A journalist for the New York Times won a Pulitzer prize for a piece covering something he was an eye witness to, but failed to tell the truth. No, this wasn't last week and he wasn't writing about a Trump press conference. Nor was it during the Obama administration... Not the war in Iraq... Nor even Vietnam. No, this took place nearly 100 years ago in the 1930s.
He was there. And he lied. A deliberately escalated hunger that turned into a famine. He saw it. Over a few short years more than 2500 people were arrested for cannibalism. Eating the flesh of their neighbors because they were so hungry. Africa? No. Central America? No. Pacific islands? Not at all.
Immigrants from this country now living in New York protested this sad state of affairs. Demanded the government do something. They were physically attacked in the streets by sympathisers to the regime. Some familiar?
The death toll has been estimated to be anywhere between 2 and 10 million. No-one knows for sure how many. But even the lowest amount is a tragedy, and for a journalist to witness these events and to America and win a prestigious award for lying about it sounds eerily familiar.
So, how many here are familiar with this event, and where did it take place? And who was the despot in power that exacerbated the situation through taking food supplies from that area to feed others else where?

    @Heart2Soul

    Got it...
    QUOTE
In 1932 Duranty received a Pulitzer Prize for a series of reports about the Soviet Union, eleven of which were published in June 1931. He was criticized for his subsequent denial, and thereby exacerbation of widespread famine (1932–1933) in the USSR, most particularly the famine in Ukraine.

Do I get a prize now?

I notice he was born in England and moved to USA etc Wikipedia

Looks like that is a nasty habit at the NYT, which is a total disgrace to journalism. Someone should have shut down this paper long ago.

    Really?
Do you think any newspaper well known at all , nation wide or world wide, is in the news for the truth ?!
Did Jesus EVER say to trust men, to trust the news, to trust the carnal world system , which He Says is Pernicious (death dealing) ?

Okay, well done @Helen . Yes, the reason I was asking if anyone knew was because I didn't until last night. I was shocked that not so long ago there was such an event but somehow passed by most people's knowledge. The parallels to this day I'm America are revealing. The American Ukranians who were trying to bring this matter to the attention of the people and the government by marching, because the media were denying the reality of the situation, were physically attacked by communist sympathisers. That was 90 years ago. Seems nothing much has changed.

Totally agree . Nothing much has changed except the speed at which ‘news’ travels.
But sadly any ‘news’ that we hear these days is always very suspect.

I knew about this years ago. When Duranty was writing for the Times, information was harder to come by. A reporter can write almost anything about Ukraine and people outside Ukraine would have little reason to doubt it. Some reports of the famine did come out; but again known facts were hard to come by, and it was easy to say the news about the famine was "fake news." Yes, I'd say Duranty played the "fake news" card. Liars often do.

The Times did say later his stories were among the worst they ever published. They should probably have known better after reading his glowing praise of Stalin. On the other hand, how long would have an anti-Stalin supporter stayed alive in Stalinist Russia?

Has that changed? Some, yes. When China basically took over Hong Kong, the Times said they'd be moving some of their staff to Seoul. I was a little surprised they weren't moving them all.

Story here: New York Times moves staff out of Hong Kong amid press freedom fears

Now if Duranty should have been suspected of bias for having a cozy relationship with Communists, why do Republicans today think nothing about the people in the Trump campaign being so friendly with the Russians? Why give them a pass? I'd still like to know why the Russian Ambassador attended the Republican National Convention. (There were other ambassadors there too. Why? What business do they have there?) Was he there to discuss the weather with Jeff Sessions? Did Sessions "forget" about his meetings with the ambassador when he was asked about contacts he knew about when he was being testifying in his Senate confirmation hearing?
