Putin often invokes the Russian Orthodox Church in his public speeches, giving the church a much more prominent place in Russian political life than under his predecessors. But these invocations hardly seem sincere in the religious sense. Rather, he has used the church to justify Russian expansion and to try to discredit the West’s influence in Eastern Europe.

Putin is seeking to tighten his grip on Ukraine and Belarus, as well as expand Russian influence further into Eastern and Central Europe. He will undoubtedly continue to promote Orthodoxy in the process. This is simply an attempt to seduce former Soviet republics back under the sway of Russia.

The Kremlin’s use of Orthodox Christianity makes perfect sense, given religious trends in the region. Orthodox Christianity has enjoyed a marked revival in Eastern Europe in the last two decades. In nine of Russia’s regional neighboring states—Moldova, Greece, Armenia, Georgia, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Belarus—more than 70 percent of people identify as Orthodox, according to current Pew Research results.

This revival of Orthodoxy coincides with pro-Russian sentiment. Pew Research notes that in the nine former Soviet nations that are majority-Orthodox—except for Ukraine—more than half of those surveyed agree that “a strong Russia is necessary to balance the influence of the West.”

As Putin seeks more influence over these nations, emphasizing traditional religion serves two of his goals. It establishes a common ground between Russia and Eastern Europe, and, more importantly, amplifies the differences that Eastern Europe may have with the West—especially as the Western world drifts further away from traditional values and religion.

Putin’s use of traditional Christianity is calculated for political effect. American and European observers would do well to see through the charade.

It's a darn good question. I have a bit unusual perspective, though I got my ideas from others. I think the Beast Empire will be European Civilization uniting East and West, including Russia and the US, and all of Europe. However, until that happens Russia and the US are like the thumbs on left and right hands, and they seek the sphere that enables them to be dominant in the roles they play.

Right now, Russia is decompressing from the fall of the Soviet Union, and trying to establish itself as a major player, having isolated itself during the Cold War. I expect that instead of taking on the entire world, Russia will have to concede a lot in order to become the powerful player it already is.

Russia is still able to rely on partner China to be the rogue operator on the world stage. As long as it has China as an ally, what is to prevent it from being adventurous, particularly since China itself operates freely as a bully on the world stage?

At some point, I think Russia will opt for European relations, instead of its alliance with China. And that becomes more feasible as Europe loses its Christian identity and becomes more socialist. That's a sad state of affairs, and yet the reality, as I see it.

There is this great battle of Gog mentioned in the Bible. The one in Rev 20 appears to be the same player, but at a different time, after the Millennium, or at the end of it. This player is likely Russia, in my view.

So yes, there is this great battle coming to invade Israel. I'm just not sure if it will be with adventurous Russia that we now see, with China's support, or in an alliance with Europe in the Antichristian alliance?

There is no World war 3. the 4 attacks prophesied are all won by the Lord without a shot being fired:
1/ Against Israel by an Islamic confederation; Psalms 83, Micah 4:11-12
2/ The Gog/Magog attack against the Christion peoples in all of the holy Land. Ezekiel 38 to 39
3/ The attack against Jesus by the worlds armies at Armageddon. Revelation 19:17-21

With all due respect, Keraz, "Gog" is in fact in biblical prophecy. What is happening today in the Ukraine is very much resembling the prophecy of "Gog!" Apart from that, I have a personal interest if only because I recently discovered some of my relatives originated from there. But that, of course, has nothing to do with Bible Prophecy!

I said that Gog is a Bible prophecy. As such, it is open to interpretation. To say such discussion does not belong in a general discussion of Bible Prophecy is wrong-headed, because that assumes that only *your interpretation* counts. I don't doubt that there's corruption, as well as confusion, in the Ukraine. I just don't believe a country can survive internal sedition--no country tolerates that. I like Tucker Carlson, and he is strongly recommending the US stay far away from foreign military entanglements. I'm open to that way of thinking, except I also am concerned with what many experts are saying, that allowing Russia to run roughshod over independent countries opens the door for China to do that in Taiwan, Iran to do that in neighboring countries, N. Korea to threaten its neighbors with nukes, etc. etc.

Without the threat of military retaliation, autocratic governments seem to have little concern about the "ethics" of taking over neighboring countries. They always find a rationale to do so that satisfies their own conscience. But with the threat of economic or military devastation, adventuristic policies seem much less desirable for these dictators.

Both of my grandparents on one side of my family were Finns from Finland. I have cousins and relatives over there. It upsets me to think Russia can be casually looked on as "reasonably interested in taking these countries." I agree that Ukraine is traditionally a part of Russia, and there may be some legitimate political links to Russia from within the Ukraine. However, being an independent country as it presently stands, an incursion by Russia is illegitimate and should not be looked on casually as "normal."

If Russia begins to be "adventurous" I should think its sphere of influence will reach as far as any empire would want to reach. Israelis not beyond its reach, since it has a puppet state in Syria.

All every true, except that neither NATO nor the USA had a solid plan to stop Russian aggression from the time that the Soviet Union fell. And neither did Eastern and Northeastern Europe.

Had these Europeans been smarter, they would have said "No" to NATO and formed their own military alliance as a barricade against Russian aggression. The following countries could have made their own "Russian Resistance Pact". Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. And if they had been even smarter, they would have asked Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland to join them. At the same time they could have grabbed Kaliningrad from Russia (to show that both can play that game).

Can you imagine how this would have deterred "Tsar Putin" from his machinations and ambitions? Putin is an evil guy -- make no mistake. He has robbed Russia blind, and makes these aggressive moves to cover his criminality.

Well, I would've put you in charge to putting forward that idea and implementing it! Not a bad thought at all. I appreciate it.

I think the thing that is driving people to make these crazy decisions are energy and security needs, as well as the fear of invasion by bullies. Forming an alliance against Russia in the sphere of the old Soviet Union could become the next pretext for Russia to invade.

And I don't see Germany clamoring for Russia to beware of NATO resistance? It seems like all that Climate Change rhetoric, and the abandonment of nuclear energy has led to a transformation of Germany's attitude towards Putin?

I believe that the poor Finns copped the wrong end of the pineapple as with Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland's West and East Germany as all should never been let into the clutches of Communist Russia, that was a huge monumental crime. But the handful of people who control the whole world planed it that way.
