. And because DANIEL IS A PRECIOUS MAN, he is told that Jerusalem will be rebuilt and Messiah will come and will be put to death and a foreign nation will destroy Jerusalem. And after that there will be wars. And it is spoken about extermination.

- Yes, Daniel is called PRECIOUS MAN!

- And in his prayer he speaks about every sin Israel has committed!

- And he is told about the reconstruction of Jerusalem!

- And about the coming of Messiah and his death!

- And the destruction of Jerusalem!

- And Israel will keep acting badly!

- And turning away from God!

- And the same for humanity!

- They will never listen because they don’t care!

- And God will cleanse this world!

- No need to cry for it because it deserves it just like Israel!

34) Looking for Daniel

Daniel 10

Daniel is given a revelation about a great conflict. He has been mourning for three full weeks. When he sees the vision, the men with him don’t see it but a great trembling seizes them and they run away and hide. And because of what he sees, there is no power left in him and his dignified appearance leaves him and he loses all strength. Once again he is called PRECIOUS MAN. Daniel is trembling. His prayer has been heard because of his attitude and his humility. So Daniel is told about the final part of the days. But Daniel says he has no strength and no breath is left in him.

- Through all the Bible men have been warned!

- And here it is the same story!

- And when Daniel has a new vision, it is so powerful that he can’t stand it!

- Do you have an idea of what is going to happen when Jesus comes back as a warrior to cleanse the earth under the orders of his father?

- Think about the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans!

- But it will be nothing compared to what will happen to the world!

- But humanity keeps acting as if everything was normal!

- Of course, they are a bit afraid because the situation is degrading!

- Even when we know, it will be a surprise!

- Because at the present time we see things we could have never imagined at all!

- And we will see a lot more!

- But it will be nothing compared to the coming of Jesus as a king and warrior!

35) Looking for Daniel

Daniel 11

Here we are told about a refining work and a cleansing and a whitening until the time of the end.

- Refining work and cleansing and whitening!

- It requires a lot of work!

- It requires to be 100% active!

- It requires personal implication!

- Action is necessary!

- Reading the Bible carefully to understand it!

- Nobody can stand quietly!

- Daniel couldn’t do it in his visions!

- Everybody must prepare oneself and encourage others to do the same!

- First you need to save yourself!

- Second help others to save themselves!

- But if you wait for others to save you it won’t work!

- Personal implication is required from everybody!

- being lukewarm doesn’t work!

- it has never worked!

- And people keep thinking it will work for them!

- Bad choice!

36) Looking for Daniel

Daniel 12

In Daniel’s vision we are told about a time of distress such as has not occurred since there came to be a nation until that time. And during that time your people will escape, everyone who is found written down in the book. And many of those asleep in the dust of the earth will wake up, some to everlasting life and others to reproach and to everlasting contempt. “And those having insight will shine as brightly as the expanse of heaven, and those bringing the many to righteousness like the stars, forever and ever… Many will cleanse themselves and whiten themselves and will be refined. And the wicked ones will act wickedly, and none of the wicked will understand; but those having insight will understand.

- yes, DISTRESS!

- The possibility to wake up!

- The possibility to cleanse and whiten oneself and be refined!

- But it is necessary to make efforts!

- NO EFFORT, NO REFINING!

- And the wicked one won’t understand!

- He will keep doing his business!

37) God and Daniel / Daniel and God

Daniel 1:

- Daniel is brought to Babylon because he is young without any defect, of good appearance, endowed with wisdom, knowledge, and discernment, and capable of serving in the king’s palace!

- And the more we read the book of Daniel, the more it appears that all this is connected to Daniel’s relationship with God!

- Every aspect of his life has something to do with this relationship!

- No God, No Daniel!

- And the more he learns the more he gets closer to God!

- There is only another way that is getting away from God!

- This relationship evolves perpetually!

- It has to be build up continually!

- Otherwise it goes away!

- There isn’t a third option!

- One way or the other!

- And it is a personal choice!

- Something you have to work at personally or not!

- You can’t take a break otherwise you go the other way!

- BURNING OR FREEZING!

38) God and Daniel / Daniel and God

Daniel 1:

- But Daniel resolves in his heart that he won’t defile himself with the king’s delicacies or with the wine He drinks!

- So he asks the principal court official for permission not to defile himself in this way!

- And the true God causes the principal court official to show Daniel favor and mercy!

- God first!

- In any aspect of Daniel’s life!

- In particular food and beverages!

- So Daniel doesn’t wait, he acts straight away!

- He doesn’t let the others act for him!

- And God is always present!

- That’s what we can call a deep and straight relationship!

Daniel 1:

- But the principal court official says to Daniel: “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink!

- What if he should see you looking worse in appearance than the other youths of your age?

- You would make me guilty before the king!

- But Daniel says to the guardian whom the principal court official has appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: “Please, test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink; then compare our appearance with the appearance of the youths who are eating the king’s delicacies, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”

- At the end of ten days their appearance is better and healthier than all the youths who are eating the king’s delicacies!

- And the true God give these four youths knowledge and insight into every kind of writing and wisdom; and Daniel is given understanding in all sorts of visions and dreams!

- Daniel is always ready to defend his relationship with God so he doesn’t lose time but acts all at once!

- And he knows what to do and what to say!

- Of course, he may receive God’s help and spirit!

- Because both Daniel and God are part of the deal and each one play his part!

- We are only told about Daniel and his three companions!

- But Daniel is above!

- He gets more because his relationship with God is stronger!

- Of course, his three companions have a strong relationship with God!

- And Daniel’s companions are not jealous about Daniel’s relationship with God!

- They can also benefit too!

- When the king speaks with them, no one in the entire group is found to be like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; and they continue to serve before the king.

- Imagine the quantity of people!

- They are many!

- And among so many people only four get out of the mass!

- Can you visualize the scene?

- It is unbelievable!

- Four against a multitude!

- They definitely have God’s spirit!

- And among the four, Daniel gets out of them!

- So first Daniel, second his three companions and the rest!

Who was Daniel in the Bible? | GotQuestions.org

We can read about the life of Daniel in his own writings in the book of Daniel and also in Ezekiel 14:14, 20 and 28:3. There are some striking similarities between the life of Daniel and that of Jacob’s son Joseph. Both of them prospered in foreign lands after interpreting dreams for their rulers, and both were elevated to high office as a result of their faithfulness to God.

After Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, besieged Jerusalem, he chose noble men from Israel’s royal household who were handsome and showed an aptitude for learning, to be trained in the ways of the Babylonians. After their three years’ training, they would be put into the king’s service (Daniel 1:1-6). Daniel, whose name means “God is my judge,” and his three countrymen from Judea were chosen and given new names. Daniel became “Belteshazzar,” while Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah became “Shadrach," "Meshach," and "Abednego.” The Babylonians most likely gave them new names that were completely disassociated with their Hebrew roots to hasten Daniel and his friends’ assimilation into the Babylonian culture.

Daniel and his compatriots proved to be the wisest of all the trainees, and, at the end of their training, they entered the service of King Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel’s first sign of faithfulness to God was when he and his three friends rejected the rich food and wine from the king’s table, because they deemed it a defilement, and became vegetarians. As their health improved, they were permitted to continue with their chosen diet. In their education, the four men from Judah became knowledgeable in all Babylonian matters, and Daniel was given by God the ability to understand dreams and visions of all kinds (Daniel 1:17).

In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar was troubled with a dream that he could not interpret. Beyond interpretation, Nebuchadnezzar commanded his magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and astrologers to also describe his dream. These men were willing to try to interpret the dream if Nebuchadnezzar first told them what it was, but they said that revealing the dream itself was an impossible task for humans. The king decreed that all the wise men, including Daniel and his companions, must be put to death. However, after Daniel sought God in prayer, the mystery of the king’s dream was revealed to Daniel, and he was taken to the king to interpret it. Daniel immediately attributed his ability to interpret dreams to the one true God (Daniel 2:28). The key feature of the dream was that one day there will be a kingdom set up by God that will last forever, and that God’s kingdom will destroy all previous, man-made kingdoms (Daniel 2:44-45). For his wisdom, Daniel was honored by King Nebuchadnezzar and placed in authority over all the wise men of Babylon. At Daniel’s request, his three countrymen were also placed in positions of authority as administrators of Babylon.

Later, King Nebuchadnezzar had another dream, and again Daniel was able to interpret it. The king acknowledged that Daniel had the spirit of his holy God within him (Daniel 4:9). Daniel’s interpretation of the dream was correct. After experiencing a period of insanity, Nebuchadnezzar was restored to health, and he praised and honored Daniel’s God as the Most High (Daniel 4:34-37).

Nebuchadnezzar’s son, Belshazzar, became the new king, and during a banquet he ordered the gold and silver goblets that had been stolen from the holy temple in Jerusalem to be brought out for use. In response to the defilement of such holy items, Belshazzar sees a hand writing on the wall. His astrologers are unable to assist him in its translation, and so Daniel is called upon to interpret the writing (Daniel 5:13-16). As a reward for interpreting the writing, Daniel is promoted by King Belshazzar to the third highest position in the Babylonian kingdom (verse 29). That night, as Daniel had prophesied, the king was slain in battle, and his kingdom was taken over by the Persian Cyrus the Great, and Darius the Mede was made king.

Under the new ruler, Daniel excelled in his duties as one of the administrators to such a degree that King Darius was contemplating making him head over all the kingdom (Daniel 6:1-3). This infuriated the other administrators so much that they looked for a way to bring Daniel down. They could find no wrongdoing on Daniel’s part, so they focused on the matter of Daniel’s religion. Using flattery, the administrators coaxed Darius into issuing a decree forbidding prayers to any god other than the king for the next thirty days. The penalty for disobedience was to be thrown into a den of lions. Daniel disobeyed the edict, of course, and continued to pray openly to the true God. As Daniel made no attempt to hide his activity, he was seen praying and arrested. With much regret the king gave the order for Daniel to be thrown into the lions’ den, but not without a prayer that Daniel’s God would rescue him (Daniel 6:16). The next day, when Daniel was found alive and well, he told the king that God had sent an angel to shut the lions’ mouths and so he had remained unharmed. This miracle resulted in King Darius sending out a decree that all his subjects were to worship the God of Daniel. Daniel continued to prosper throughout King Darius’ reign.

Daniel is also well known for the prophetic dreams and visions God gave him, recorded in the book of Daniel. Daniel’s prophecies cover a broad range of human history, as he predicted the rise and fall of the Greek and Roman Empires and the rise of a powerful king who “will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods” (Daniel 11:36). Daniel’s “seventy weeks” prophecy spoke of a Messiah who would be killed (Daniel 9:24–27). We saw this prophecy fulfilled with Jesus. The remainder of the prophecy—the seventieth week—will be fulfilled in the end times. Daniel had other apocalyptic visions as well, and understanding his prophecies is important to eschatology.

Daniel exercised great integrity and, in doing so, received the respect and affection of the powerful rulers he served. However, his honesty and loyalty to his masters never led him to compromise his faith in the one true God. Rather than it being an obstacle to his success, Daniel’s continual devotion to God brought him the admiration of the unbelievers in his circle. When delivering his interpretations, he was quick to give God the credit for his ability to do so (Daniel 2:28).

Daniel’s integrity as a man of God gained him favor with the secular world, yet he refused to compromise his faith in God. Even under the intimidation of kings and rulers, Daniel remained steadfast in his commitment to God. Daniel also teaches us that, no matter whom we are dealing with, no matter what their status is, we are to treat them with compassion. See how concerned he was when delivering the interpretation to Nebuchadnezzar’s second dream (Daniel 4:19). As Christians, we are called to obey the rulers and authorities that God has put in place, treating them with respect and compassion; however, as we see from Daniel’s example, obeying God’s law must always take precedence over obeying men (Romans 13:1–7; Acts 5:29).

As a result of his devotion, Daniel found favor with man and with God (Daniel 9:20-23). Notice also in those verses what the angel Gabriel told Daniel about how swiftly the answer to his prayer was dispatched. This shows us how ready the Lord is to hear the prayers of His people. Daniel’s strength lay in his devotion to prayer and is a lesson for us all. It is not just in the bad times but on a daily basis that we must come to God in prayer.

41) God and Daniel / Daniel and God

Daniel 1:

- In every matter requiring wisdom and understanding that the king may ask them about, he finds them ten times better than all the magic-practicing priests and the conjurers in his entire realm!

- Right, they are better!

- But no, they are ten times better!

- Can you imagine the gap?

- Yes, building a deep relationship with God requires a lot of efforts and a strong will!

- It is not a game!

- It is not something you think about from time to time!

- No way!

- And all the Bible is about that!

- Why do you think there is such a minority of exceptionally faithful servants of God?

- Yes, having a straight relationship with God requires many efforts and the majority is not ready for that!

Daniel 2:

At this the king flies into a violent rage and gives the order to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. When the order is issued and the wise men are about to be killed, they also look for Daniel and his companions to put them to death. At that time Daniel discreetly and cautiously speaks to Arioch the chief of the king’s bodyguard, who has gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon. He asked Arioch, the officer of the king: “Why is there such a harsh order from the king?” Then Arioch informs Daniel about the matter. So goes in and asks the king to grant him time to tell the interpretation to the king.

- All the wise men of Babylon are going to be killed!

- And Daniel and his companions!

- When Daniel hears about that, he acts discreetly and cautiously!

- That’s interesting!

- Daniel has a special relationship with God but we can be sure that he acts discreetly and cautiously with God!

- Thus if he is used to communicating with God, he is used to communicating with important human beings who are nothing compared to God!

- So this special relationship is very helpful!

- He is ready to communicate in any situation!

- We must remember that!

- And he does everything in the right order!

- And he stays calm!

- We need to follow his example!

Daniel then goes to his house and informs his companions Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the matter. He asks them to pray for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his companions won’t be destroyed along with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

- That’s another extraordinary situation!

- Daniel has a special relationship with God but he asks his companions to pray to God too!

- He could have thought: I don’t need their help!

- I just need to pray to God alone and he will tell me the vision!

- No: he has such humility!

- Moreover, the situation is dangerous!

- He needs the information as soon as possible!

- He knows what to do and gets the best results!

- When dealing with God we learn ORDER because God is a God of Order!

- So we need to think like him, not like the people in this old world who are overwhelmed!

- And today the situation is also dangerous: if we don’t react properly we may die and we won’t have a second chance!

- And when we think of all the possibilities we will get to work for God in the new society, it would be a shame to miss them!

  • Remember:
  • Daniel is a great example of integrity!
  • His example shows the importance of an education where Yah·weh is omnipresent!
  • An education which leads to an accurate knowledge of the Bible away from today’s corruption!
  • So different from today’s world!
  • But accurate knowledge doesn’t occur by chance!
  • It means hard work and regularity and being 100% active not passive!
  • Yah.weh answered Daniel’s prayer by saying rebuilding followed by the destruction of Jerusalem!

Remember:

  • If you think like today’s people, you will never understand the Bible!
  • They used to write differently!
  • They used to speak differently!
  • They used to think differently!
  • They used to act differently!
