I don't believe OSAS, which is usually something believed by will worshippers, who think that they are saved because of a decision they made.
I believe in POTS (Preservation/Perseverance of the Saints) - God preserves his people, so they persevere in the faith and bear good fruit.
I remember clearly something that happened nearly thirty years ago. I was in Bible College, listening to a teacher reading a passage of Scripture (he was a freewiller). He came to the part where it says, "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."; but, being a freewiller, he couldn't stomach it, so he gagged (literally - he paused and made sort of choking noises) over "...will complete it..." and changed it to "...wants to complete it...".
This was bad enough, but another freewill teacher did exactly the same thing within days, not having heard the first teacher do it, also accompanied by a pause and gagging sounds.
Philippians 1:6,
- being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ
Nowhere in the passage does it say that a believer cannot abandon the faith or that God will complete His work
regardless of that believers response.
Context,
Philippians 1:3-5,
- I thank God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,
for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now
Now you know why Paul is confident in them, that God will continue to perform His good work in them, until He returns.
The Philippians have participated in the work of the gospel from day one until the present.
Paul's confident they will continue in this work until the end.
It does not say God would complete His work in them if they abandoned their faith.
Calvinists assume their doctrine in passages when it's not there.
Now notice verse 12,
- wherefore my beloved as
ye have always obeyed not in my presence only but now much more in my absence
work our your own salvation with fear and trembling for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure
Notice both sides:
God works in you.
You must work out your salvation.
Paul does teach they have freewill.
What if they dont continue in their spiritual work?
Matthew 23:37,
- O Jerusalem, Jerusalem thou that killest the prophets and stonest them which are we sent unto thee how often would I have gathered thy children together even as a hen gathereth her chicks under her wings
but ye were not willing
The Jews resisted God by their free will.
