I find it crazy that because of the insurance you cannot get her the care she needs - also how expensive are funerals in the USA - I mean they are expensive here ( 3,000- 4,000 ) but you have said its 9,000 !!!!!
I am so very sorry as looking after your mum , with your own health issues is a heavy burden to carry.

My 94 year old mom was bed bound after hip surgery March 4, 2024. She only lasted about three and a half months. Died June 21, 2024. She and I shared our apartment.

But thankfully Medicare pays 100% for intermittent physical and occupational therapy at home. Also, there is no charge by Medicare if and when hospice is finally needed.

I don't know if physical therapy at home would help your mom. I think my mom declined badly fast because of having had the hip surgery.

Still taking care of my mother.
The nursing home called and went over some things and because my mother has more than $5,000 life insurance she is ineligible for Medicaid. She has death benefits of $13,500 and her funeral will cost almost $13,000.
I told them I would cash the policies (which would be considerably less) and put it on a pre pay at the funeral home and they said it didn't matter.
She has more than $5,000 life insurance, she can't get Medicaid so I would have to pay $300 a day to put her in the nursing home.
She can't get out of bed anymore and has a catheter in and I have to use a walker.
So I am just stuck here without a solution

I can confirm that, though I should clarify that this cost includes casket, an outer shell required by the state for environmental reasons, and a 1m x 2m plot of land in the local cemetery.

My wife bought the plot next to our son at a discount. I tried to negotiate for a BOGO, but they wouldn’t go for it. There’s no room for me there, so I’ll ask to be cremated and have my ashes scattered in the right front bunker on the first hole at the golf course where my league plays. I’ve died in that sand trap many times already over the years.

My sense of humor seems to be running towards the macabre today.

I checked with an advocate group for the elderly and they said that is correct, if you have more than $5,000 in life insurance you can't get Medicaid.
If your sister is on Medicaid they have probably put a lien on her house or it is in someone else's name.

Obviously, I am not in the know here. But I see this as a disgrace. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.
Medicare doesn't cover much, apparently. I recall my mom's heart medicines put her into what's called a donut hole- which means they stopped paying for her til the following year. I don't know anything know about parts a b c d etc.. but leave it to the gov to mess it all up like that. My mom did go to hospice for a week on medicare. My dad had in home nursing care while he was sick on Medicare.
They came a couple times a week to check him and prescribe. Why doesn't your mom have at least that?

Medicaid would cover nursing home and Medicare wont? This makes no sense to me. Medicaid is for people under 65 who are poor.. right? The elderly are far more likely to need a nursing home. It's seems as if it's on purpose. Awful.

btw I read back some-- There are natural things to thin the blood. Let me know if interested. I am the one who suggested chiro and other natural things before but I think you are more medically minded than natural stuff..?

Last year I started having a lot of leg pain. I thought I had pulled a muscle. Then the pain started to move around and my Doctor told me it was nerve pain. I had an MRI and I have several issues with my back but what is causing the most pain is arthritis pressing on nerves. I have had 2 epidural shots in my back and I have to have one more before I can have Radio Frequency Ablation. This will deaden the nerves for 6 months to a year. I have had trouble with my insurance company and have been held up getting the next shot. I am starting a new job in 3 weeks and will have better insurance. This job requires a lot of standing and walking. Please pray that the leg pain will not come back before I can get my next shot. I really need things to go well on this job.
