Apostle Paul writing to the people of and around Philippians areas, it was written in the Early Ads.
“Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you.
Paul writes to inform them, that he does not mind sharing his knowledge about the Lord again with them and it is for them to have hope and find refuge in the truth of the death, burial, resurrection of Christ and bearing with the holy spirit, trusting in God first and putting God first in every thing.
Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision; for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh, although I myself might have confidence even in the flesh.
Paul explains to them to be careful if anyone is trying to make you follow their own way and not the way of Christ. Circumcising is used in this case for those who causing division over one issue or another and not putting their total trust and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ: for those who are believers have the spirit and depend on the Lord to help you prevail because we ourselves can not to do it.
If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in the flesh, I far more: circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless.
Paul explains how he is had been basically perfect in the law. However he was a persecutor of the church and putting people down, even being part of the Tribe of Benjamin.
But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things,
Paul goes on to further explaining; but whatever things were gain to Paul, those things I have counted as a loss for the sake of Christ. (Giving up former ways of persecution to now mercy and righteousness founded in Christ and resting in God and Jesus for comfort in our souls). The old things did not matter as much as the surpassing value of knowing Christ a Jesus my Lord, whom (Paul) I have suffered the loss of all things.
and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ,
Paul founds all things that had been loss as rubbish so that Paul may gain Christ, and may be found in Jesus, not having a righteousness of (Paul own derived from the Law.
But that which is through faith in Christ. (Your righteousness is being in Jesus justified by grace through faith).
the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;
The righteousness which comes from God on the basis of Faith, that I may know Jesus and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings and be conformed to his death
Paul himself says
in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
In order that He May attain the resurrection from the dead.
Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
Paul suggest he has not obtained this resurrection from the dead yet, or that he is perfect but Paul presses on so that He May lay hold of that for which also Paul was laid hold of by Christ. (Eternal life?)
Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul suggest he has not laid hold of it yet; but one thing Paul does is forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you; however, let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained.
Because of all these things, as many as are mature, have this attitude; to keep pressing forward to the God and May hold of Christ, and obtains resurrection from the dead.
Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.
Therefore join in following Paul’s example of love and edification and support, to each other and observe who walk according to the patter you have in us, meaning Paul and the others with him. Who where always praying for these people.
For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things.
Paul talks about how some people walk, those who are enemies of the cross of Christ.
Whose end is destruction whose god is their appetite; and whose glory is their Shame (The enemies of the Cross who believe in the god which is for their stomaches to be fed, and whose glory is in their shame who set their mind in earthly things.
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.”
Paul goes on to say that our our Citizenship is in heaven from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transformed the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to himself.
