When Was the Book of Revelation Written?

Traditionally, the book of Revelation has been dated near the end of the first century, around A.D. 96. Some writers, however, have advanced the preterist (from a Latin word meaning “that which is past”) view, contending that the Apocalypse was penned around A.D. 68 or 69, and thus the thrust of the book is supposed to relate to the impending destruction of Jerusalem (A.D. 70).

A few prominent names have been associated with this position (e.g., Stuart, Schaff, Lightfoot, Foy E. Wallace Jr.), and for a brief time it was popular with certain scholars. James Orr has observed, however, that recent criticism has reverted to the traditional date of near A.D. 96 (1939, 2584). In fact, the evidence for the later date is extremely strong.

In view of some of the bizarre theories that have surfaced in recent times (e.g., the notion that all end-time prophecies were fulfilled with the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70), which are dependent upon the preterist interpretation, we offer the following.

External Evidence
The external evidence for the late dating of Revelation is of the highest quality.

Irenaeus
Irenaeus (A.D. 180), a student of Polycarp (who was a disciple of the apostle John), wrote that the apocalyptic vision “was seen not very long ago, almost in our own generation, at the close of the reign of Domitian” (Against Heresies 30). The testimony of Irenaeus, not far removed from the apostolic age, is first rate. He places the book near the end of Domitian’s reign, and that ruler died in A.D. 96. Irenaeus seems to be unaware of any other view for the date of the book of Revelation.

Clement of Alexandria
Clement of Alexandria (A.D. 155-215) says that John returned from the isle of Patmos “after the tyrant was dead” (Who Is the Rich Man? 42), and Eusebius, known as the “Father of Church History,” identifies the “tyrant” as Domitian (Ecclesiastical History III.23).

Even Moses Stuart, America’s most prominent preterist, admitted that the “tyrant here meant is probably Domitian.” Within this narrative, Clement further speaks of John as an “old man.” If Revelation was written prior to A.D. 70, it would scarcely seem appropriate to refer to John as an old man, since he would only have been in his early sixties at this time.

Victorinus
Victorinus (late third century), author of the earliest commentary on the book of Revelation, wrote:

When John said these things, he was in the island of Patmos, condemned to the mines by Caesar Domitian. There he saw the Apocalypse; and when at length grown old, he thought that he should receive his release by suffering; but Domitian being killed, he was liberated (Commentary on Revelation 10:11).

Jerome
Jerome (A.D. 340-420) said,

In the fourteenth then after Nero, Domitian having raised up a second persecution, he [John] was banished to the island of Patmos, and wrote the Apocalypse (Lives of Illustrious Men 9).

To all of this may be added the comment of Eusebius, who contends that the historical tradition of his time (A.D. 324) placed the writing of the Apocalypse at the close of Domitian’s reign (III.18). McClintock and Strong, in contending for the later date, declare that “there is no mention in any writer of the first three centuries of any other time or place” (1969, 1064). Upon the basis of external evidence, therefore, there is little contest between the earlier and later dates.

Internal Evidence
The contents of the book of Revelation also suggest a late date, as the following observations indicate.

The spiritual conditions of the churches described in Revelation chapters two and three more readily harmonize with the late date.

The church in Ephesus, for instance, was not founded by Paul until the latter part of Claudius’s reign: and when he wrote to them from Rome, A.D. 61, instead of reproving them for any want of love, he commends their love and faith (Eph. 1:15) (Horne 1841, 382).

Yet, when Revelation was written, in spite of the fact that the Ephesians had been patient (2:2), they had also left their first love (v. 4), and this would seem to require a greater length of time than seven or eight years, as suggested by the early date.

Another internal evidence of a late date is that this book was penned while John was banished to Patmos (1:9). It is well known that Domitian had a fondness for this type of persecution. If, however, this persecution is dated in the time of Nero, how does one account for the fact that Peter and Paul are murdered, yet John is only exiled to an island? (Eusebius III.18; II.25).

Then consider this fact. The church at Laodicea is represented as existing under conditions of great wealth. She was rich and had need of nothing (3:17). In A.D. 60, though, Laodicea had been almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake. Surely it would have required more than eight or nine years for that city to have risen again to the state of affluence described in Revelation.

The doctrinal departures described in Revelation would appear to better fit the later dating. For example, the Nicolaitans (2:6, 15) were a full-fledged sect at the time of John’s writing, whereas they had only been hinted at in general terms in 2 Peter and Jude, which were written possibly around A.D. 65-66.

Persecution for professing the Christian faith is evidenced in those early letters to the seven churches of Asia Minor. For instance, Antipas had been killed in Pergamum (2:13). It is generally agreed among scholars, however, that Nero’s persecution was mostly confined to Rome; further, it was not for religious reasons (Harrison 1964, 446).

its been the way of the Lord to not leave His people in the dark via prophecies and notably revelations seems to take things from where they were to the complete fulfillment. which very well could be filling in some of the blanks in some of the OT prophecies. for example the talk of Babylon in rev. is simply referring to Rome who is a child of Babylon Nebuchadnezzar's dream is the story told thereof. Babylon Persia/Media Greece Rome and i do believe a great rock takes it out, if my memory serves hence the catholic church. which has dominated the western landscape for 1600 years or more.

the RC reigned over most of what is now Europe for longer than just about any other empire had existed. which influences still in just about every country at least every continuant.

actually Rome is guilty of prophet's blood it was Rome that nailed Jesus to the cross and then pierced Him. it was Rome that killed Peter and Paul two great ones, Rome used to slaughter Christians for entertainment in the coliseum. Niro would burn Christians on posts and use the flames for light while entertaining dignitaries. so yes Rome is a slaughterer of prophets. many of them, just most are unknowns today but definitely known by the Lord their God.

The fact of the first century fulfillment of the 70th week of Daniel is as Preterist as the crucifixion of Christ. This is true regardless of whether or not the earlier dating for the book of Revelation is true.

The Messiah came and was crucified according to the exact time that many 1st-century Jews were expecting, because it was prophesied by Daniel in Daniel 9:24-27, and the time for the fulfillment of the prophecy (i.e the 70th week), had arrived, because the Jews who were familiar with Daniel 9:24-27 knew that the first 69 weeks was about to be completed (circa what we today call the year A.D 27) - the exact year Jesus began His ministry after being baptized by John the Baptist.

There are even many Rabbis today who say that the Messiah "is already 2,000 years late" because of this, and have developed theories to explain it.

Dear Jehovah, I sent this letter to you to make you aware that you must rewrite Zechariah 14, which says Jesus returns and saves Jerusalem from destruction, because the preterists insist that you will destroy the city as being the whore of Babylon.
Zechariah Chapter 14 Is The Eternal Kingdom

Zechariah 14:1-12 below shows the Lords return to earth in fire in final judgement.

(Verse 1) shows "The Day Of The Lord" also seen in 2 Peter 3:10-13 "Fire Judgement" below

(Verse 2) Shows that all nations are gathered for the final battle of armageddon.

(Verses 3-5) shows the Lords return, and his eternal feet touch down on the earthly Mt, of Olives, and in the "Twinkling Of An Eye" 1 Cor 15:52 takes place, in the catching up, resurrection, final judgement by fire, and the New Heavens, Earth, and Jerusalem being revealed for eternity, judgement complete, eternity begins.

(Verses 6-7) Eternal light seen, in the eternal kingdom, Rev 22:1-5

(Verse 8) The river of life is seen, Rev 22:1-5

(Verse 10) The New creation is being revealed, the plain is lifted up.

Dear Jehovah, I sent this letter to you to make you aware that you must rewrite Zechariah 14, which says Jesus returns and saves Jerusalem from destruction, because the preterists insist that you will destroy the city as being the whore of Babylon.

Zechariah Chapter 14 Is The Eternal Kingdom

Zechariah 14:1-12 below shows the Lords return to earth in fire in final judgement.

(Verse 1) shows "The Day Of The Lord" also seen in 2 Peter 3:10-13 "Fire Judgement" below

(Verse 2) Shows that all nations are gathered for the final battle of armageddon.

(Verses 3-5) shows the Lords return, and his eternal feet touch down on the earthly Mt, of Olives, and in the "Twinkling Of An Eye" 1 Cor 15:52 takes place, in the catching up, resurrection, final judgement by fire, and the New Heavens, Earth, and Jerusalem being revealed for eternity, judgement complete, eternity begins.

(Verse 10) The New creation is being revealed, the plain is lifted up.

When Was the Book of Revelation Written?

Traditionally, the book of Revelation has been dated near the end of the first century, around A.D. 96. Some writers, however, have advanced the preterist (from a Latin word meaning “that which is past”) view, contending that the Apocalypse was penned around A.D. 68 or 69, and thus the thrust of the book is supposed to relate to the impending destruction of Jerusalem (A.D. 70).

A few prominent names have been associated with this position (e.g., Stuart, Schaff, Lightfoot, Foy E. Wallace Jr.), and for a brief time it was popular with certain scholars. James Orr has observed, however, that recent criticism has reverted to the traditional date of near A.D. 96 (1939, 2584). In fact, the evidence for the later date is extremely strong.

In view of some of the bizarre theories that have surfaced in recent times (e.g., the notion that all end-time prophecies were fulfilled with the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70), which are dependent upon the preterist interpretation, we offer the following.

External Evidence
The external evidence for the late dating of Revelation is of the highest quality.

Irenaeus
Irenaeus (A.D. 180), a student of Polycarp (who was a disciple of the apostle John), wrote that the apocalyptic vision “was seen not very long ago, almost in our own generation, at the close of the reign of Domitian” (Against Heresies 30). The testimony of Irenaeus, not far removed from the apostolic age, is first rate. He places the book near the end of Domitian’s reign, and that ruler died in A.D. 96. Irenaeus seems to be unaware of any other view for the date of the book of Revelation.

Clement of Alexandria
Clement of Alexandria (A.D. 155-215) says that John returned from the isle of Patmos “after the tyrant was dead” (Who Is the Rich Man? 42), and Eusebius, known as the “Father of Church History,” identifies the “tyrant” as Domitian (Ecclesiastical History III.23).

Even Moses Stuart, America’s most prominent preterist, admitted that the “tyrant here meant is probably Domitian.” Within this narrative, Clement further speaks of John as an “old man.” If Revelation was written prior to A.D. 70, it would scarcely seem appropriate to refer to John as an old man, since he would only have been in his early sixties at this time.

Victorinus
Victorinus (late third century), author of the earliest commentary on the book of Revelation, wrote:

When John said these things, he was in the island of Patmos, condemned to the mines by Caesar Domitian. There he saw the Apocalypse; and when at length grown old, he thought that he should receive his release by suffering; but Domitian being killed, he was liberated (Commentary on Revelation 10:11).

Jerome
Jerome (A.D. 340-420) said,

In the fourteenth then after Nero, Domitian having raised up a second persecution, he [John] was banished to the island of Patmos, and wrote the Apocalypse (Lives of Illustrious Men 9).

To all of this may be added the comment of Eusebius, who contends that the historical tradition of his time (A.D. 324) placed the writing of the Apocalypse at the close of Domitian’s reign (III.18). McClintock and Strong, in contending for the later date, declare that “there is no mention in any writer of the first three centuries of any other time or place” (1969, 1064). Upon the basis of external evidence, therefore, there is little contest between the earlier and later dates.

Internal Evidence
The contents of the book of Revelation also suggest a late date, as the following observations indicate.

The spiritual conditions of the churches described in Revelation chapters two and three more readily harmonize with the late date.

The church in Ephesus, for instance, was not founded by Paul until the latter part of Claudius’s reign: and when he wrote to them from Rome, A.D. 61, instead of reproving them for any want of love, he commends their love and faith (Eph. 1:15) (Horne 1841, 382).

Yet, when Revelation was written, in spite of the fact that the Ephesians had been patient (2:2), they had also left their first love (v. 4), and this would seem to require a greater length of time than seven or eight years, as suggested by the early date.

Another internal evidence of a late date is that this book was penned while John was banished to Patmos (1:9). It is well known that Domitian had a fondness for this type of persecution. If, however, this persecution is dated in the time of Nero, how does one account for the fact that Peter and Paul are murdered, yet John is only exiled to an island? (Eusebius III.18; II.25).

Then consider this fact. The church at Laodicea is represented as existing under conditions of great wealth. She was rich and had need of nothing (3:17). In A.D. 60, though, Laodicea had been almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake. Surely it would have required more than eight or nine years for that city to have risen again to the state of affluence described in Revelation.

The doctrinal departures described in Revelation would appear to better fit the later dating. For example, the Nicolaitans (2:6, 15) were a full-fledged sect at the time of John’s writing, whereas they had only been hinted at in general terms in 2 Peter and Jude, which were written possibly around A.D. 65-66.

Persecution for professing the Christian faith is evidenced in those early letters to the seven churches of Asia Minor. For instance, Antipas had been killed in Pergamum (2:13). It is generally agreed among scholars, however, that Nero’s persecution was mostly confined to Rome; further, it was not for religious reasons (Harrison 1964, 446).

@TEXBOW ..found a perfect thread that was dead for a few months already. And you must agree with the author of it then...

Besides what I mentioned on the other thread concerning the early writers, I do have a few more additions to the subject at this time.

1. In the Book of Revelation (2:9 and 3:9) it mentions false, pretender Jews. These false Jews are of the seed of the Pharisees and were the Judaizers after Christ ascended. They plagued the fledgling Christian community. After the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, and the deaths and enslavements that ensued, these Judaizers would have all but disappeared. Why would John make mention of them as an issue that was already past?

2. As you said Paul around 50 AD established the church at Ephesus. One of 7 churches that John wrote about in Revelations. These 7 were well established even by 60 AD. If John wrote his book around 95 AD why would he only still mention the original 7 churches of Asia Minor. There should have been many dozens established by that time? He would have wrote about many more...

And then you said John pegs them in the Book of Revelation for a major offense of forgetting their first love. Well many things can happen in 8-10 years? Especially during a great Tribulation period.

4. John in the Book of Revelation was told to the measure the Temple in Chapter 11. This must mean the Temple was still standing. And if one believes this Book of Revelation was written about 95 AD and this Temple really means a future, thousands of years in the future, new Temple rebuilt, why does not John mention the complete destruction of the 2nd Temple.

5. In Rev 2:2 there are still apostles around, as the church of Ephesus has tested for the genuine article. So are we to believe that in 95 AD the apostles are still hanging around. They all were dead before by 70 AD...

Besides what I mentioned on the other thread concerning the early writers, I do have a few more additions to the subject at this time.

1. In the Book of Revelation (2:9 and 3:9) it mentions false, pretender Jews. These false Jews are of the seed of the Pharisees and were the Judaizers after Christ ascended. They plagued the fledgling Christian community. After the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, and the deaths and enslavements that ensued, these Judaizers would have all but disappeared. Why would John make mention of them as an issue that was already past?

2. As you said Paul around 50 AD established the church at Ephesus. One of 7 churches that John wrote about in Revelations. These 7 were well established even by 60 AD. If John wrote his book around 95 AD why would he only still mention the original 7 churches of Asia Minor. There should have been many dozens established by that time? I think a proper understanding of Revelation is necessary, to begin with. I really have no reason other than trying to know the truth (no dog in this fight) regarding this question. I find it hard to believe that the book of Revelation was penned earlier than any of the other books or epistles. The book would have been hard to ignore or I should say the revelations of John's writing would have been hard to ignore if known. It also makes logical sense that the book is written last. Add that to the early writings and I see the evidence leaning towards a 95 AD or later date. We will not resolve this. Hyper grace movement followers I think need an early date to help in their view of doctrine. They need it to be written before Paul's ministry to the Gentiles. In fact, I think the vast majority of the date debate originated as a result of the Hyper-Grace movement.

I find it hard to believe that the book of Revelation was penned earlier than any of the other books or epistles. The book would have been hard to ignore or I should say the revelations of John's writing would have been hard to ignore if known. It also makes logical sense that the book is written last. Add that to the early writings and I see the evidence leaning towards a 95 AD or later date. We will not resolve this. You are right we are not going to solve this issue here. I do have the Book of Revelation as being written the last not the earliest of those in the NT. 1/2/3/ John about 65-66 AD and Rev 66-68

do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.
