also how do I find out what branch of Christianity I am? thank you.
Hi and welcome.
Both of your questions seem a little vague.
What are you specifically trying to learn?
1. The Christian New Testament is not a stand alone document.
2. There are thousands of variations of the Christian faith. It would help if you listed a few things you believe and then we might be able to find you a home.

Welcome to the forum!

Do you have a new testament only bible? It is only half of the Bible. Everything in it was written after Jesus' coming. The teachings of Jesus are sufficient for salvation. So it is It is a decent place to start reading.

There are different versions of the Bible, translated from the hebrew and Greek. Some are published as the new testament, so what you have could be any number of different versions. Most common are NIV, ESV, KJV, NKJV. It is the version that may discredit a Bible, as some translations have taken liberties they shouldn't have. So let us know what version it is.

Welcome!

You will get different advice from different people. No problem. I started at beginning and read the whole Bible in a week or so. But short of that, many recomend starting with the gospel of John, then the rest of the New Testament. When you get to the book of Revelation, you will perhaps understand how reading the Old Testament is also important, because it is the foundation that the New Testament is built upon, and points to, fulfills, and confirms much of what is in the New Testament.

Don't be too concerned about your comprehension, God will provide that comprehension when the time is right.

God is good--all the best to you!

Welcome. Are you new to the Christian faith? There is simplicity in becoming a Christian. It's about coming to Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, believing on Him for forgiveness of your sins.

Most new Christians or seekers start reading the Gospel of John in the New Testament. It has many words of Jesus Christ about Himself and also His deeds. As you read the Bible and pray, you will grow spiritually.

It's not so much about denominations or branches, it's about Jesus Christ.

16For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:16-18

I got this when I did a search:

The core takeaway: Scripture uses the imagery of “babes,” “infants,” and “milk” to describe Christians who are new, immature, or still developing in spiritual understanding. The key passages cluster around three major texts: 1 Peter 2, 1 Corinthians 3, and Hebrews 5 — each highlighting a different aspect of spiritual infancy.
Below is a structured, verse‑focused roundup with context and significance.

Primary Passages About “Baby Christians” (Spiritual Infants)

1. 1 Peter 2:2 — Newborn believers needing spiritual milk

  • “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation.” Significance: Peter uses the image of a newborn craving milk to describe the healthy desire a new believer should have for God’s Word. This is the positive side of spiritual infancy — eagerness, hunger, and growth.

2. 1 Corinthians 3:1–2 — Immature believers still needing milk

  • “I could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it.” Significance: Paul rebukes the Corinthians for remaining immature. Here “babes in Christ” is negative — they should have grown but haven’t. Their immaturity shows in jealousy, strife, and division.

3. Hebrews 5:12–14 — Still infants, unskilled in righteousness

  • “You need milk, not solid food… everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.” Significance: The writer laments that these believers should be teachers by now, but instead they still need basic instruction. Spiritual infancy here means lack of discernment and inability to handle deeper teaching.

Additional Supporting Passages

John 16:12 — Not yet able to bear deeper teaching

  • “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.” Significance: Jesus acknowledges developmental limits in His disciples — not “baby Christians” per se, but the same principle: some truths require maturity.

Themes These Verses Establish

  • Spiritual infancy is normal at first (1 Peter 2:2).
  • Remaining immature is unhealthy (1 Corinthians 3:1–3).
  • Immaturity shows in behavior (envy, strife, division).
  • Immaturity shows in understanding (Hebrews 5:12–14).
  • Growth requires the Word (milk → solid food).
  • Maturity brings discernment (distinguishing good from evil).
