It was a prediction of what would happen to Israel's leaders. Where their worm is not dying and their is not being quenched. I like the continuous aspect of the Greek active tense her.
The seriousness? Yeah, burning in Hell Fire FOREVER! That's as serious as you can get!

You should do a study on Strong's G165 - aiōn and olam. The covenant that God made with Israel was not everlasting, but it was permanent. It got updated by Jesus.

That's JW doctrine: The Bible doesn't mean what it says, It means what I say.
