What if someone asks you a personal question about yourself that is none of their business, and you don't own up to it and tell them the truth? Do we have to tell them? I remember Jesus avoided answering questions about Himself, by asking them to answer a trick question first.

The Bible says that Satan is the father of lies.
I don't think it's just talking about being in a court room or damaging someone's reputation. Avoiding a question is something else but a lie is a lie

Among those who are born (again) of the spirit of God, lies are against us are against the Holy Spirit, providing it is He who has spoken in us. If we are born of God and lie in any manner, He will cut us in two and give us our portion with the hypocrites--which means He will cut us out of reigning with Him during these times, and allow our lies to blind us from all truth until the passing of our flesh.

Among those who have not the spirit of God in them, lies are common place and practice, for such are yet among the fallen as sons and daughters of Satan, the father of lies.

Lying generally falls in the category of causing harm for selfish purposes, which God forbids.

But what if a lie is defense of someone else?

What we know about WWII: many Jewish residents of Germany changed their names and acquired false papers. Those in hiding relied on whatever deception their benefactors could provide.

There are many other special examples: would you lie to save someone from harm?

In the end, when we stand in judgment, we can offer what we hope are justifiable reasons and ask forgiveness.

Yea there are some circumstances that lying would be acceptable, like to protect someone.

Like if your wife asks
"does this dress make me look fat".
You know it does but you better lie to keep the peace

Lying.
Any time you speak Knowing it is NOT True…
When the listener has an “expectation” Truth.

A listener, listening to a comedian, a joke, has no expectation it is “True”.

Lying occurs, because men Intentionally Speak “non truths”

And Because … intents spoken, and then unable to follow through with the “intent”…
Becomes a LIE.

And Because … a Truth spoken one Day… can have “circumstances” regarding the Truth… change, thus no longer a Truth.

Thus ALL men LIE, Because men are NOT all Knowing.

Thou shalt not LIE… is Not about “unforeseen s”, rather fully knowing you are Telling what is False.

Yes. and the TRUTH is, to say you are Not going to have THAT Conversation with them.

Sure. Jesus ignored ANSWERING some times.

by asking them to answer a trick question first.

Not so much a “trick question”, rather a question they could not answer.

The Lord God is All knowing…
He reveals, according to what and when He wants men to know something…
Otherwise the “unknown (to men)”, is reserved unto the Lord God.

Deut. 29:

If Jesus avoided it then it cannot be a lie. There are many secrets and mysteries He has yet to reveal. Not revealing them all now is not a lie.

Yes. and the TRUTH is, to say you are Not going to have THAT Conversation with them.

So, you say "I'm not going to have THAT Conversation with you? Then I'm sure he would have gone away thinking the worst, so I lied. He shouldn't have asked it in the first place. It really bothers me that I lied.

The reason why it bothers me so much is I'm not used to lying. I can count on one hand the number of lies I've said during my life, and they haunt me to this day. This lie was years ago. I just wish he hadn't put me in that position of having to lie. My parents kept some things from me, but they never lied to me or each other that I could see.

Can you give me an example.

If someone is asking you a personal question that your uncomfortable in answering, you can always tell them you don't wish to answer or that it's none of their business.
If that person walks away thinking the worse then that's on them, making an assumption. You haven't lied by simply denying to answer a question

In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? (James 2:25.)

Under what circumstances can lying and deceit be considered the right thing to do?

That's a "none of your business" question if ever I've seen one. Your not obliged to answer every question. You have a right to your own privacy.

But mine was just pride. The truth was none of his business. Especially, after I answered, he'd ask the same question four times!

People lie to their children about Santa Clause. Or lie to their loved ones in order to keep the peace.

We can always sincerely ask for forgiveness.
And God will forgive
That's why I prefer to pray Our Father that Jesus taught us because we are asking for forgiveness in that prayer.

The OId Testament commandment is about bearing false witness. Upon the witness of others a person could be executed.
On the other hand lying to trick someone was normal in the Middle East, and still is. It was/is thought trickery was a sign of wisdom.
That is why we should not attempt to negotiate with the Muslims. If we believe them, they think we are stupid.

Then again lying and deceiving is a sin in Christianity. Inappropriate questions from others....Sometimes not answering the question.....answers the question. As long as the intent is not to deceive it is alright not to tell the truth. Secret birthday parties and presents.

When it comes to not telling the truth.....intent is everything.

Praying wouldn't help, if I would do the same thing tomorrow. I don't have to worry about a repeat seeing as he died a few years ago, but it still bothers me, so I'm confessing to all of you that I lied, not what about...

Maybe now God can heal my back. No willful sin is important, but I'm mad he put me in that predicament.
