Religion itsefl is human made. The rituals and traditions of man. But to help the poor and widows is a nobel cause of the spirit. You don't have to be religious. In fact religion can be in practice or tradition and not in the spirit.

I think thats the essense of what James is saying. I think James was a devout Jew so perhaps he was speaking from the Jewish perspective of the religious rituals and traditions that the Jews believed was the only source of being made right before God.

In that sense I think James was saying that helping widows and the poor is the new pure religion. Which is the spirit of the law.

Its interesting that he mentions that we should be unstained by the world. Its not that we just help others and do good. But that we do it in a way that honors God. Destinguishing our good works from the world.
