As a pastor of nearly thirty years, I have a plethora of Bible study resources available in my electronic library and what few hardbound reference books I still own. I am looking however, for a good study Bible to use when teaching as a ready reference for historical questions, explanation of Biblical terms etc. I could always research the answer and get back to the person making the inquiry, but I'd rather have something on hand. Any recommendations?

Well as a pastor of only about 6 years I am building my library, both electronically and hardcopy. My most trusted source as a ready reference if I have my laptop handy is a program called e-sword. I usually type in a few words and it select the books I have with the phrase or words. It's created by Rick Myers. I thought he had what was called a pocket version to download onto i-phones or blackberry but I think he has replaced it with this link http://live.e-sword.net/ which he say can be accessed by an i-phone or i-pod. Othe rthan that I have a KJV study Bible from Thomas Nelson publishers that I carry.

I find most "Study Bibles" to be lacking - and I use this phrase not because I want to.

I further find myself getting more than annoyed with what's passed off these days as a study tool. Perhaps my definition of a study Bible is different from others, but I expect a Bible where you have a variety of tidbits of information on things like the original languages, notes on the translation and renderings, and other details like that on a truly consistent basis - ie: every other verse. The only Bible I've found that satisfactorily accomplishes this is the Companion Bible. Unfortunately, it does use the KJV. I don't say that because I believe the KJV to be a bad translation but that it can hamper trying to communicate with someone who is not used to the language.

I'd exercise a word of caution in that like any other Bible, there are "biases" towards what the author believes. This comes through in topics like the Rapture, etc. and it is based on older scholarship. However, the way Dr. Bullinger explains things, I think even someone who might not agree with everything he says can appreciate and respond to questions about the Bible. At the very least it gets you digging. It's more than the denominational notes and devotions that most Study Bibles seem to include.

I think there are just those times where you have to admit you don't have the answer right off and need to study it.

Well, I have Biblesofts 500.00 program with tons of commentary and extra bibles. Even on my Quad core and high speed 4 gigs of ram with a video card that will run every game out there with graphic all the way up, Biblesoft lags when pulling up scripture.

I found that e-sword is the best out there and free, I also find that most of the commentary is just based on someones doctrine and full of unbelief. So, I just use my KJV and concordance, then compare with other bibles. You can keep all that commentary. Even in my Thompson Chain reference, it often gives incorrect links and leads to some incorrect conclusions.

When someone ask me a question, I normally don't get wrapped up in History, but it's a question about getting victory in their life. The Holy Spirit is the best teacher and always gives me a Word of Wisdom or Knowledge to give that person victory. Nothing can touch, hearing from God. I suggest that you also get your information from the one that will show you things to come.

Well, Mike, finally something we agree on :) it's almost scarry :) . I use esword much of the time. I added The Complete Word Study Dictionary, (Provided by AMG Publishers) for $40.00 and it's a great resource. I have discovered the esword's Strong's Concordance is not complete so I also check my hard copy.

Just one added think for those that use esword. Rick Meyers makes esword available for free and "Less than 1% of the people who download e-Sword return to say "thanks" and contribute financially." Consider making a $20.00 donation and receive an e-Sword CD containing nearly all of the downloads available on the web site.

I forgot about that.I recently downloaded the companion Bible and have browsed it but have not really dug into it yet. There is one preacher out there who is a big supporter of this Bible but I won't say his name because that would start a lot of so called unneccesary discussion here instead of focusing on God's word.

Sad but true Brother JerryJohson. My Biblesoft is not even installed, I mean it takes several sluggins menu clicks just to get to any Greek, and the interface was very Awkward. I tried a couple others that cost lots of money, and E-Sword hands down is the best out there. (My wife still uses the paper book concordence and just can't convince her that E-Sword would greatly help in bible Study.)

Be blessed JerryJohnson.

dw, to really appreciate the Companion Bible you want to learn how to use the structure. That is the important addition to the Companion becaust it helps rightly divide. EW Bullinger's book, How to Enjoy The Bible would also be an important tool to have and read.
